Plex’s redesign is a staged overhaul, not one simultaneous update across every device. Android and iOS began receiving the new interface on March 31, 2025, and Plex announced the redesigned Roku experience as generally available on September 16, 2025. Plex says the changes make navigation and scrolling faster, but its announcements do not include independent speed tests. The available release notes also do not establish the redesign’s status on every other TV platform today.
What changed in Plex’s mobile apps
Plex began a staged rollout of Android and iOS app release 2025.10.1 on March 31, 2025. Plex framed the new experience as bringing personal media, on-demand content, and discovery together in one interface. The changes focused on making key destinations easier to reach and giving media more room on screen. Plex’s mobile announcement describes the rollout and interface changes.
- More visible navigation: Plex said the redesign surfaced features that had previously been harder to find.
- A prominent Watchlist: The Watchlist received a dedicated, easy-to-reach position.
- A consolidated user menu: Profile, watch history, friends, and streaming services were grouped together.
- More artwork: Larger artwork gave the browsing experience more visual emphasis.
- A dedicated libraries tab: Personal libraries moved into their own tab, where users could mark favorites for quicker access.
When Plex announced the rollout, it said Plex Media Server 1.41.2 or later was needed to fully support the new app. That is a requirement stated in the March 2025 announcement, not a confirmation of the current minimum server version.
What Plex meant by faster navigation
In its March 30, 2025 rollout update, Plex said preview work had improved app load times and scrolling. It also listed fast and alphabetical library scrolling, long-press context menus, portrait mode, casting—including AirPlay for personal media—picture-in-picture, and playback controls among the improvements. See Plex’s mobile preview update for its description.

These are Plex’s claims about its own software. The announcements provide no controlled benchmarks or independent measurements, so they do not establish how much faster the apps load or scroll, or whether the difference is consistent across devices, libraries, and network conditions.
How the Roku release differs from the mobile rollout
Plex announced that its updated Roku experience was generally available on September 16, 2025. The release highlighted top-level navigation, quick access to the Watchlist, and an account menu. Plex also said Music and Photos had returned to the Roku app after user feedback. The Roku availability announcement describes that public release.

- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
That release should be distinguished from a later Roku navigation preview. On November 5, 2025, Plex described a preview with menus overlaid on content, which it said avoided reloading content when navigating within a library. Plex said feedback would inform refinements and expressed hope of moving that preview to the production channel before the end of the year. That stated intention does not confirm that the preview subsequently became a general release. Details are in Plex’s Roku preview post.
Why Plex’s approach to personal media shifted
In a 2024 company post, Plex said music playback was used by 2.5% of its users and photos were accessed by 0.2% of users monthly. Plex cited those figures as part of its rationale for focusing the main app on movies, shows, Live TV, and community while moving music and photos to companion apps. These are Plex-reported usage figures, not independent measurements. The later Roku announcement said user feedback led Plex to bring Music and Photos back to that app, showing that the product direction evolved rather than settling on one arrangement for every platform. Plex’s 2024 post gives the figures and rationale.

Which devices have the redesigned experience?
The dated announcements establish the mobile rollout and the public Roku release; they do not confirm the redesign’s current availability on every other TV platform. In September 2025, Plex said it had no release dates to share for other TV platforms. Because that statement is dated, it should not be treated as a definitive account of platform availability in September 2026. Plex’s support page lists the big-screen platforms it supports, but platform support alone does not prove that each has this specific redesign: Plex’s supported big-screen app information.
If you want to watch Plex on a television, a compatible Roku streaming player is one option, but Plex’s announcements do not say that new hardware is required to receive the redesign. Check Plex’s current app and device information for your platform before buying anything.

What to expect from the rollout
The evidence supports a platform-by-platform history, not a universal speed ranking: mobile received its rollout first, Roku later had a public release, and Plex subsequently discussed a separate Roku preview. Plex’s own descriptions explain its intended navigation changes, but do not show that every device became faster in practice. Community discussions include titles such as “Not a fan of the new Plex app on iOS: How do we downgrade?” and “What do people think of the official response to the terrible New Plex Experience rollout?” Those examples show some user concerns, but they are not a representative survey of Plex users. Plex’s community forum hosts user discussions.
