Choose a Python web framework by the application you are building and how much structure you want—not by a universal ranking. Django is a candidate when you want a broad web-application framework; Flask when you want a small base and to select components; FastAPI when the central job is building an API; and Pyramid when you want a general web framework with documented unit, integration, and functional testing. Confirm current features, supported Python versions, and testing APIs in each project’s documentation before committing.

How to choose a Python framework

Start with the shape of the software, then consider what the framework supplies versus what your team must choose and integrate. “Full-stack” and “microframework” are shorthand for scope, not quality scores: broad built-in functionality may reduce assembly work, while a smaller base can leave more architectural choices to you.

  • Broader web application: consider Django if you prefer a framework intended to cover more of an application’s needs.
  • Small, composable application: consider Flask if you want a minimal starting point and are comfortable choosing components. Verify its current capabilities and testing guidance in the official Flask documentation; details here are intentionally limited because current official specifics are not established.
  • API-centered service: consider FastAPI if Python type hints, API schemas, and API documentation are central to the project.
  • General web application with explicit testing guidance: consider Pyramid, whose stable documentation covers application development, deployment, and several testing layers.

Before choosing, check whether the project needs server-rendered pages, an API, or both; whether synchronous or asynchronous operation matters; how data validation and type hints fit the codebase; how the application will be deployed; and which framework your team can maintain confidently. The available documentation does not establish a complete, current feature matrix across all four frameworks, so treat these as a shortlist rather than a measured ranking.

What each framework is suited to

Django: a broader web-application option

Django is a reasonable candidate when the goal is a substantial web application and the team values a framework with a broader scope. The specific built-in features and supported versions you need should be confirmed in Django’s current documentation rather than inferred from the label “full-stack.” Its release policy is also in transition: the Django Software Foundation’s August 10, 2026 announcement says annual feature releases begin in January 2028, with three years of support for each feature release. The announcement says existing commitments remain unchanged before 2028, including the Django 5.2 LTS and 6.2 LTS commitments. Django’s release-policy announcement

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Flask: a small base when you want to choose components

Flask may suit a project where a compact starting point and explicit component choices fit the team’s design. Do not use old release listings as current version guidance: the Python wiki directory includes Flask, but its release information is dated and community-maintained. Check Flask’s own current documentation for supported versions, application patterns, and testing instructions before relying on any particular feature or test client.

FastAPI: an API-focused choice

FastAPI’s official documentation describes it as a framework for building APIs with standard Python type hints, based on OpenAPI and JSON Schema. It identifies Starlette for web-related parts and Pydantic for data-related parts. This makes it a natural candidate when typed API inputs and outputs and schema-based API workflows are important. FastAPI’s published performance and productivity figures are project claims, not independent benchmarks or guarantees for a specific application. FastAPI documentation

Pyramid: a general web framework with testing and deployment material

Pyramid’s stable documentation presents it as a Python web framework and includes tutorials, deployment material, and separate chapters for unit, integration, and functional testing. That breadth is useful when evaluating its learning resources and test-layer guidance; it does not establish that Pyramid is better or worse at testing than the other choices. Compare the decision points before you build

Decision point How to use it
Application shape Choose based on whether you are building a broader web application, a composable small application, or primarily an API. FastAPI is explicitly API-focused; verify the fit of the others against current project documentation.
Built-in scope Decide whether you want a wider framework scope or prefer to select and integrate more components yourself. Do not treat scope labels as a quality ranking.
Sync and async needs Write down the concurrency requirements and confirm the framework’s current supported patterns and deployment implications in its official docs.
Types and validation FastAPI explicitly uses standard Python type hints and is based on OpenAPI and JSON Schema. For the other choices, check current docs and assess how their approach fits your codebase.
Testing workflow Plan tests for isolated logic, framework or database boundaries, and user-visible behavior. Verify each framework’s current test-client and integration-test APIs before adopting a recipe.
Deployment and team familiarity Check official deployment guidance and supported runtime versions, then weigh operational fit and the experience of the people who will own the application.

Plan tests by layer, not by framework reputation

A useful testing plan separates what is being verified. Pyramid’s documentation explicitly covers unit, integration, and functional testing, offering a concrete reference for these layers. The same distinctions are useful when evaluating any framework, but do not assume a particular client or test recipe is shared across frameworks.

  • Unit tests: exercise isolated application logic without crossing external boundaries.
  • Integration tests: check interactions across boundaries such as framework wiring or database access.
  • Functional or end-to-end tests: check behavior visible to a user or API consumer across a meaningful workflow.

Use the chosen framework’s current official testing documentation to select its test client, fixtures, and setup. For a general Python test runner, pytest’s changelog is version-sensitive: it lists pytest 9.1.1 dated June 19, 2026 and includes current deprecations. Pin and verify the version used by the project instead of copying unversioned setup steps. pytest changelog

Check release and compatibility details before adopting

Framework releases, support windows, Python compatibility, and testing interfaces change. Check the project’s official release and installation documentation for the version you intend to deploy, then make that version explicit in your project’s dependency and CI setup.

Make a practical shortlist

  1. Write down the application’s primary shape: broad web application, small composable service, or API.
  2. List framework responsibilities you want supplied and components you prefer to choose explicitly.
  3. Check current official documentation for supported Python versions, sync or async patterns, deployment, and testing APIs.
  4. Build a small representative slice, then test an isolated function, a framework or persistence boundary, and one user-visible workflow.
  5. Choose the option your team can operate and maintain, not the one with the most attractive unverified performance claim.
