The best podcast topic is one you care about enough to revisit, framed around a listener you understand and a point of view that gives the show its own shape. You do not need a completely original subject or a full season planned before launch. You do need a premise that can produce your first several episodes comfortably—and a repeatable way to find the next ones.
Start with your reason for making the show
Before choosing a niche, write down why you want to make a podcast and what experience, knowledge, curiosity, or perspective you bring to it. Spotify for Creators’ August 26, 2026 guide recommends evaluating what makes your perspective distinctive. Casey Adams, host of The Casey Adams Show, puts it this way: “Take a moment to evaluate what makes your perspective unique and write it down on a piece of paper.” Read the Spotify for Creators guide.
Your point of view does not have to come from formal expertise. It might be a particular life experience, a knack for explaining a complicated subject, access to interesting guests, or a willingness to explore a question from a perspective listeners rarely hear. The point is to know what you can consistently contribute.
Choose a topic, then define its listener
A topic names the broad subject; a niche or angle explains who the show is for and what that listener gets from it. “Cooking” is a topic. A show about practical meals for people cooking in a small shared kitchen gives a prospective listener a clearer reason to tune in.

Write two short statements before you settle on a premise:
- Subject: What broad area will the show cover?
- Listener promise: Who is it for, and what will they understand, enjoy, or be able to do after listening?
This definition can help shape your tone, guest choices, episode angles, and where you look for likely listeners. Spotify for Creators’ guidance on discovering and reaching a target audience and its podcast-starting guide both emphasize connecting subject, niche, audience, and format.
Should you pick a broad or niche podcast topic?
Pick the broadest subject that still lets a specific listener recognize the show as meant for them. A broad premise may leave room for many episodes but can be hard to distinguish; a very narrow premise may be clear but difficult to sustain. The useful middle ground is a recognizable subject with a focused audience or angle.

Test the premise against these questions:
- Can a potential listener tell whether the show is for them?
- Can you name several different episode angles without repeating yourself?
- Can the subject stay recognizable while individual episodes explore different questions, guests, or stories?
- Would you still be interested in the subject after the novelty of launching wears off?
Spotify for Creators advises choosing a subject broad enough to support many episodes or multiple seasons, while still making the show’s appeal understandable. You can refine the angle as you learn what listeners respond to; you do not have to settle every boundary before publishing.

How do I know if my podcast idea is original enough?
It does not need to be a subject no one has covered. Familiar subjects can support distinctive shows through a particular host, audience, voice, or approach. Instead of asking whether the topic is unprecedented, ask what makes your version worth choosing: the listener it serves, the questions it asks, the stories it can access, or the way it explains the subject.
Look at existing shows and conversations to understand what listeners already hear and ask. That is not a reason to abandon a subject; it is a way to identify a useful difference. Spotify for Creators’ creator perspectives on finding a podcast topic and responding to audience interest likewise focus on perspective and how creators treat a subject, not total novelty.
Build a repeatable supply of episode ideas
Inspiration is unpredictable. Use more than one dependable source of prompts so a quiet week does not leave you without a plan. Spotify Support’s content ideas for your show include journaling, trivia, teaching, interviews, and reviews. Other useful sources include recurring audience questions, community discussions, comments, polls, trends, and media worth discussing.

Notice recurring questions in online communities, comments, and conversations with likely listeners. Search autocomplete and “People Also Ask” can also surface questions people are exploring. Treat these as prompts to investigate and answer thoughtfully, not proof that a particular episode will attract an audience.

