The software I bought once a decade ago still works, and nothing I rent now will. That line captures one person’s experience—not a rule that lifetime licenses always save money or that subscription software stops working. The example is Plex Pass: the original article’s author, Yash Patel, says he paid about $80 for a Lifetime Pass and was still using it roughly ten years later. Plex’s current lifetime price is a very different proposition.
What the Plex Pass story does—and does not—show
Patel’s reported purchase price and decade of use make the appeal of paying once tangible: one payment, continued use, and no recurring bill for that pass. Those are personal figures reported in the article, not independently audited purchase records or a published comparison of software pricing models.

The anecdote is useful as a prompt to consider how long you expect to use a product and what you value about predictable costs. It cannot establish that lifetime purchases generally cost less, or that software sold through subscriptions will cease working. The reviewed sources offer no broad study that settles those questions.
What Plex Pass costs now
Plex announced that new Lifetime Plex Pass purchases would cost USD 749.99 starting July 1, 2026. The Plex Team’s May 19, 2026 announcement, updated July 1, says: “All current Lifetime Plex Pass holders will continue to have access to all benefits and perks associated with a Plex Pass.” That protects the stated benefits of existing lifetime passes under the announcement; it is not a promise that Plex or any online service will operate forever. Plex says example prices are in USD and other currencies may vary. Plex’s pricing announcement has the company’s terms.

Do you need a Plex subscription?
Not necessarily. Plex says basic personal-media server use and playback on your local network are free. Plex Pass adds premium features, including hardware transcoding and downloads. If your media stays on your home network and you do not need those paid features, a subscription may not be necessary for your use case.

Remote streaming is a separate consideration. Plex’s Remote Watch Pass enables remote streaming from servers you can access; it is distinct from Plex Pass, which adds other features. Before paying, identify whether you need local playback, remote access, or particular Plex Pass features rather than assuming every Plex user needs the same plan. What running your own Plex server involves
Plex Media Server can run on Windows, macOS, Linux, NVIDIA SHIELD, and many NAS devices, including models from QNAP and Synology. Plex’s support documentation recommends an Intel Core i3 or equivalent as a minimum, while stressing that actual requirements vary substantially with usage. A server that handles transcoding or several simultaneous streams may need different hardware from one used for simpler playback. Check Plex’s server requirements and device compatibility before choosing a computer or NAS. The support page was last modified October 17, 2023, so its compatibility information may need rechecking against current devices.

Compare the costs over the period you realistically expect to use the software, but do not make price the only test. A lifetime offer is worth considering only if its features match your needs and you are comfortable with the risks of relying on a product over time. A recurring plan spreads the cost and may suit someone who values flexibility or wants to pay only while using the service.

- Time horizon: Estimate how long you expect to use the product, not how long you hope it might last.
- Features: Pay for capabilities you will actually use, such as Plex hardware transcoding or downloads.
- Where you use it: Separate local-network playback from remote streaming; Plex treats the associated paid options differently.
- Continuity: Read what happens to access and benefits after cancellation, and what a vendor says about existing lifetime holders when prices change.
- Service risk: A one-time license does not guarantee a company, server, or online feature will remain available forever.
Patel’s decade-old Plex purchase illustrates why some people prefer a one-time payment. Plex’s current price and plan distinctions show why that personal example is not a universal buying rule. The sensible choice depends on the product, the features you need, and how long you expect to use them.
