For Laravel apps that need Great Britain postcode lookup, coordinates, or administrative geography, joshdovey/postcodes is a typed client for the GB Postcodes API. It can validate postcode inputs, retrieve postcode data, and support proximity and boundary searches. The key distinction is that a postcode’s shape does not prove it exists, and its assigned area is not an exact property boundary.

What does the Laravel postcodes package do?

joshdovey/postcodes connects a Laravel application to the GB Postcodes API. Its repository documents postcode lookup, autocomplete, geography and population fields, distance and radius searches, reverse geocoding, and GeoJSON polygon searches. Laravel News describes typed results, a Laravel validation rule, and a test fake, and distinguishes this package from an earlier Postcodes.io wrapper. These are documented capabilities, not independent performance tests.

The returned geography can include local authority, ward, parliamentary constituency, NHS integrated care board, police force area, and census-related data. The package also documents boundary geometry in responses by default; request only the fields your application needs when geometry is unnecessary, since large spatial responses add data you may not use. See the package repository and Laravel News overview.

How do I install and configure it?

The repository specifies PHP 8.2 or later and Laravel 12 or 13. Install the package with Composer and provide the GB Postcodes API key as an environment variable:

How do I validate a UK postcode in Laravel?

Decide whether the form requires a complete postcode unit or accepts a partial outward/district code before choosing the package’s validation rule. The repository documents ValidPostcode::unit() for a complete postcode unit; its general validation rule can be used where outward or district-level inputs are acceptable.

Validation here has two distinct questions: does the text have a plausible postcode shape, and does the API dataset contain that postcode? The package checks shape locally and then checks existence through the API. Its documented default is fail-open during API unavailability: a shape-valid value can pass when connectivity fails. Strict mode instead makes API failure a validation failure. Choose deliberately; fail-open helps avoid blocking a checkout during an outage, while strict validation is appropriate only when confirmed current lookup data is essential. A regex alone cannot establish that a postcode exists. See the repository’s validation documentation.

How can I look up a postcode and get its local authority?

Use the package facade to resolve a postcode, then read the typed result’s geography fields. The repository documents Postcodes::get() for lookup and getOrFail() when a missing result should raise an exception. A controller can use the former when it needs to return its own not-found response:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
$postcode = Postcodes::get($input);

Normalize user input according to the package’s documented behavior, and handle the case where no result is returned. The repository also documents autocomplete and multi-postcode requests in batches of up to 100 codes per request. Treat batch size and response fields as API constraints, not permission to accept unvalidated user input.

A local authority field is an administrative association in the source data, not proof that a particular house sits within a legal boundary. For a property-level decision or exact address, use address-level data rather than inferring the property from the postcode.

How do I get postcode latitude and longitude in Laravel?

After resolving a postcode, use its documented latitude and longitude properties; Laravel News shows these among the typed-object fields. These coordinates are useful for maps, approximate distance calculations, and finding nearby postcode units. They should not be described as a rooftop coordinate for a particular address: a postcode represents multiple addresses, and a representative point does not identify an individual property.

If the application needs distances, nearest postcodes, a distance matrix, radius results, or reverse geocoding, the repository documents those package capabilities. The appropriate result depends on the underlying postcode data and the requested geometry, so avoid treating a radius search as an address-level search.

How do I find postcodes within a radius or polygon?

Radius and distance searches

The package documents radius search, nearest-postcode lookup, and distance calculations. Use a radius when the question is “which postcode locations are near this point?” Select a distance unit explicitly or use the package’s configured default. A result based on postcode representative points answers a proximity question about those points; it does not guarantee that every address in a selected postcode lies inside the radius.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

GeoJSON polygon search

For an irregular region, the repository documents searching within GeoJSON polygons. Polygon queries are a different spatial operation from radius queries: the result depends on how postcode geometry is represented and tested against the supplied polygon. Check whether the application needs a representative point or an intersecting postcode extent before presenting matches as “inside” an area.

When polygon geometry is not needed for the task, select only required response fields or disable boundary data using the package’s documented options. This keeps responses focused and avoids transferring geometry unnecessarily.

What is the difference between Postcodes.io and the GB Postcodes API?

