Pokémon games do not share one universal save or transfer system. A save file on a console or phone, Pokémon stored in Pokémon HOME, and a game’s online features are separate things—with rules that depend on the title and transfer route. Before moving a save or valuable Pokémon, check the current official guidance for the specific games and devices involved.
How saves, Pokémon HOME, and online features differ
A game save belongs to that game on a console or device. Pokémon HOME is a separate service with its own boxes, while online features such as trading or battling are governed by the requirements of the particular game or service. Moving a save does not automatically move a Pokémon into HOME, and using HOME does not make every Pokémon compatible with every game.
Pokémon Support’s guidance, updated January 30, 2026, confirms that HOME can be used on Nintendo Switch 2. However, linking HOME to a game such as Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet requires that game’s save to be present on the console where HOME is launched.
Moving a Switch save to Switch 2
If HOME cannot connect to a game after a console move, first check whether that game’s save is on the new console. Pokémon Support recommends the system-transfer feature when moving to Switch 2 with the same Nintendo Account; it can move all data, including game saves. The transfer method matters:

For the precise steps and the right option for your users and saves, follow Nintendo’s current system-transfer instructions before starting. The HOME guidance establishes the save-location requirement, but it does not replace those procedural instructions.
Does Pokémon HOME require Nintendo Switch Online?
No. Pokémon Support says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to use the Nintendo Switch version of Pokémon HOME. This answer applies to HOME only; it does not establish membership requirements for online features in individual Pokémon games. HOME’s Switch and mobile versions also differ, and available features can depend on the HOME plan. Check the current Pokémon HOME Premium Plan information for those details.

What happens to a Pokémon’s information and moves in HOME?
Displayed details can depend on the connected game
HOME may show different information depending on the game to which it is connected. If a Pokémon is not available in that title, some of its detailed information may not appear. Pokémon Support states: “Pokémon HOME only changes the displayed information and does not overwrite Pokémon data.” A changed or incomplete display is not, by itself, evidence that HOME has corrupted or permanently overwritten the Pokémon.
Move sets are handled separately for each game
If a Pokémon enters a game where it cannot use its current moves, the target game replaces that active move set with moves allowed there. HOME retains move sets per linked game; when the Pokémon returns to a game it has visited before, its move set for that game is restored.

Species availability and move rules vary by title. The guidance summarized here does not establish a complete current list of every compatible species or deposit and withdrawal exception. Check the official compatibility information for both the origin and target games before moving a Pokémon you particularly want to use.
Using the same HOME boxes on Switch and mobile
To access the same HOME boxes in the Switch and mobile versions, link both versions to the same Nintendo Account. Pokémon Support warns that starting the mobile version without linking the account used—or intended for—Switch HOME prevents the two versions from accessing the same boxes. If you continue with an unlinked guest account and lose access to it, that account cannot be recovered.

Two games with different transfer rules
Pokémon Quest saves do not cross between Switch and mobile
The Nintendo Switch and smartphone versions of Pokémon Quest use incompatible saves; Pokémon Support says, “There is no cross-save functionality.” To move a Quest save between devices, the game instead uses a Backup ID and Backup Key. Its transfer instructions warn that the move uses the save from the last backup, overwrites save data already on the destination, prevents continuing with that same save on the old device, and requires a one-day wait before another transfer. Back up and check the destination carefully before proceeding.
Pokémon GO transfers into HOME are one-way
A Pokémon sent from Pokémon GO to HOME cannot be returned to GO. Pokémon Support says this transfer does not require Nintendo Switch Online or HOME Premium, although some special Pokémon cannot be transferred. For certain transfers from GO into Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield, the Pokémon must also be registered in that game’s Pokédex or have been obtained there previously. Check the current GO transfer instructions for the Pokémon and destination game involved.
