There is no defensible universal speed ranking for PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQLite. The fastest choice depends on the workload, data and indexes, transaction and durability settings, concurrency, configuration, hardware, and client or network costs. To compare them usefully, test the work your application actually does under equivalent conditions, inspect each engine’s query plan, and report the conditions alongside the results.

Why one database is not always faster than another

A database engine does not have one speed that applies to every query or application. A read-heavy workload, a batch of writes, and a query that joins several large tables exercise different parts of a system. Even for the same SQL operation, the result can change with the schema, indexes, data size and distribution, transaction boundaries, concurrency, and configuration.

The application also affects what a user experiences. Connection setup, serialization, and transmitting results to a client can add time that is not part of the database’s query execution. A database-only timing and an end-to-end application timing therefore answer different questions.

What the execution plan can tell you

Before treating elapsed time as an engine verdict, check how the engine plans to perform the query. Planners choose among available execution strategies based on the query and information about the data. Indexes and current planner statistics can influence that choice; an inefficient plan may be a query, schema, index, or statistics problem rather than evidence that the engine is inherently slower.

Engine Plan inspection What to keep in mind
PostgreSQL EXPLAIN shows the selected plan, including scan and join strategies. EXPLAIN ANALYZE executes the statement and reports actual runtime details, including row counts and timing. The PostgreSQL 17 documentation warns that profiling overhead can make EXPLAIN ANALYZE take significantly longer than normal execution. Keep planner statistics current. Planner cost values are arbitrary units, not wall-clock time suitable for comparing costs across engines. EXPLAIN also does not include client result-transmission costs.
MySQL The MySQL 8.4 manual documents EXPLAIN for inspecting the optimizer’s selected plan. The optimizer considers table, column, index, and WHERE-condition details. Learn to recognize inefficient plan operations instead of inferring a cause from elapsed time alone.
SQLite EXPLAIN QUERY PLAN provides a high-level view of the chosen strategy. SQLite’s query-planner documentation describes the planner’s choice among available algorithms and emphasizes the importance of indexes.

A plan is diagnostic evidence, not a cross-engine score. Compare the actual work each engine performs for the same logical query, and do not treat estimated plan costs as directly comparable measurements.

Which conditions make a fair comparison?

Make the test reflect the application you need to choose for, while keeping the comparison as like-for-like as the engines allow. Record the conditions so another reader can understand what the result does—and does not—show.

Anker USB-C Hub, 5-in-1 USB Hub for Laptops, 4K HDMI Multiport Adapter
  • 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
  • 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
  • Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
  • 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Workload: Include the actual read, write, and join mix, with representative query shapes and parameter values.
  • Data and schema: Use representative data size and distribution, equivalent schemas, and the same logical indexes where supported. Note any differences required by an engine.
  • Transactions and durability: Record transaction size and boundaries, isolation settings, and durability or synchronization behavior. Do not compare different correctness or crash-recovery guarantees as if they were equivalent.
  • Concurrency: State the number of concurrent clients and writers. A result under one client does not establish performance under a different level of contention.
  • Environment: Record engine versions, configuration, hardware, cache state, and whether the client is colocated with the database or communicates over a network.
  • Measurements: Repeat trials and report latency distributions—or at least median and tail latency—alongside throughput. State how warm-up and cache conditions were handled.

How to run a useful comparison

  1. Define the decision. Choose representative application operations and decide whether you care most about response time, throughput, or both. Include realistic transaction sizes and concurrency.
  2. Prepare equivalent test data. Use the same logical records, schema, and index definitions where each engine supports them. Verify that the queries produce equivalent results.
  3. Set and document the environment. Record exact versions and configuration, hardware, cache state, transaction and durability settings, isolation level, client placement, and concurrency.
  4. Measure the same work repeatedly. Keep client-side costs either consistently included or consistently excluded, and state which approach you used. Report repeated latency results and throughput rather than a single unexplained timing.
  5. Inspect the plans. Use each engine’s plan-inspection facility. Where actual execution details are available, compare estimated and actual behavior, bearing in mind that plan inspection can add overhead.
  6. Investigate anomalies before ranking engines. Check for missing or unused indexes, stale planner statistics where applicable, different transaction grouping, cache effects, and client or network overhead. Rerun after a material correction and disclose it.

What the SQLite speed comparison does—and does not—show

The SQLite project’s online “Database Speed Comparison” reports tests of SQLite 2.7.6. Its examples vary by operation and test setup; for instance, 1,000 individual inserts and 25,000 inserts grouped in one transaction do not produce the same relative result. The documentation discusses transaction handling and synchronization as important costs. This is a historical demonstration that workload and test conditions can change the apparent winner, not a contemporary head-to-head ranking of current PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQLite releases.

The comparison also presents synchronization and no-synchronization cases separately. Disabling synchronization may improve a timing, but the SQLite project warns that it can risk database damage after a crash or power failure. A benchmark that changes durability behavior is not an apples-to-apples comparison of equivalent guarantees.

How to choose for your application

Choose based on the behavior you need under your expected workload, then validate with a test that resembles production. If the concern is a particular slow query, first inspect its plan and relevant indexes; swapping engines without identifying the cause may not address it. If the concern is simultaneous work, test the expected client and writer concurrency rather than extrapolating from a single-client run.

There are no current cross-engine performance statistics established here that support naming PostgreSQL, MySQL, or SQLite as the overall fastest. A defensible claim needs the engine versions, workload, configuration, durability settings, hardware, and measurement method attached to it.
