Spring Boot is the leading choice in the dated cloud-native Java survey evidence reviewed here, but popularity depends on who was surveyed and what they were asked. Jakarta EE and MicroProfile are also widely used in that evidence, yet they are standards-based ecosystem technologies that can complement frameworks rather than direct substitutes. Choose based on the category you need, your deployment, compatibility, ecosystem, team skills, and measured operational requirements—not a single popularity figure.

What counts as a popular Java framework?

There is no single, universal ranking of Java frameworks in the available evidence. The strongest dated figures here come from Eclipse Foundation surveys focused on enterprise and cloud-native Java. They describe the respondents and the questions in those surveys; they are not a census of all Java developers or a current measure of market share.

In the Eclipse Foundation’s 2024 survey, which had 1,409 participants and ran from March 19 through May 31, Spring/Spring Boot was named by 63% of respondents as a top technology for building cloud-native applications, down from 66% in 2023. Jakarta EE was at 60%, up from 53%, and MicroProfile at 32%, up from 26%. The survey was promoted through social channels, Eclipse Foundation and Jakarta EE websites, newsletters, blogs, and community partners, so its results should not be read as a random sample of every Java developer. Eclipse Foundation’s 2024 Cloud Native Java Survey results report these figures.

How the leading options differ

Spring Boot: a ready application setup in the Spring ecosystem

Spring Boot is designed for stand-alone, production-grade Spring applications. Its official project description highlights embedded servers and opinionated configuration, making it a natural starting point when you want a ready application structure and Spring’s broader ecosystem. That positioning does not make it the best fit for every application. Spring Boot’s official project page describes its goals and capabilities.

Quarkus: an option to assess for Kubernetes and cloud-native deployments

Quarkus’s official positioning emphasizes Kubernetes and cloud-native Java. Consider it when those deployment contexts matter to your design, then evaluate it against your own application and operational requirements. The material cited here does not establish a general startup, memory, or throughput advantage; those comparisons need benchmarks matched to your application. Quarkus’s official site provides project information.

Micronaut: another JVM framework to evaluate

Micronaut is a JVM framework with official documentation and ecosystem resources. It is a relevant candidate for a framework shortlist, but the survey evidence summarized here does not provide a comparable Micronaut adoption percentage. Micronaut’s official site links to its project information and documentation.

Jakarta EE and MicroProfile are not simply rival frameworks

Jakarta EE and MicroProfile are specification-based ecosystem technologies. They can be used with implementations and frameworks, and a project may rely on specifications without choosing between them and Spring Boot as if they were interchangeable products.

The Eclipse Foundation’s 2024 survey explicitly cautions that Jakarta EE, Spring/Spring Boot, and MicroProfile are not necessarily competing technologies: Spring/Spring Boot and MicroProfile rely on some Jakarta EE specifications. That distinction matters when assessing APIs, implementations, and framework choices together. The survey report discusses this relationship.

Jakarta EE APIs reported in a separate survey

In a separate Cloud Native Java Survey conducted by the Eclipse Foundation and Jakarta EE Working Group from July 11 through August 23, 2024, respondents reported use of Jakarta REST at 70%, CDI at 68%, and Persistence/JPA at 66%. These are API usage figures from that separate survey, not framework rankings. The 2024 Cloud Native Java Survey summary gives the figures.

Keep frameworks, runtimes, and standards in their proper categories

A second survey illustrates why category labels matter. Among over 170 respondents in the separate 2024 Cloud Native Java Survey, Spring Boot was reported at 38%, Tomcat at 33%, Quarkus at 32%, and WildFly at 31% in a question covering runtimes. Tomcat and WildFly should therefore be understood as runtimes or implementations in this comparison, not as direct equivalents to every application framework. These numbers cannot be combined with or directly compared against the 1,409-person survey’s figures: the participant counts and question scopes differ. The survey summary describes the separate results.

How to choose a Java framework or platform

Start by identifying what you are actually choosing. A framework shapes application development; a runtime executes the application; a standards platform defines APIs and behavior that implementations can provide. Your design may involve more than one category.

  • Deployment and architecture: Match the project’s deployment environment and architecture to the official positioning of the candidates, rather than assuming one framework suits every context.
  • Compatibility and migration: Check your existing Java and Jakarta APIs, dependencies, and integration points. Include migration work in the decision, not just the appeal of a new framework.
  • Integrations and ecosystem: Verify that required libraries, services, and platform APIs fit the approach you plan to use.
  • Team familiarity and support: Weigh what the team can maintain and what documentation and support resources are available.
  • Operational requirements: If startup time, memory, or throughput matters, benchmark representative workloads under comparable conditions. Survey popularity does not answer those performance questions.

For a Spring Boot versus Quarkus decision, first compare their fit for your application and deployment context; then validate any operational differences with matched tests. The survey figures alone do not decide that choice. If your design depends on Jakarta EE APIs or MicroProfile, assess those alongside the framework rather than treating them as mutually exclusive alternatives.

ScreenshotNeo: an alternative for capturing Java documentation and web pages

If your Java work includes capturing website documentation, bug reports, or reference pages, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is separate from Java frameworks and does not affect which framework you choose. Its one-request API returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents.

For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for setup and options. It removes known cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
