Playwright Test includes screenshot comparison through expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(); Cypress’s built-in cy.screenshot() captures images but does not compare them. Cypress visual regression testing therefore needs a plugin or service. The better fit depends on whether you want a native Playwright assertion or prefer to add visual review to a Cypress workflow you already use.

Screenshot capture is not the same as screenshot testing

A screenshot is an image of a page or element at a point in time. Visual regression testing adds a comparison step: the current image is checked against an approved baseline, and differences are reported for review. This distinction matters because both frameworks can capture screenshots, but their built-in comparison workflows differ.

Neither approach proves that a page works correctly or meets accessibility requirements. Treat visual checks as one layer alongside functional assertions and, where relevant, accessibility checks.

How Playwright screenshot comparisons work

Playwright Test provides the toHaveScreenshot() assertion for page and element comparisons. On the first run, Playwright creates a reference image; later runs compare the new screenshot with that baseline. See the Playwright screenshot comparison documentation.

Basic page and element assertions

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('homepage matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
});

test('header matches its visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await expect(page.locator('header')).toHaveScreenshot();
});

Use a page assertion for a broad checkpoint and an element assertion when a smaller region is the meaningful unit. Focused comparisons can limit irrelevant differences, but they should still cover the interface states your users depend on.

Baselines and updates

When creating a baseline, make sure the page is in the intended state and that the environment is the one your team plans to use for future runs. After an intentional design change, review the difference and update snapshots deliberately with:

npx playwright test --update-snapshots

Playwright documents maxDiffPixels for controlling tolerated pixel differences and a stylePath stylesheet option for filtering volatile content. PNG is the default reference format; naming a snapshot with the .webp extension stores lossless WebP instead. Consult the current snapshot documentation for option details rather than assuming a tolerance is appropriate for every test.

Stability before comparison

Screenshot assertions wait for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing them with the expected image. That helps avoid capturing a page while it is still changing, but it cannot make unstable inputs deterministic. Control the data, viewport, browser and host environment, and isolate animation or time-dependent content when needed. Playwright explains that host conditions can affect rendering in its snapshot guidance.

How Cypress screenshot testing works

Cypress’s cy.screenshot() captures an image. It does not itself compare that image with an approved baseline: Cypress states, “Cypress does not perform image comparison itself.” To build visual regression testing, pair capture with a plugin or service that handles comparison and, depending on the choice, baseline storage and review. The Cypress visual testing guide describes local or CI plugin approaches as well as hosted integrations.

Capture a meaningful state

describe('homepage visual checkpoint', () => {
  it('captures the loaded homepage', () => {
    cy.visit('https://example.com');
    cy.get('header').should('be.visible');
    cy.screenshot('homepage-loaded');
  });
});

This code captures an image; it does not perform a baseline comparison. Connect the capture to the specific plugin or service your team selects and follow that integration’s setup for saving, approving, and reviewing baselines.

Make Cypress captures repeatable

Cypress recommends stabilizing the page, controlling test data, setting a consistent viewport and rendering environment, and choosing deliberate visual checkpoints. Use fixtures to control API responses where useful. Mask or hide only content that is genuinely dynamic; broad masking can conceal real regressions. Cypress also notes that component tests can provide a more controlled surface for visual checks. These practices are covered in the Cypress visual testing guide.

Playwright and Cypress compared

Question Playwright Test Cypress
What is built in? toHaveScreenshot() captures and compares against a reference image. cy.screenshot() captures; comparison requires a plugin or service.
How are baselines handled? The test runner creates a reference on first run; later runs compare to it. Update snapshots with npx playwright test --update-snapshots after reviewing intended changes. Depends on the selected plugin or service; teams may manage baseline storage and review, or use a hosted workflow.
What should guide the choice? A direct fit when you want visual assertions within Playwright Test. A practical fit when your team is already invested in Cypress and wants to add a visual integration.

This is a workflow comparison, not a speed or accuracy ranking. The official documentation cited here does not establish a comparative performance benchmark.

Keep visual differences useful, not noisy

Different operating systems, browser versions, fonts, display settings, hardware, headless mode, page data, timing, and animation can all change rendered pixels. Baselines are most useful when captured and checked in a consistent environment. The Playwright snapshot documentation and Cypress visual testing guide both discuss environmental consistency and page stability.

  • Fix the viewport and use controlled test data; avoid changing live API responses when a fixture can make the state repeatable.
  • Wait for the state that matters, such as a loaded header or completed results, rather than relying on an arbitrary delay alone.
  • Choose checkpoints that represent meaningful user-visible states and compare focused elements when a page-wide image would include unrelated volatility.
  • Disable or filter animation and genuinely transient regions only where necessary, and keep the excluded areas narrow.
  • Review diffs before accepting a new baseline; an update should reflect an intentional UI change, not automatically bless unexpected output.

Visual diffs can flag appearance changes but cannot determine whether a change is a functional defect, an approved redesign, or an accessibility failure. Keep functional tests and accessibility scans in the test strategy where those outcomes matter.

Choosing a Cypress visual comparison integration

Cypress’s guide names open-source plugin approaches and commercial integrations, including Applitools Eyes, Argos, and Chromatic. They are options to investigate, not endorsements: capabilities, supported integrations, and terms can change, so check each provider’s current documentation before choosing. The key decision is whether you want to operate comparison and baseline review in your own workflow or use a hosted service that provides its own review process.

Common problems and fixes

A screenshot changes on every run

Check for live or random data, changing API responses, animation, time-dependent content, fonts, and inconsistent browser or host conditions. Fix test inputs and viewport, wait for a deliberate state, and narrow the comparison to the relevant region where appropriate.

A baseline update creates a large diff

Do not accept it automatically. Confirm that the intended page, data, viewport, browser, and rendering environment match the baseline run; then determine whether the change is a legitimate UI update or an environment mismatch before updating references.

Cypress saves images but reports no visual result

cy.screenshot() only captures. Configure a comparison plugin or service and verify its instructions for baseline storage, CI execution, and review.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Visual tests pass but an accessibility or behavior issue remains

Image comparison does not test interactions, semantic structure, keyboard behavior, or conformance to contrast standards. Add functional assertions and accessibility checks for those requirements.
