For a navigation triggered by a click or another action, use page.waitForURL() or, in Playwright Test, assert the destination with expect(page).toHaveURL(). For a known starting address, use page.goto(). Avoid the deprecated, race-prone page.waitForNavigation(); Playwright recommends page.waitForURL() instead. Playwright Page API
Wait for a click to reach a URL
When a click is expected to change the main page URL, wait for that destination. With a separate wait promise, create it before triggering the navigation so the URL change cannot happen before the wait is listening:

Use a Playwright Test assertion when the destination is the expected outcome
A web-first assertion is often the clearest test because it states the result being checked and waits for it:

Use page.goto() for a known destination
When the test itself chooses the URL, navigate directly rather than waiting for an interaction-triggered transition:

Choose the wait that matches the event

Why not use page.waitForNavigation()?
The Page API marks page.waitForNavigation() deprecated and says: “This method is inherently racy, please use page.waitForURL() instead.” Playwright Page API reference

The older method waited for main-frame navigation and returned the main resource response. History API URL changes count as navigation; anchor or History API navigation can resolve with null, while redirects resolve with the final non-redirect response. Those details explain why its response value is not a dependable way to identify every navigation outcome. For new code, wait for or assert the URL, then assert any page state the test depends on.
The equivalent frame-level frame.waitForNavigation() is also deprecated; use frame.waitForURL() for a frame URL transition. Frame API reference

Wait for the application state, not network silence
URL change, document lifecycle, and application readiness are distinct conditions. A URL assertion confirms the address; it does not prove that a particular result, dialog, or content has rendered. Add a web-first assertion for the relevant user-visible state when that is what the test needs.
Playwright documents commit, domcontentloaded, load, and networkidle lifecycle choices, but explicitly discourages networkidle as a testing readiness check. A page can keep making requests after the needed interface is ready, and network silence alone does not show that the desired UI appeared. Page API reference

Navigation methods, including goto() and waitForURL(), are covered by navigation timeout settings. The Page API says page.setDefaultNavigationTimeout() takes priority over the general default timeout. A per-call timeout can also be set on navigation methods.

Do not substitute waitForTimeout() for a meaningful condition in production tests. Timer-based waits can make tests flaky; use the URL or UI condition the test needs. Page API reference
Troubleshoot navigation waits
The wait times out although the click worked
- Check the actual destination URL and make the glob, regular expression, or predicate match it accurately. A string without wildcards requires an exact match.
- If using a separate promise, create the
waitForURL()promise before the click or submit action. - If the interaction updates content without changing the URL, assert the relevant visible state instead of waiting for navigation.
The URL matches but the page is not ready
A URL wait establishes the URL condition, not that a specific application feature has rendered. Add an assertion for the relevant visible element or other user-observable state.

The test hangs waiting for networkidle
Network silence is not a reliable proxy for application readiness and is discouraged for tests. Wait for the URL and assert the interface condition that matters.
The old wait returns null or an unexpected response
waitForNavigation() may resolve with null for anchor or History API navigations, and redirects return the final non-redirect response. Replace the deprecated wait with waitForURL() and assert any required page content separately.
