Playwright is the more direct fit when you need explicit screenshot controls or built-in visual snapshot assertions; Selenium is a practical choice when your automation is already built around WebDriver. Neither is established as universally faster or more reliable for Google results pages. For a useful comparison, keep the browser environment and search context consistent, and treat each image as evidence of one particular results page—not a universal or stable ranking.
How to choose between Playwright and Selenium
| Need | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Control over screenshot output | Playwright | Its Page screenshot API documents full-page capture, image format, pixel scale, masks, animation handling and stylesheet options. Playwright Page API |
| Built-in screenshot comparisons in a test workflow | Playwright Test | It provides image snapshot assertions. The documentation also cautions that rendering varies by environment, so keep the baseline and comparison environment consistent. Playwright visual comparisons |
| Capture within an existing WebDriver setup | Selenium | Selenium documents screenshots of the current browsing context and individual elements. Its WebDriver project aims to support interchangeable automation instruction sets across major browsers, though behavior is not guaranteed to be identical everywhere. Selenium windows and tabs · Selenium project documentation |
This is a comparison of documented capabilities, not a speed or reliability test. The cited Selenium documentation establishes basic capture APIs; it does not establish complete feature parity with Playwright’s screenshot options or an equivalent built-in image assertion in that page.
What counts as a Google SERP screenshot?
Decide what image you need before writing automation. A viewport screenshot captures only what is currently visible; a full-page screenshot captures the page beyond the viewport; an element screenshot isolates a selected region where supported. For a results page that extends below the fold, a full-page image or a planned sequence of viewport captures may be more useful than a single visible-screen image.
Record the inputs that give the image meaning: query, capture date and time, locale, viewport dimensions, browser and version, and whether the browser session is logged in. Results may vary with query, location, language, account or session state, device viewport, time and Google’s changing interface. Fixing those inputs improves reproducibility but does not make results universal or eliminate all variation.

Capture a Google results page with Playwright
Playwright’s screenshot API can save an image to disk or return image bytes. Its documented options include full-page capture, output format, pixel scale, masks, animation handling and stylesheets. Choose only the options needed for the evidence you intend to keep; for example, full-page capture and a fixed viewport answer different questions.
In a Playwright project, a minimal capture can be written like this:

import { chromium } from '@playwright/test';
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1365, height: 900 },
locale: 'en-US',
timezoneId: 'America/New_York'
});
await page.goto('https://www.google.com/search?q=playwright', {
waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded'
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'google-serp.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
This example fixes viewport, locale and timezone, but those settings do not control every source of variation in Search results. The example uses Chromium; Playwright’s documentation also shows Chromium, WebKit and Firefox usage. Choose the browser that matches the project you are documenting, and record its version when comparisons matter.
Use a visual snapshot assertion when the goal is regression testing
Playwright Test supports screenshot visual comparisons through image snapshot assertions. Its documentation says the assertion waits for consecutive screenshots to stabilize before comparing with the expectation. This is useful for detecting visual changes in a controlled test environment, but a changed image is not automatically a meaningful Search change: rendering differences can also trigger a diff.

For stable baselines, use the same operating system, browser version, settings, hardware conditions and headless mode used to create the baseline. Playwright warns that rendering can vary with these factors, among others. Review the actual image and set an explicit tolerance appropriate to the test rather than treating every pixel difference as a product defect.
Capture a Google results page with Selenium
Selenium WebDriver documents screenshots of the current browsing context and of an element. Its screenshot endpoint returns Base64-encoded image data; official examples show saving it using language bindings. The following Python example uses Selenium’s documented WebDriver screenshot method to save the current page image:

options = webdriver.ChromeOptions()
options.add_argument("--headless=new")
options.add_argument("--window-size=1365,900")

This captures the current browser view at the configured window size. If the test needs an element image instead, locate the intended element and use the binding’s element screenshot method. Selenium’s cited page documents both kinds of capture; consult the documentation for the specific language binding and browser driver in your project.
Make captures comparable and useful
- Define the scope. State whether the deliverable is a viewport image, full-page image, one result area or a sequence of scrolling captures.
- Fix and log context. Keep the query, locale, viewport, browser version, timezone, capture time and session state with the screenshot. These inputs help explain differences without implying they remove all variation.
- Wait for the intended page state. Do not assume an arbitrary fixed delay means results are complete. Wait for the state your workflow requires, and inspect page state or take a second capture if dynamic completion matters.
- Keep image and metadata together. Preserve the original image with the context needed to interpret it. If you compare images, document the comparison tolerance and review the rendered files.
- Separate appearance from data. A screenshot documents pixels; it is not structured ranking data. If the task is ranking measurement or machine-readable result analysis, use an appropriate data-collection method and separately check the applicable terms and permissions.
Google screenshot use and limits
Google’s Search brand guidance says print use of Search screenshots for educational or instructional purposes does not require permission. It also says to present Search naturally, avoid altering its interface or results, and keep the screenshot supplemental. That guidance is limited to the stated print and educational or instructional context; it is not blanket permission for every automated access, publication or reuse scenario. See Google Search guidelines.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does either framework guarantee the same Google results every time?
No. Query context and changes to Google’s interface can affect what appears; a consistent browser setup helps comparisons but does not guarantee identical results.
Can I use a Google SERP screenshot to report rankings?
It can document what appeared in that captured browser context, but it is not structured ranking data and should not be presented as a universal result.
