For a new workflow that captures product prices after a shopper selects a variant, Playwright is a practical default: its locator actions wait for elements to be ready, its assertions retry, and its page APIs can observe matching network responses. Selenium can handle the same task with explicit waits tied to the selected variant or updated price, and may be the better choice when your team already has a Selenium stack. Neither framework is documented as universally more accurate; the key is to wait for evidence that the price corresponds to the selected option, not just that the click completed.
Why a successful click is not enough
Variant selection and price readiness are separate events. A click can complete while the store is still processing the choice, requesting updated data, and rendering a new price. Selenium describes this as a synchronization challenge: an application may not yet be in the state required by the next automation command. Playwright’s automatic wait before an action addresses element readiness, but does not prove that a later asynchronous price update has finished.
Use a condition tied to what the page actually does: the selected option state, a changed product identifier, a known price response, or the expected rendered price. Then read the displayed price. No single selector or wait condition works on every retailer.
Choosing between Playwright and Selenium
| Decision axis | Playwright | Selenium | What it means for price capture |
|---|---|---|---|
| Element readiness | Locator actions auto-wait for readiness; web-first assertions retry conditions. | Explicit waits poll for a condition chosen by the script; implicit waits affect element location globally. | Playwright is convenient for a new dynamic-page workflow. Selenium can express precise site-specific waits, especially in an established WebDriver project. |
| Observing price requests | Page APIs can wait for matching requests and responses, including XHR and fetch traffic. | The Selenium material cited here covers waits and proxy-based traffic capture, but does not establish a one-call equivalent. | If variant selection triggers a known endpoint, response-aware synchronization can help. Check that the response belongs to the selected variant and verify the rendered price too. |
| Browser coverage | Documents Chromium, Firefox, WebKit, branded browsers, and emulated devices. | Uses WebDriver browser options; actual coverage depends on browser and driver setup. | Choose based on required browser versions and deployment environment. Documented support does not guarantee identical retailer behavior in every browser. |
| Team and runtime fit | Fit depends on the supported language/runtime and the project’s existing code. | Existing WebDriver code, drivers, and team expertise can reduce migration work. | Assess your actual repository and team; framework documentation cannot determine local migration cost. |
| Remote execution | BrowserStack and Sauce Labs document Playwright options, with constraints for some connection modes. | Both vendors document Selenium support for browser testing. | A hosted grid can provide remote test environments, but it does not replace a correct post-selection condition or establish better extraction correctness. |
For a new implementation, Playwright’s integrated locator and response-wait APIs make it a reasonable starting point. Keep Selenium if the existing stack makes it the lower-cost operational choice and you can add an explicit wait for the page’s real post-selection signal.

Build a reliable capture around page state
- Inspect the retailer page. Identify the actual variant control and price element. Prefer stable accessible roles, labels, or site-specific attributes; avoid assuming one generic selector will work across stores.
- Choose a completion signal. Use a visible selected state, a changed product identifier, the expected price text, or a known response triggered by the selection. A response alone may not prove that the displayed price has rendered.
- Start response observation before the action. If you rely on a known request, register the response wait before selecting the variant so you do not miss a fast response.
- Select and wait. Perform the choice, then wait for the selected signal. Where practical, verify both the selected variant and the resulting visible price.
- Read and associate the result. Read the displayed price only after the condition passes. Store the selected variant identifier with the price so downstream users can tell which offer was captured.
- Bound the wait and handle failure explicitly. Set a timeout. If the state is not reached, record the capture as unresolved rather than silently saving the previous variant’s price.
- Validate each target configuration. Test the workflow against each retailer and browser configuration you intend to use; browser support statements do not guarantee identical site behavior.
Playwright example: wait for a matching response and verify the rendered price
The example uses illustrative selectors and a hypothetical endpoint pattern. Replace them with selectors and response conditions observed on the retailer you are automating. It waits for the response around the click, checks that the response corresponds to the requested variant, then checks that the visible price matches the expected value. A response body shape is retailer-specific.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const productUrl = 'https://shop.example/products/item';
const variantName = 'Blue / Medium';
const expectedPrice = '$24.00';
const variantId = 'blue-medium';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
try {
await page.goto(productUrl, { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
const variant = page.getByRole('button', { name: variantName });
const price = page.getByTestId('product-price');
const responsePromise = page.waitForResponse(response => {
return response.url().includes('/api/product/price') &&
response.request().method() === 'GET';
}, { timeout: 10000 });
await variant.click();
const response = await responsePromise;
if (!response.ok()) {
throw new Error(`Price request failed with HTTP ${response.status()}`);
}
const payload = await response.json();
if (payload.variantId !== variantId) {
throw new Error(`Response was for variant ${payload.variantId}, not ${variantId}`);
}
await page.getByRole('button', { name: variantName })
.toHaveAttribute('aria-pressed', 'true', { timeout: 10000 });
await price.toHaveText(expectedPrice, { timeout: 10000 });
const capturedPrice = (await price.innerText()).trim();
console.log({ variantId, capturedPrice });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
In a runnable Playwright test file, import expect and use await expect(locator).toHaveAttribute(...) and await expect(locator).toHaveText(...); the example’s assertion lines show the intended web-first assertion pattern and should be written with that API. For example, add import { expect } from '@playwright/test'; when using Playwright Test, then replace locator.toHaveText calls with expect(locator).toHaveText(...). Playwright’s action auto-wait does not substitute for these post-action assertions.

