Choose Playwright when its integrated browser binaries, locator-based auto-waiting, and language-specific testing options fit your team. Choose Selenium when WebDriver’s language-neutral protocol, existing bindings, browser-specific drivers, or Selenium Grid align better with your test estate. Neither framework is a universal winner: the right choice depends on the browsers, languages, CI setup, and remote-execution needs you actually have.
Playwright vs. Selenium at a glance
| Decision | Playwright | Selenium |
|---|---|---|
| Automation model | Playwright provides browser automation APIs and project-managed browser binaries. | Selenium WebDriver is a language-neutral API and protocol that controls browsers through browser-specific driver implementations. Selenium describes WebDriver as a way to “drive[] a browser natively.” Selenium WebDriver |
| Documented browser coverage | Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit builds, plus configurable branded Chrome and Edge channels. Playwright’s Firefox and WebKit builds are not branded Firefox and Safari. Playwright browsers | Browser-specific WebDriver documentation covers Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari. Selenium supported browsers |
| Element interaction | Locators re-resolve elements when used, while actions such as clicking automatically check relevant actionability conditions. Playwright locators Playwright auto-waiting | WebDriver provides the browser-driving interface. The sources cited here do not establish a symmetrical feature-by-feature comparison of locator or waiting behavior. |
| Languages and test integration | Documented language options include JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java, and .NET; testing integrations differ by language. Playwright languages | Use the WebDriver binding for the language your team chooses. Selenium getting started |
| Browser setup | The Playwright CLI installs supported browser binaries. Browser binaries are tied to Playwright versions, so a package update may require installing browsers again. Playwright browsers | Selenium setup involves a language binding, browser, and driver. Selenium documents Selenium Manager as the default browser and driver management mechanism used by bindings. | Remote and distributed runs | The documentation cited here explains browser projects and configurations, but does not provide a broad comparison of remote infrastructure. | Selenium Grid routes WebDriver commands to remote browser instances and is documented for parallel, cross-browser, and cross-platform execution. Selenium Grid |
This comparison is based on official feature and setup documentation, not a matched benchmark. It cannot establish that one framework is universally faster, less flaky, cheaper, or easier.
Start with the browsers you must test
Write down the browser engines, branded browsers, versions, and operating systems your product must support before choosing a framework. “Firefox” or “Safari” can mean a branded browser or an engine-level compatibility target, and those are not automatically interchangeable.
When Playwright’s browser builds fit
Playwright documents Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit support. It can also be configured to use branded Chrome and Edge channels. Its Firefox and WebKit builds are project builds, not branded Firefox or Safari; a passing WebKit run therefore should not be treated as proof that every Safari version or environment has been tested. Confirm the exact release-specific browser configuration against Playwright’s browser documentation.

When Selenium’s browser-specific drivers fit
Selenium’s browser documentation covers browser-specific WebDriver implementations for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari. If your test plan explicitly requires a particular branded browser or a browser already supported by your Selenium infrastructure, verify the current browser and driver requirements in Selenium’s supported-browser documentation.
Compare interaction behavior against your application
Playwright’s locator model is designed around finding an element when an operation runs. Locators re-resolve rather than depending on a single earlier element handle, which can help when a page updates between steps. Playwright recommends user-facing locators such as role, text, and label; CSS and XPath selectors can become brittle when tightly coupled to DOM structure. Before actions such as clicking, Playwright automatically checks actionability conditions. This can reduce the need to write separate waits for conditions the framework checks, but it does not make every application race disappear: your own assertions, navigation expectations, and application-specific readiness conditions still need to be correct. Playwright auto-waiting
Selenium WebDriver’s documentation establishes its browser-driving interface and language-neutral protocol, but the sources cited here do not provide a full, symmetrical locator-and-wait parity matrix. Compare the exact APIs and waiting patterns available in the bindings and versions your team intends to use rather than assuming equivalence or a blanket advantage.

Choose for your language, runner, and existing tests
Playwright documents JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java, and .NET. Its testing integration differs by language, so choose a runner based on the framework’s current guidance and your team’s fixtures, reporting, and CI conventions. Playwright supported languages
Selenium WebDriver’s protocol is language-neutral and is exposed through language bindings. That can suit teams with established Selenium tests, shared WebDriver abstractions, or language-specific libraries they do not want to replace. “Language-neutral” describes the protocol and ecosystem; it does not mean every feature or workflow is identical across bindings. - Prefer the path that fits the team’s current language, test runner, fixtures, reporting, and maintenance skills.
- For an existing suite, include the cost and risk of migration: assertions, custom helpers, CI jobs, and debugging practices all matter, not just rewriting browser commands.
- For a new suite, prototype one representative workflow in the actual language and runner before standardizing on framework-wide conventions.
Plan browser and driver setup in CI
Playwright’s versioned browser lifecycle
Playwright’s CLI installs the browsers it supports, and those browser binaries are tied to Playwright versions. When updating the package, check whether the corresponding browser installation must be refreshed in developer environments and CI images. Pinning package versions and making browser installation part of a reproducible build helps prevent unexplained differences between machines. Playwright browsers
Selenium’s binding, browser, and driver lifecycle
Selenium’s setup documentation calls out the language binding, browser, and driver. Selenium Manager is documented as the default browser and driver management mechanism used by bindings, but teams should still validate what their CI image, browser policy, and network environment require. Do not assume either framework is universally zero-configuration. Selenium getting started Selenium documentation

For either choice, test clean installation in the same operating system image and network conditions used by CI. Record the framework version, browser version, and setup steps so a failed run can be distinguished from a browser update or infrastructure change.
Decide whether remote execution is essential
Selenium Grid has explicit documentation for routing WebDriver commands to remote browser instances. It targets parallel execution, browser-version coverage, and cross-platform testing, so it is a relevant fit when your architecture needs a distributed browser pool or remote execution layer. Selenium Grid
The Playwright pages considered here cover browser projects and parallel browser configuration but do not provide a broad remote-infrastructure comparison. That is not evidence that remote Playwright execution is impossible or that Selenium is exclusive; it means the documented comparison here supports a clearer, specific case for Grid, not a full equivalence judgment about every hosted or self-managed option.
Run a fair pilot before judging speed or flakiness
- Define coverage. List required browser engines, branded browser channels, versions, and operating systems. Mark which are mandatory and which are additional confidence checks.
- Use the same representative workflows. Include asynchronous rendering, navigation, forms, popups, and the browsers that matter to your product.
- Keep conditions comparable. Use the same application build, assertions, browser versions, infrastructure, retries, and concurrency for both frameworks.
- Measure the outcomes your team cares about. Track completion time, failure investigation effort, maintenance changes, and results across repeated runs. Separate test failures caused by the application from setup or infrastructure failures.
- Include CI operations. Compare installation and image maintenance, parallel capacity, remote-execution requirements, and the cost of supporting the chosen test architecture.
- Repeat before concluding. One successful or failed run is not enough to establish performance or flake rate. The official documentation describes features and setup, not a matched benchmark for your application.
Practical selection guide
- Lean toward Playwright if its Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit builds or Chrome and Edge channels cover your target matrix, and its locator and actionability behavior suits your test style.
- Lean toward Selenium if your team depends on WebDriver bindings, browser-specific driver workflows, an established Selenium suite, or Selenium Grid’s documented remote routing and distributed execution.
- Keep both in consideration if browser coverage, legacy test investment, CI constraints, and language requirements point in different directions. A small pilot is more defensible than a framework-wide migration based on a generic claim about speed or reliability.