Personal experience and teaching
Keep a journal of observations, mistakes, lessons, and stories connected to the subject. You can turn a useful lesson into a how-to episode, explain a concept you know well, or use a personal experience to open a broader discussion.
Guests and audience contributions
Interviews can bring in people with relevant expertise or stories. Listener questions, polls, and shared experiences can provide another stream of material once an audience is participating. These sources can enrich a show, but consider whether you can keep producing episodes if guests or submissions are unavailable.
Reviews, trivia, trends, and media
Reviews, recaps, games, trivia, and retrospectives can supply structure without depending on listener submissions. A news or current-interest angle can create timely episodes, but it requires you to keep up with new developments. Choose sources that fit the show’s promise and your capacity.
Use brainstorming tools with judgment
AI can help generate possible prompts or variations on a theme, but a generated list is not evidence of audience demand. Check suggestions against your listener promise, your own knowledge, and questions real people are asking. Spotify’s idea prompts also include keeping a journal, teaching a skill, interviewing people, and reviewing media; see its official list of content ideas.

Choose a format that fits your idea engine
Format is a production choice, not the topic itself. Choose one that fits how you can reliably make episodes and sets clear expectations for listeners. It can evolve if a different approach serves the show better.
| Format | What supplies episode material | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | Your knowledge, research, stories, lessons, or commentary | You need a continuing supply of host-led material and enough preparation time. |
| Interview | Guests’ experience, expertise, and stories | Plan how you will find and book suitable guests regularly. |
| Listener questions or stories | Audience submissions, questions, or poll responses | This depends on people contributing; have another source of material while participation grows. |
| Reviews, recaps, games, or retrospectives | A fixed editorial premise, such as reviewing works or revisiting past events | A repeatable premise can work without submissions, but it still needs a steady supply of material to cover. |
| Co-host discussion | Recurring conversation between hosts about the subject | Agree on the show’s focus and a schedule both hosts can sustain. |
Think about idea supply, audience clarity, production fit, dependence on guests or submissions, and flexibility together. Digital.gov’s introduction to podcasts recommends a theme that remains understandable to listeners while allowing room to adapt; see An Introduction to Podcasts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How many podcast ideas should you have before you launch?
There is no universal number. Spotify for Creators’ August 26, 2026 guide suggests having enough ideas for your first several episodes comfortably, but says you do not need to map out a complete season before launch. Use that as a readiness test: can you begin without scrambling, and do you know where to look for more ideas afterward?
Try outlining several distinct episode prompts from at least two sources—for example, a recurring question, a personal lesson, a guest, or a review. If all your prompts are variations of the same episode, sharpen the premise or find another idea source before committing to the format.

Turn the premise into a practical launch plan
- Write your reason and point of view. Note why you want to make the show and what experience, perspective, or curiosity you can bring.
- Name the subject and listener. In a few words, describe the topic; in one sentence, say who the show serves and what it helps them understand, enjoy, or do.
- Draft episode prompts from multiple sources. Use at least two, such as recurring questions, debates, personal stories, a lesson, an interview, a poll, or a review.
- Select a repeatable format. Match the production demands—solo preparation, guest booking, co-host discussion, or audience contributions—to the time and resources you can sustain.
- Check launch readiness. Make sure your first several episodes feel comfortably within reach, without requiring a complete season plan.
- Publish and learn. Pay attention to comments, polls, and analytics as episodes accumulate. Refine the angle or treatment when listener response gives you a reason to do so.
What to do if you run out of podcast episode ideas
Running short on prompts does not automatically mean the topic is exhausted. Revisit the sources that connect you to real questions and fresh material:
- Review comments, listener questions, poll responses, and community discussions for themes that recur.
- Ask likely listeners what they want to understand or hear more about.
- Try a different treatment of a familiar subject: a lesson, interview, review, personal story, debate, or retrospective.
- Look at current trends or media related to the show’s subject and decide whether they fit its listener promise.
- Use a journal to capture questions and observations as they arise, rather than relying on last-minute inspiration.
- Review available audience feedback and analytics, then adapt the angle when listeners show interest in a different treatment.
If the same few prompts keep returning, consider whether the show’s audience or promise is too broad to guide your choices—or whether the format depends on a source, such as guests or submissions, that is not yet reliable.
