Choose Playwright when its supported languages, managed browser setup, built-in action waiting and testing workflow fit your project. Choose Selenium when WebDriver compatibility, an existing Selenium suite, browser-specific driver coverage or Selenium Grid matters more. Neither is a universal winner, and the available evidence does not establish a general speed advantage for either framework.
Playwright vs. Selenium at a glance
| Decision | Playwright | Selenium |
|---|---|---|
| Core model | Browser automation with release-matched browser binaries and an integrated testing path. | Standards-based WebDriver, usable locally or remotely through Selenium Server. |
| Browsers | Chromium, Firefox and WebKit; branded Chrome and Edge channels are also available. | Browser-specific WebDriver implementations for major browsers, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari. |
| Safari fidelity | Playwright WebKit is patched and is not the shipping Safari app. Playwright documents WebKit on macOS as its closest Safari experience. | Uses Safari’s browser-specific WebDriver implementation when testing Safari. |
| Languages | JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java and .NET. | Language bindings for the WebDriver model. |
| Waiting | Documents auto-waiting and actionability checks for actions. | Provides waiting strategies that test authors use to synchronize with the browser. |
| Remote execution | Its runner supports parallelization across configurations. | Selenium Server and Grid provide remote sessions and distributed execution. |
| Setup upkeep | Install browser binaries compatible with the Playwright release; reinstall them when updating as needed. | Selenium Manager is used by bindings by default to automate browser and driver management. |
These are workflow differences, not proof that one framework always produces more reliable tests or runs faster. Selenium describes WebDriver as a W3C Recommendation and says it drives a browser natively, locally or on a remote machine using Selenium Server (Selenium WebDriver documentation).
How browser coverage and fidelity differ
Playwright: Chromium, Firefox and WebKit
Playwright supplies browser binaries associated with its release cycle. That makes the browser version part of the framework setup: after upgrading Playwright, install the browser versions expected by that release. It also offers branded Chrome and Edge channels, but enterprise policies can affect whether Playwright can launch or control those installations. Its Chromium headless shell is not the same thing as the newer headless mode in branded Chrome and Edge. See Playwright’s browser documentation for current details.
Do not treat Playwright’s Firefox build as identical to branded Firefox, or its WebKit build as identical to Safari. Playwright patches Firefox and WebKit; for a closer Safari experience, its documentation advises running WebKit on macOS. If certification depends on the exact browser brand, operating system, version or enterprise configuration your users run, verify against that target.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Selenium: browser-specific WebDriver implementations
Selenium’s WebDriver model controls browsers through their respective implementations. Its supported-browser documentation covers the browser drivers, while Selenium’s project overview describes Selenium Manager as the default mechanism bindings use to automate browser and driver management (Supported browsers; Selenium project overview). Older guides may describe downloading and managing a driver manually; that is not the only current setup path.
For either framework, write down the actual browser brands, versions, operating systems and policies your tests must certify. A browser-family label alone may not satisfy a requirement for a specific shipping browser.
Languages, test runners and migration fit
Playwright documents JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java and .NET. Its testing integration differs by language: the Node.js package includes its own test runner, while the Python documentation recommends the Pytest plugin. Check the language-specific guidance at Playwright’s supported languages.
Selenium’s language-neutral WebDriver model has bindings for teams using different programming languages. The right comparison is not just whether a binding exists: consider your team’s established language, assertion library, test runner, fixtures, reporting and CI conventions. Keeping a mature suite in its current ecosystem can be more valuable than adopting a different framework without a concrete need.