Selenium example: explicit wait for the changed price
This Python example assumes the retailer updates a price element after the variant click. Replace the CSS selectors and expected text with values for the target page. Selenium explicit waits poll for the condition your script specifies.
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support.ui import WebDriverWait
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
url = "https://shop.example/products/item"
variant_css = "button[data-variant='blue-medium']"
price_css = "[data-testid='product-price']"
expected_price = "$24.00"
options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
driver = webdriver.Chrome(options=options)
wait = WebDriverWait(driver, 10)
try:
driver.get(url)
variant = wait.until(EC.element_to_be_clickable((By.CSS_SELECTOR, variant_css)))
variant.click()
wait.until(EC.text_to_be_present_in_element((By.CSS_SELECTOR, price_css), expected_price))
captured_price = driver.find_element(By.CSS_SELECTOR, price_css).text.strip()
print({"variant_id": "blue-medium", "price": captured_price})
finally:
driver.quit()
If the price can legitimately repeat across variants, matching expected text alone is not enough to prove the choice took effect. Wait for a selected-state attribute or product identifier as well. Avoid combining implicit and explicit waits: Selenium warns that mixing them can produce unpredictable elapsed times. A navigation readyState or generic element-presence check is not a substitute for the retailer’s post-selection signal.

Common failures and practical fixes
- The old price is captured. The click finished, but the update did not. Wait for the expected rendered price, selected variant state, or matching response before reading.
- The response wait times out. The page may use a different endpoint, a request method other than the assumed one, or no network request for that interaction. Inspect the page’s behavior and wait on an observable UI condition if that is the reliable signal.
- The response arrives but the wrong variant is captured. Match a variant identifier in the response when available, and verify the rendered selection and price. Do not treat any request to a price-like URL as sufficient.
- The selector does not resolve or matches several elements. Recheck the live page and choose a stable role, label, or retailer-specific attribute. Keep selectors scoped to the intended product control where possible.
- Selenium proceeds too early or takes unexpectedly long. Tie an explicit wait to the specific price or selection condition. Do not rely on a global implicit wait in combination with explicit waits.
- Behavior differs by browser. Validate the retailer flow in each browser and configuration you plan to deploy; framework support does not guarantee the same site response or rendering.
Performance, reliability, and operating limits
Condition-based waits are more dependable than a fixed sleep because they proceed when the required state appears and fail within a bounded timeout if it does not. A longer timeout is not proof of correctness: preserve timeout failures as unresolved results rather than using stale values. Network response observation can provide a useful synchronization signal when the retailer’s endpoint is known, but rendered-state verification guards against assuming the response alone updated the page.
This is framework guidance, not a live retailer test. The cited framework documentation does not establish retailer permission, site terms, rate limits, or jurisdictional rules. Check the target site’s requirements and applicable rules before automating captures. Playwright’s cited network material uses the /docs/next/ channel, so confirm behavior against the stable documentation and the version installed in your project.

Does either framework guarantee a more accurate price?
No. The framework documentation establishes synchronization tools, not universal retailer extraction accuracy. Accuracy depends on identifying and verifying the target page’s actual selected-variant and price state.

Should I use networkidle after selecting a variant?
Not as a blanket readiness test. Playwright discourages using it as a general test readiness signal; prefer an assertion or response/state condition tied to the page behavior you need.
Can a hosted browser grid fix a weak wait condition?
No. Remote test infrastructure supplies browser environments; it does not determine whether your script waited for the correct variant-price state.
