A point-and-shoot camera is designed to make taking a picture simple: frame the subject, press the shutter, and let the camera handle much of the focusing and exposure. The term is often used for compact cameras, but it can also describe an automatic shooting mode on a camera with more advanced controls.
What does point-and-shoot mean?
“Point-and-shoot” describes a straightforward way to take photographs. The camera automatically manages key settings—especially focus and exposure—so the photographer can concentrate on framing the scene. Canon describes compact cameras, often called point-and-shoot cameras, as small, portable digital cameras designed for ease and convenience, typically with automatic settings and a built-in lens (Canon).
How do you take a picture with one?
- Turn on the camera and choose a mode. Automatic or scene-aware modes let the camera make more of the shooting decisions.
- Frame the subject. Look at the screen or viewfinder, if the model has one.
- Adjust the zoom if available. A built-in lens may offer zoom, but its range varies by camera.
- Half-press the shutter button to focus. The camera can lock focus before the picture is taken.
- Press the shutter fully. The camera captures the image using the settings selected automatically or by the photographer.
What does the camera automate?
In automatic operation, the camera chooses settings that a photographer might otherwise set manually. These can include focus and exposure—the combination of shutter speed and aperture that affects how light or dark an image appears. Fujifilm’s X30 manual calls AUTO a “simple ‘point-and-shoot’ mode recommended for first-time users of digital cameras” and explains that shutter speed and aperture are adjusted automatically in AUTO and Advanced SR AUTO. The X30 also offers other modes in which the photographer can choose exposure settings (Fujifilm X30 manual).
Is a point-and-shoot the same as a compact camera?
The terms overlap, but they emphasize different things. “Point-and-shoot” usually highlights simple, largely automatic operation. “Compact camera” usually describes a small, self-contained camera with a built-in lens. A built-in or fixed lens is not interchangeable with another lens; it may still zoom between different focal lengths.

Neither label guarantees a particular set of controls. Some compact cameras provide manual or priority modes alongside automatic shooting. The terminology can also describe a mode rather than a camera category: Nikon’s D7100 manual uses “point-and-shoot” for AUTO and flash-off modes, where most settings respond automatically to shooting conditions (Nikon D7100 manual).
What features vary by model?
“Point-and-shoot” does not specify a universal sensor size, zoom range, viewfinder, flash, or image quality. Those are features to check on the individual camera. For a particular model, look at whether its automatic modes suit your needs, how much zoom its lens offers, and whether it includes the controls or viewfinder you want.