The Laravel package in this article is a client for the GB Postcodes API. Postcodes.io is a separate hosted postcode service, with its own API and data pipeline; its public repository says the service uses ONSPD, Ordnance Survey Open Names, and the Scottish Postcode Directory. Choose based on coverage, data fields, operational requirements, and licensing rather than assuming the names refer to the same API.

joshdovey/postcodes with GB Postcodes API Laravel integration using typed results, validation, geography, and documented spatial operations. Repository specifies PHP 8.2+ and Laravel 12 or 13; configure an API key. Check current API coverage, quota, and terms with the provider.
Postcodes.io Hosted postcode lookup, autocomplete, reverse geocoding, nearest-postcode, outward-code, and bulk operations. Service and dataset coverage/licensing vary by jurisdiction. An HTTP 200 from autocomplete can still contain no matches; inspect the response list.

Postcodes.io’s autocomplete documentation says matching is case-insensitive and prefix-based, can return an empty list or up to 100 postcode entities, and returns HTTP 200 in either case. Its code is MIT-licensed, but that does not make every underlying postcode dataset unrestricted. Postcodes.io states that GB postcode data may be used under OS OpenData terms; Northern Ireland BT postcode data has separate terms, and commercial use requires a licence from NI Land & Property Services. Check the Postcodes.io documentation and licensing page for the intended jurisdiction and use.

Where can I get GB postcode boundary data?

First decide whether the application needs a point for each postcode or an area geometry. A point dataset supports mapping and proximity calculations; it does not automatically provide postcode extents.

Source Data and delivery Update and coverage stated by source
ONS Postcode Directory (ONSPD) Links current and terminated postcodes to administrative, health, and other geographies using point-in-polygon assignment. ONS’s product page describes UK coverage, one-metre grid references, and quarterly releases in February, May, August, and November. The page says it was last updated 27 January 2016, so verify the current downloadable edition and guide.
ONS National Statistics Postcode Lookup (NSPL) Assigns postcodes to Output Areas, then references those areas to higher geographies using a population-based best-fit method. See the ONS page for its published product description; confirm current release details before relying on a particular edition.
OS Code-Point Open Free CSV or GeoPackage download of current GB postcode units, oriented around postcode locations rather than postcode polygons. OS says it is updated every three months and its product page states coverage of 1.7 million postcodes. The figure is OS’s current product-page claim, not a count for the Laravel package or ONSPD.
OS GB Postcodes Representative location for each postcode unit plus postcode extents; available by download and API in CSV or GeoPackage. OS says this product is updated monthly. It describes postcode unit areas as extended for full national coverage and aligned with built and natural features.

ONSPD and NSPL are not interchangeable. ONS says ONSPD assigns postcode geography using point-in-polygon; if addresses in a postcode straddle a boundary, assignment is based on the area containing the mean grid reference of the postcode’s addresses. NSPL first assigns postcodes to Output Areas using the same initial approach, then uses a population-based best fit for higher geographies. These are statistical and administrative allocation methods, not exact property-boundary guarantees. Read the ONS postcode products description.

Ordnance Survey describes Code-Point Open as a free dataset of current Great Britain postcode units, whereas OS GB Postcodes supplies representative locations and postcode extents. If the analysis depends on the outline of a postcode area, do not substitute a point-only file without checking that it meets the requirement. Review the Code-Point Open product and OS GB Postcodes product pages for current download and licensing terms.

How should I handle caching, retries, and API failures?

The package documentation specifies one-day caching by default and retries for transient timeouts, connection failures, burst rate limits, and server errors. It says successful responses are cached, while exhausted plan quota is not retried. Configuration includes timeout, retry behavior, distance unit, detail level, fields, and strict validation. Set these to match the consequences of stale data and the API’s current limits; do not assume a retry can repair quota exhaustion.

  • Use a cache lifetime that reflects how quickly the application needs to see postcode changes.
  • Handle API outages separately from “postcode not found,” so users and logs do not confuse a service failure with invalid input.
  • Decide whether validation should fail open or use strict mode, especially for workflows where an unconfirmed postcode would create a downstream risk.
  • Use the package fake documented by Laravel News to isolate application tests from live HTTP responses.

Which approach should I choose?

  • Choose the Laravel package and GB Postcodes API when hosted lookup and the package’s Laravel validation, typed geography, or spatial features fit the application.
  • Choose Postcodes.io when its hosted endpoints and dataset coverage suit the feature, after checking response semantics and geographic licensing.
  • Choose a downloadable dataset when offline access, local processing, or control over refresh cadence matters. Select point data for postcode locations and polygon-capable data when extents are required.
  • Choose address-level data when the user needs a specific property, rooftop coordinate, or UPRN. Postcodes.io’s homepage presents Ideal Postcodes as an option for broader UK and territories coverage and property-level detail; treat that as the provider’s comparison statement, and verify the service’s coverage and terms directly.
