Plex Desktop and Plex HTPC gained official Linux support through the Snap Store in Plex’s 2022 announcement. The promised Flatpak release is no longer merely planned: Plex Desktop is now listed on Flathub as well. Both package sources are available, but store versions, update dates and compatibility details can change.
What Plex announced in 2022
Plex announced official Linux support for both Plex Desktop and Plex HTPC and directed users to the Snap Store. The announcement described Flatpak builds as an initial release planned for Flathub. Plex summed up the launch with: “Oh, and one more thing… Plex HTPC (and the Plex Desktop app) now come with official support for Linux!”
That wording is historical: it explains the 2022 launch rather than describing a new 2026 release.

The guidance does not establish an exhaustive compatibility matrix for every Linux distribution or CPU architecture. Flathub’s reported x86_64 entry should not be treated as evidence of broad ARM support.
Do you need Plex Pass?
No Plex Pass is required simply to install Plex Desktop or use ordinary playback. Plex Pass is specifically required for downloading media for offline use.

Snap or Flatpak: which should you choose?
Neither format has a demonstrated universal performance advantage. Plex staff have explained that Snap and Flatpak allow Plex to target fewer Linux build configurations while supporting multiple distributions. That packaging strategy does not guarantee identical behavior on every system.

When playback is problematic
Hardware acceleration and playback results can vary with the Linux distribution, graphics driver and system configuration. Community reports document configuration-specific troubleshooting, not a controlled comparison between Snap and Flatpak. If video playback fails or performs poorly, check the package’s current support information and investigate the graphics stack on that machine rather than assuming one format is always faster.

What this means for Linux users
The key change since Plex’s announcement is completion of the Flatpak plan. Plex Desktop is now represented in both Snap Store and Flathub, giving users a choice that matches their distribution’s package ecosystem. Select the channel your system already supports, verify the live listing, and treat graphics compatibility as a machine-specific question rather than a Snap-versus-Flatpak guarantee.
