Use Playwright’s built-in screenshot assertions when you want visual checks integrated with Playwright Test and are prepared to manage screenshot baselines and keep the capture environment consistent. Add Applitools Eyes when its visual-checkpoint and review workflow, ignored regions, or documented matching options fit your team. For dynamic pages, neither tool makes changing content harmless by default: stabilize data that matters, and narrowly mask or ignore only what the particular visual check should not verify.
How the two approaches work
Playwright screenshot assertions
Playwright Test provides expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). On an initial run, it creates a reference screenshot; later runs compare captures against that reference. The screenshots and their updates are part of the test workflow, so a changed image calls for review rather than automatic baseline promotion. See the Playwright visual comparisons guide.
Applitools Eyes with Playwright
Applitools documents a Playwright integration that uses an Eyes fixture and eyes.check() visual checkpoints. Its integration also documents match-level settings and locator-based ignored regions. This adds a visual-testing service and its checkpoint workflow to a Playwright test suite; the exact service, reporting, and budget fit should be checked against current terms and product documentation. See the Applitools Playwright integration.
Which should you choose?
| Decision | Playwright screenshot assertions | Applitools Eyes |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | Teams that want screenshot comparison and reference files inside the Playwright Test workflow. | Teams that want to add Eyes visual checkpoints and configure their matching and review workflow. |
| Dynamic content controls | Mask selected locators or apply screenshot styles to suppress known volatile content. | Configure ignored regions or a match level; the vendor’s dynamic-content guide also describes Layout matching. |
| Rendering environment | Keep baseline generation and test runs in a consistent environment; Playwright documents multiple sources of rendering variation. | Applitools describes visual AI and broad browser and viewport coverage in its product materials. These are vendor claims, not an independent comparison. |
| Coverage choices | Choose browser and project combinations and control the environment used for captures. | Verify the cross-browser and viewport coverage available under current product terms and plans. |
| Pricing and comparative accuracy | Not established by the cited comparison material. | Not established by the cited comparison material; no independent comparative benchmark is available here. |
Playwright’s advice is especially relevant for screenshot assertions: browser rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. The project recommends creating and checking baselines in the same environment. See the official guidance.

Handle changing content without hiding regressions
Decide whether the changing value matters
If the dynamic value is important, make its test data deterministic where possible or assert its meaning separately. For example, a changing account balance may be visually variable but still needs a functional or semantic assertion. Masking or ignoring it removes visual verification of that region; it should not replace a check that the value is correct.
Mask or ignore only the volatile region
For Playwright, screenshot options support locator masks and injected styles. For Eyes, the Playwright integration documents locator-based ignoreRegions. Keep these scopes as small as practical: masking a whole panel to suppress one timestamp also stops the screenshot check from detecting other visual changes in that panel. See the Playwright page assertion API and Applitools integration guide.

Compare composition when exact content is not the goal
Applitools’ dynamic-content guidance describes Layout matching for cases where content changes but geometry and composition still matter. That guide dates to 2018, so confirm current match-level behavior and naming in current Applitools documentation before relying on a particular setting. See Applitools’ dynamic-content guidance.
A practical Playwright workflow
- Choose what the screenshot is meant to prove. Decide which visual regions should remain stable and which dynamic values need separate assertions.
- Stabilize the test inputs. Use controlled fixtures or test data for content that should be visually verified. Avoid masking a value merely because it changes if the value itself is important.
- Keep capture conditions consistent. Run baseline creation and later checks with the same browser and host setup where possible, including headless mode and relevant browser settings.
- Add narrow screenshot controls. Use locator masks or screenshot styles only for known, irrelevant volatility. If using Eyes, configure ignored regions or an appropriate match level for the checkpoint.
- Review changes deliberately. A changed screenshot may indicate an intentional design update or a regression. Playwright supports updating snapshots through its explicit update-snapshots command; inspect the resulting changes before accepting them.
Use Applitools when a service workflow fits
Choose Eyes when its checkpoint integration and matching controls address a real team need, such as managing visual checkpoints as part of an additional service workflow. Confirm current reporting, coverage, service requirements, and plan terms with Applitools before committing. The available material does not establish a neutral accuracy, false-positive, or maintenance comparison against Playwright.

Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a page rather than test a UI change against a controlled visual baseline, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-call screenshot request can return an image or PDF:
ScreenshotNeo API documentation
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the page verdict and billing status reported in response headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Screenshots fail on a different machine
Likely cause: The capture environment changed, and browser rendering differs across operating systems, browser versions, settings, hardware, power source, or headless mode. Fix: Generate and compare baselines in a consistent environment and browser configuration.

Every run reports differences in a changing region
Likely cause: The screenshot includes data that changes between runs. Fix: Determine whether the data matters. Stabilize it or assert it separately if it does; otherwise apply a narrow mask, style, or ignored region.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA mask makes the screenshot pass but misses a real defect
Likely cause: The masked or ignored area is broader than the irrelevant change. Fix: Narrow the region and add a functional or content assertion for any hidden dynamic value that matters.

A baseline update accepts an unintended change
Likely cause: A new capture was promoted without review. Fix: Inspect the visual diff and confirm the change is intentional before updating the reference.
