You generally cannot move a carrier phone number onto a tablet by installing an app. Porting transfers a number from one provider to another, and a calling app on an iPad or other tablet is a different kind of service. The right fix depends on what you want the tablet to do: place calls over the internet, ring when your existing number is dialed, or move the number to a new provider entirely.
Why a direct port fails
Porting changes which provider hosts a phone number. Installing an app, or linking one number to another service, does not change that. Your carrier still hosts the existing line, and a tablet has no phone number of its own unless a service assigns one.
Receiving providers also set their own eligibility rules. Google states that not all mobile numbers can be ported into a personal Google Voice account, and its porting process covers specified account types and US mobile numbers (Google Voice Help, “Port your Google Voice number”). Those rules belong to Google Voice. They do not mean that every tablet or every calling app rejects ported numbers, so check the rules of the specific service you plan to use.
When readers ask why they cannot port a number to a tablet, they usually mean one of four different outcomes:

- A SCREEN EVERYONE CAN ENJOY: A bright, engaging 11" screen² with a refresh rate up to 90Hz delivers natural, fluid motion, enhancing video conferencing into a smooth and productive experience.
- Moving a carrier number to a new provider so the number no longer depends on the current phone plan.
- Making calls from the tablet and having them show the existing number as caller ID.
- Receiving calls placed to the existing number on the tablet.
- Making and receiving calls on the tablet over an internet connection.
Each of these needs a different service feature, which is why a single port request rarely solves all four.
Cellular data is not the same as a carrier voice line
A cellular tablet can use mobile data, but that does not mean it can place ordinary carrier voice calls. Whether voice calling, number sharing, and call forwarding work depends on the exact tablet model, the plan, and the carrier. Those details are not established for every setup, so ask the manufacturer and your carrier before assuming native calling will work.
Choose the outcome you actually need
| Goal | Typical approach | Does it keep your existing carrier number? | What to verify first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calls and texts from the tablet over the internet | App number, such as Google Voice on iPhone and iPad | No. The app provides a new number. | Service availability in your country and the account type you have |
| Ring the tablet when people call your existing number | Link the mobile number to a service that supports linked calling | Yes. The line stays with its carrier. | Whether your tablet counts as a linked phone in that service’s settings |
| Move the number to a new provider | Port the number to the receiving service | The number moves. Your current provider cancels phone service once the port completes. | Number eligibility, port-in fee, account type, and when to keep your old plan active |
| Ordinary carrier calls on a cellular tablet | Carrier’s own service on the tablet | Not stated for this setup | Support for voice, number sharing, and forwarding on your exact model and plan, confirmed with the manufacturer and carrier |
Option 1: Use an app number for internet calls
Google Voice provides a number for calls, texts, and voicemail, and it can be used from a browser or a mobile device (Google Voice Help, “Set up Google Voice — iPhone & iPad”). On iPhone and iPad, Google’s help describes making calls over Wi-Fi or mobile data (Google Voice Help, “Make Google Voice calls over the internet — iPhone & iPad”). Availability and account requirements apply, so confirm that the service is offered where you live before you set it up. This route gives you a new number. It does not carry over the carrier number you already have.

Option 2: Link your existing number
Linking is not the same as porting. Google Voice explains that linking a mobile number supports carrier calling and that calls to a Google Voice number can ring linked phones (Google Voice Help, “Make Google Voice calls over the internet — iPhone & iPad”). The existing line remains with its carrier. The help pages describe linked phones in general terms, so check the linking and ringing behavior in your account and app settings to see whether a tablet is treated as a linked device.
Option 3: Call forwarding
A third-party article presents call forwarding as a workaround, but carrier menus and charges vary, and that article is not an authoritative source for any carrier’s policy. Google’s official pages describe forwarding calls from a Google Voice number to linked phones. They do not establish forwarding from any carrier line to any app number. Confirm the steps with your carrier before changing settings, and ask whether forwarding carries a charge.
Option 4: Port the number, step by step
Port only after you have confirmed that the receiving provider accepts your number and that you understand what the move ends. The steps below apply to Google Voice personal accounts, as described on Google’s porting page:

- The device is Fully Unlocked with T-Mobile Only. Most Other US carriers will not allow calling feature to work on this device. Most other US carriers may not recognize International IMEI's as compatible.
- International Model without Domestic Warranty. Please note, this device does not support E-SIM. Please contact the seller for more information about carrier compatibility.
- Confirm eligibility. Check that your number is a US mobile number that qualifies for a personal account. Not all mobile numbers can be ported.
- Note the fee. Google charges a $20 port-in fee for this account type.
- Keep your current phone plan active. Do not cancel it until the port has completed.
- Plan for the old line to end. Google states that your current provider cancels phone service after the port completes, so the number will no longer work on that plan.
Google does not give a universal porting timeline in the material cited here, and other services publish their own rules, so read the receiving provider’s current terms before you start.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow calls fall back, and emergency calling
Google Voice can use Wi-Fi or mobile data. If Wi-Fi calling is unavailable, the call may go through your mobile carrier, and carrier charges may apply. For an internet-only call, start it inside the Voice app and check its call settings. Do not assume the tablet’s built-in Phone app uses the same route.
A calling app is not an emergency-service substitute. Google’s guidance says emergency calling is available in Google Voice only for Google Workspace accounts managed by a work or school. When a call goes through the mobile carrier, the carrier handles emergency calls.

Data use for internet calls
Google’s internet-calling help page estimates about 0.2 MB per minute for Google Voice calls. This is Google’s own estimate, and the page does not state a publication date. Google notes that actual usage depends on network quality and speed, so treat the figure as a rough guide rather than a fixed rate.
Using a Bluetooth headset
A Bluetooth headset can improve call audio on a compatible tablet. Google lists Bluetooth among the supported audio devices for Google Voice calls on iPhone and iPad, but warns that device buttons may not always answer or end calls. A headset does not transfer a number or add carrier service.