When migration is worth evaluating
- Consider Playwright for a new suite if its language support, bundled-browser workflow and testing integration match the team.
- Consider Selenium if you already maintain Selenium tests, rely on WebDriver compatibility, or need its remote execution infrastructure.
- For a migration, port a representative test first—including its setup, assertions, authentication and browser matrix—rather than comparing framework syntax in isolation.
Waiting, synchronization and flaky tests
Playwright documents auto-waiting and actionability checks: before performing an action, it checks conditions such as whether the target is ready for interaction. Selenium also documents waiting strategies. The practical distinction is an integrated waiting workflow versus the explicit wait practices used in WebDriver tests—not “automatic reliability” versus “flaky by design.” Neither approach guarantees that a test cannot fail intermittently.
Use condition-based waits for the state the test needs, such as a visible element or a completed transition. Avoid fixed sleeps as the primary synchronization method: they can waste time when the page is ready early and still fail when it takes longer than expected. See Playwright’s actionability guide and the Selenium WebDriver documentation.
Remote execution, parallel runs and infrastructure
Selenium Grid distributes browser sessions across machines. It is relevant when the team needs remote browser execution or already operates that infrastructure; it is not, by itself, a reason to classify one framework as more suitable for large organizations. Read the Selenium Grid documentation to assess its model.
Playwright’s runner documents parallelization and browser projects can cover configurations. Compare how either option fits the team’s CI workers, browser matrix, test isolation and operational maintenance. The useful question is whether your existing infrastructure meets the target workload, not which framework has the more impressive-sounding label.

Which framework is faster?
No comparable benchmark establishes a general speed winner. Test duration depends on the application, browser and version, machine, network, test design, waiting conditions, parallelism and remote setup. A framework-level claim without those conditions is not a useful prediction for your suite.
If runtime is a deciding factor, benchmark a representative set of tests on the same machines and browser targets. Measure the whole workflow—including startup, browser provisioning, execution and CI overhead—and check that both runs exercise equivalent behavior. Do not trade away coverage or synchronization quality to improve a headline number.
A practical decision process
- List required targets. Record browser brands, versions, operating systems and any enterprise policy constraints. Decide whether Playwright WebKit is sufficient or whether actual Safari coverage is required.
- Match the team ecosystem. Compare the available language bindings and runner integration with your existing code, CI and reporting.
- Account for infrastructure. Choose whether Playwright’s browser and runner workflow or Selenium’s WebDriver and Grid capabilities better fit the way you execute tests.
- Prototype representative tests. Include a normal interaction, a synchronization-sensitive flow and the browser targets that matter. Evaluate setup, maintenance and failure diagnosis as well as runtime.
- Choose on demonstrated fit. Prefer the framework that meets the browser and infrastructure requirements with the least costly ongoing friction; do not choose on an unsupported universal speed or reliability claim.

Playwright launches the wrong or no browser
Playwright expects browser binaries that match its release. After installing or upgrading the package, install the compatible browsers using the instructions for your language and environment in the browser guide. If launching branded Chrome or Edge, check the requested channel and whether enterprise policy blocks automation.
A Playwright WebKit test does not match Safari
WebKit is not the branded Safari application, and Playwright’s WebKit build is patched. Run WebKit on macOS for the closest Safari experience Playwright documents; use Safari’s own WebDriver path when the exact shipping Safari browser is the target.
Selenium cannot start a browser session
Check that the target browser is installed and supported by its WebDriver implementation, then inspect the browser and driver management setup. Selenium Manager is used by bindings by default to automate management, but environment or browser-specific constraints may still require investigation. The Selenium getting-started guide covers installation considerations.

A test fails intermittently around an interaction
Identify the state the next action depends on and wait for that condition rather than sleeping for a fixed duration. For Playwright, review the actionability requirements; for Selenium, use its documented waiting strategies. A wait cannot correct a test that targets the wrong state or an application defect.
Remote sessions fail or do not reach the expected browser
When using Selenium Grid, verify the remote endpoint and that the requested browser configuration is available to the Grid. For local Playwright runs, verify installed browser versions and project configuration. In both cases, reproduce with the same browser target and execution mode used in CI.
Frequently asked questions
Is Playwright better than Selenium for end-to-end testing?
It depends on the required browsers, language, runner and infrastructure. Playwright is a strong fit when its managed browser workflow and integrated waiting model suit the team; Selenium may fit better when WebDriver compatibility or Grid is central.
Does Playwright support Safari?
It supports WebKit, not the branded Safari app. Playwright documents WebKit on macOS as its closest Safari experience.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDoes Selenium require manually downloaded drivers?
Not invariably. Selenium’s overview says Selenium Manager is used by bindings by default to automate browser and driver management, though particular environments can still have setup constraints.
