A point-of-sale system does not require one universal hardware bundle. A mobile seller may need only a supported phone or tablet and a way to accept payments; a staffed retail counter may add a receipt printer, barcode scanner, and cash drawer. Choose equipment around the jobs your checkout must do, then verify each exact model and connection against your POS provider’s current compatibility list.
Start with the checkout workflow, not a hardware bundle
POS hardware is the physical equipment used to run checkout and related tasks. The POS device runs the software; payment readers, printers, scanners, drawers, and other peripherals add functions the business actually needs. Shopify’s retail hardware guide illustrates how setups vary: a pop-up can be lightweight, while a fixed or multi-location operation may need more components.
- Mobile selling: A supported smartphone or tablet and payment capability may be sufficient. Shopify describes smartphone Tap to Pay as one possible mobile setup, subject to country and device eligibility.
- Retail counter: A tablet or terminal can be paired with a reader; add a printer, scanner, or cash drawer only for the workflows you use.
- Restaurant service: Front-of-house ordering, payment, and kitchen routing may require different devices and peripherals than retail checkout.
What each piece of POS hardware does
POS device or terminal
This runs the POS interface. Depending on the software and product, it can be a phone, tablet, dedicated terminal, handheld, or touchscreen device. Check the provider’s supported operating systems and device requirements before choosing the hardware.
Payment reader or terminal
A reader accepts the payment methods supported by both the device and the payment provider. Confirm the exact reader model, payment types, and availability in your country; provider features and payment methods can vary by region.

Receipt printer
A receipt printer produces paper customer receipts. Model and connection compatibility matter: a printer supported by one platform may not work with another, or with every connection method offered by that platform.
Barcode scanner
A scanner reads product barcodes so the POS can retrieve the corresponding item. It can be useful when staff regularly look up barcoded inventory at checkout rather than navigating the item library.

Cash drawer
A cash drawer supports cash transactions. Its connection and opening mechanism depend on the setup. For example, Shopify’s POS Hub documentation says compatible drawers connect through a compatible receipt printer, while Square documents drawers that connect through compatible printers and may open automatically.
Kitchen equipment and other peripherals
Restaurants may route orders to kitchen printers or display them on a kitchen display system. Depending on the workflow, other equipment can include handheld order terminals, scales, kiosks, pole displays, or customer-facing displays. A stand may also suit a fixed tablet counter. These are additions for specific workflows, not default requirements.

Practical equipment by business setup

These are planning patterns, not mandatory bundles. Shopify’s retail recommendations similarly make equipment dependent on business needs. Toast describes Android tablets serving as order terminals, kiosks, handheld devices, kitchen displays, or payment terminals, with peripherals selected for the restaurant’s workflow.
Check compatibility before buying
- Choose the POS platform first. Confirm that your intended phone, tablet, or terminal meets the vendor’s device and operating-system requirements.
- Check the exact peripheral model. Use the provider’s current compatibility list, not just a product category or a seller’s general claim that a device is “POS compatible.” Shopify’s POS Hub compatibility documentation lists specific models, including Zebra DS2208 and DS2278 scanners, Star Micronics and Epson printers, and particular cash drawers. These are examples for that documented Shopify setup, not a guarantee of compatibility with other POS platforms.
- Confirm the connection method. Establish whether each item uses USB through a supported hub, Bluetooth, or a network connection. Shopify says its POS Hub offers USB connectivity as an alternative to Bluetooth. Its guide also explains that LAN-capable printers and other Ethernet peripherals connect to the router, not to the Hub’s Ethernet port as peripherals.
- Verify the cash-drawer path. Find out whether the drawer connects to the POS device, a hub, or a compatible receipt printer, and confirm the required cable and opening method. Do not assume drawers share a connection standard.
- Check payment and regional availability. Confirm that the reader supports the payment methods you intend to accept and is available for your country and device.
Set up the network and peripherals in the right order
Network problems can disrupt payment processing, device connectivity, and data syncing. Shopify Help Center’s instruction for Shopify POS is direct: “Before you connect any hardware, set up your network for Shopify POS.” Follow the selected provider’s setup flow rather than assuming equipment will work as soon as it is plugged in.

- Prepare and test the store network before connecting equipment.
- Connect each peripheral using its documented method and the compatible ports or network connection.
- Open the POS device’s setup flow and confirm that each peripheral is detected.
- Configure payment acceptance and run the provider’s recommended payment test before opening. Toast’s setup overview includes network checks, peripheral detection, payment configuration, and a payment test.
- If a spare payment reader is important for checkout continuity, consider pairing it before launch. Shopify recommends considering a spare reader and pairing it in advance.
Examples of hardware named in Shopify POS Hub documentation
These models illustrate why checking the exact platform and setup matters; their inclusion is not a cross-platform compatibility claim or a statement about current stock or price.
- Receipt printers: Star Micronics mC-Print3 and Epson TM-m30III are listed as compatible with Shopify POS Hub. Confirm the exact connection model and region.
- Barcode scanners: Zebra DS2208 USB and Zebra DS2278 2D are listed for Shopify POS Hub. Confirm the platform and connection requirements for your configuration.
- Cash drawer: Star Micronics SMD2 appears in Shopify’s POS Hub compatibility table; Shopify says a Hub-connected drawer plugs into a compatible receipt printer.
What to confirm before placing an order
- The POS software and exact device or peripheral model are supported together.
- The device meets the platform’s operating-system and hardware requirements.
- The payment reader supports your payment methods and is available in your region.
- Every component has a confirmed connection path, including any required hub, printer, or router.
- Your network is prepared, and the provider’s setup flow can detect the equipment.
- Each item solves a real need: taking payment, printing a receipt or kitchen ticket, scanning products, handling cash, or supporting a particular service arrangement.
There is no dependable cross-vendor total-cost or performance comparison established here. Gather current local prices and verify what the POS software bundle includes separately before comparing the cost of complete setups.
