The main difference is the Pokémon you can catch: Ruby has Groudon and the Seedot line, while Sapphire has Kyogre and the Lotad line. Each game also has its own smaller exclusives. For most players, the choice comes down to which Pokémon they want and whether they can trade with someone who has the other version.
Ruby and Sapphire version exclusives
The following list reflects Pokémon that are exclusive in ordinary play, as summarized by the specialist reference Bulbapedia’s Ruby and Sapphire version reference. The list groups related evolutions together; it is not a count of individual Pokédex entries.

Groudon or Kyogre
The most prominent Legendary distinction is Ruby’s Groudon versus Sapphire’s Kyogre. If one of these is the Pokémon you most want to encounter in your own playthrough, that is a straightforward reason to choose its associated version.
Latios and Latias are a qualified exception
Latios is associated with Ruby and Latias with Sapphire, but the opposite roaming Eon Pokémon can be encountered on Southern Island using the Eon Ticket. That means their association is not an absolute barrier to obtaining the other one, though access to the ticket is a condition. Swarm exception for Seedot and Nuzleaf
The same reference notes that Seedot and Nuzleaf can appear through a special swarm interaction with Pokémon Emerald while the swarm is active. Treat them as Ruby exclusives for ordinary Ruby-versus-Sapphire play, but not as impossible to obtain outside Ruby in every circumstance.
What is the same in both games?
Ruby and Sapphire are paired Game Boy Advance role-playing games set in Hoenn. Both introduce the region and share the major systems highlighted in The Pokémon Company International’s official overview: double battles, Pokémon Abilities and Natures, and Contests using Poké Blocks made from cultivated Berries. The official overview also notes connectivity with Pokémon Box on GameCube.

The exclusive Pokémon and associated Legendary are the clearest practical differences for a player choosing between the two. This comparison does not establish a comprehensive inventory of every map, sprite, item, or script variation, so those details should not be assumed to differ without a specific source.
Do you need to trade to complete the collection?
Yes. Ruby and Sapphire each have Pokémon unavailable in ordinary play in the other version, so trading is the direct route to collecting the other game’s exclusives and completing a combined collection. The availability reference classifies each version as having 186 Pokémon available without trading, alongside eight version exclusives and six trade evolutions; those categories use a different counting convention from the grouped evolutionary lines in the table. The games cannot communicate with earlier Game Boy or Game Boy Color games. The specialist version reference describes Game Boy Advance-era link communication and GameCube-related options, including Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon Box. The right connection path depends on your exact hardware, game version, and region, so check compatibility for that setup rather than assuming a single cable or transfer method works for everyone.
Which version should you choose?
- Choose Ruby if you prefer Groudon, Seedot’s evolutionary line, Mawile, Zangoose, or Solrock, or if Ruby is the version you can trade with most easily.
- Choose Sapphire if Kyogre, Lotad’s evolutionary line, Sableye, Seviper, or Lunatone are more appealing, or if Sapphire is the easier trading match for you.
- Plan to trade if your goal is a broad collection or Pokédex completion. Consider which version you can pair with a trading partner or compatible hardware and software before deciding whether to get one game or both.
There is no evidence-based overall winner between the two: the better fit depends on your preferred exclusives and access to trading.

How large is the Generation III Pokédex?
Bulbapedia’s Ruby and Sapphire reference gives Generation III’s figures as 135 new Pokémon and 386 total Pokémon. These are historical Generation III counts, not a comparison of current Pokémon rosters; the cited page does not state a publication year for those figures.
