Choose a chart by matching it to the question: use a scatter plot to examine the relationship between two quantitative variables, a line plot to show change along an ordered variable such as time, bars to compare amounts, and a histogram to inspect the distribution of one numeric variable. Then make the figure understandable on its own with clear labels, suitable scales, and visual cues that do not depend on color alone.
Choose a chart that answers the question
Before plotting, say what you want the reader to learn. The same dataset can support several charts, but the best choice depends on the question, the variables, their ordering, any aggregation, and how the figure will be read.
| Chart | Best suited to | Check before using |
|---|---|---|
| Scatter plot | Relationship between two quantitative variables | Look for overplotting when many observations share similar positions. |
| Line plot | Trend along an independent ordered variable, such as time | Connect points only when their order has meaning; label the units and time span. |
| Bar chart | Comparing amounts across categories | Make the category labels and measured quantity explicit so the comparisons are clear. |
| Histogram | Distribution of one quantitative variable | State the variable and units; remember that binning affects the visible shape. |
Be cautious with pie and 3-D charts
For introductory comparisons, bar heights are generally easier to compare than pie slices. A 3-D chart can also be difficult to interpret when its output is a static 2-D image. These are practical defaults, not absolute rules: use a less direct form only when it serves a specific purpose and remains easy to read.
Prepare the data and define what the marks mean
A plot can only be interpreted correctly if its variables and transformations are clear. Before choosing a plotting function, identify what each variable represents and check its type, order, units, and missing values. Decide whether the figure will show individual observations, aggregated values, or a statistical estimate.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Keep units visible. Put them in axis labels or the title when they are needed to interpret the scale.
- Distinguish raw data from summaries. If points or bars represent averages, counts, or another aggregation, label that measure rather than letting readers assume they are individual observations.
- Explain uncertainty. If a chart includes error bars or intervals, state what they represent. A plotted estimate is not the same thing as the underlying observations.
- Check missingness and coverage. Make clear if missing values, time ranges, or categories affect what appears in the figure.
Choose a Python plotting library
Matplotlib and Seaborn are complementary choices rather than universal competitors. Matplotlib’s broad user guide covers figure and axes organization, labels, scales, ticks, color mapping, interactive figures, and output backends. Seaborn provides a higher-level statistical graphics workflow for relational, distributional, and categorical views, as well as estimation, regression, and multi-plot grids.
| Library | Useful when | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Matplotlib | You need detailed control of figure components and presentation. | Its guide covers figures and axes, labeling, scales and ticks, color mapping, interactivity, and output. Matplotlib documentation version 3.11.2 was observed on 2026-10-04; check the documentation for the version installed in your environment. |
| Seaborn | You want convenient statistical views organized around relationships, distributions, categories, or estimation. | It supports long-form and wide-form data and includes both figure-level and axes-level functions. Seaborn documentation version 0.13.2 was observed on 2026-10-04; check the documentation for the version installed in your environment. |
| Plotly | You are considering another plotting option in the broader Python ecosystem. | The available source establishes a Plotly Python landing page but does not support a detailed comparison of its current capabilities here. |
Seaborn can work with Matplotlib axes, so a useful workflow is to start with Seaborn’s statistical plotting functions and use Matplotlib when you need to adjust the figure’s components or presentation. The official guides do not establish one library as the best choice for every project.

Make the chart readable and accessible
Use color to carry consistent meaning
Use hue differences primarily to distinguish categories, and use changes in luminance to communicate numeric magnitude. Seaborn’s color guidance warns that too many hues force readers to make repeated legend lookups. Color perception also varies, so pair color with another cue—such as shape—when that helps distinguish series or preserves meaning in grayscale.
Label the figure for readers who see it out of context
Give the chart a direct title, label its axes, identify units, and provide a legend when the marks need one. A reader should be able to understand what is being measured and compared without relying on nearby explanatory prose. Keep text and symbols large enough for the intended viewing size.

Inspect overlap and scale choices
Check whether marks hide observations or overlap enough to obscure a pattern. Also inspect axis ranges: a zoomed axis can make small differences appear large. Choose a scale that supports the comparison without distorting the reader’s sense of the data.
A practical plotting workflow
- State the analytical question. Write down the comparison, relationship, trend, or distribution the figure should reveal.
- Identify the data structure. Note variable types, ordering, units, missing values, and whether values are raw observations or summaries.
- Select a chart family. Match the question to a visual form, then make an initial plot.
- Refine the figure. Add a useful title, labels, scales, legend, palette, and layout for the intended reader and output medium.
- Review the visual honestly. Look for hidden observations, overplotting, distinctions encoded only by color, and axis choices that exaggerate differences.
- Export for the destination. Select an output format suitable for how the figure will be used. The educational visualization chapter discusses raster and vector output, including PNG and SVG; Matplotlib documentation also covers output backends.
Documentation and learning resources
The Matplotlib user guide and Seaborn guide are useful starting points for library-specific workflows and options. Matplotlib’s resources page also lists books and other learning materials, while an open educational chapter covers visualization practice, including chart selection and saving raster and vector figures. A book can provide structured learning, but it is not required to begin plotting in Python.
