If a Playwright screenshot shows blurred text on a paywalled page, first check that an account authorized to view the content is signed in and that the text is visible before capture. Then compare the screenshot with the page’s text or accessibility output, and check capture timing and settings. A screenshot records the page’s rendered state; the symptom alone does not show that Playwright caused the blur.
Why is text blurred in my Playwright screenshot?
Without the affected page, screenshot, or markup, the precise cause is unknown. The blur could reflect the page’s access state, a visual effect such as styling or an overlay, an intermediate loading state, or differences in capture conditions. Treat these as possibilities to test, not conclusions.
Use this diagnostic sequence to narrow it down:
- Verify that the authorized account is signed in and the content is permitted.
- Check whether the text appears in the page’s text or accessibility representation.
- Confirm that the expected content is visible before capture and review screenshot options.
- For visual comparisons, match the baseline’s browser and execution environment.
1. Confirm the page is in the expected authenticated state
Use the site’s normal login flow with an account authorized to read the content. Before navigating to the protected page, verify a visible signed-in indicator or another page-specific success condition. Playwright’s authentication guidance describes signing in through the UI and reusing authenticated state with storageState.

Do not assume copying cookies alone is enough. Depending on the application, authentication may involve cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, passkeys, or a combination. Follow the site’s legitimate access flow; do not use automation to bypass a subscription or other access control.

Keep any saved authentication-state file private. It may contain credentials or session tokens, so do not commit it to a repository or share it in a bug report.
2. Compare the screenshot with the page’s text
A screenshot shows pixels; text or accessibility output helps show what the page exposes structurally. Playwright’s MCP screenshot guidance distinguishes visual inspection from using accessibility snapshots to understand structure and read text.

- The expected text is absent: investigate whether authentication failed, content has not loaded, or the site returned a restricted view.
- The text is present, but visually blurred: focus next on rendered styles, overlays, and capture timing.
These observations help direct debugging, but neither result alone proves the cause of this particular page’s behavior.

Make sure the expected content is visibly rendered before calling the screenshot API. Prefer waiting for a meaningful, page-specific condition—such as a known article heading becoming visible—over adding an arbitrary fixed sleep. Asynchronous rendering can leave an early capture showing an intermediate state, but that is only a possibility until verified on the affected page.

Review the options documented in Playwright’s Page API:
- Capture scope: determine whether the call captures the viewport, the full page, or a clipped region.
- Scale: check the selected screenshot scale if the output’s visual presentation differs from expectations.
- Stylesheet: inspect any custom screenshot
styleoption; it applies styles while the screenshot is made.
These settings affect what is captured and how it looks. They do not establish that protected content is accessible.

4. Compare screenshots under consistent conditions
If the blur appears in a visual snapshot comparison, run both the baseline and current capture with the same browser, operating system, browser settings, and headless configuration. Playwright’s visual comparison guidance warns that rendering can vary with the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power conditions, and headless mode. A mismatch between environments can complicate comparisons without explaining the page’s access state.

- Whether the text appears in page text or accessibility output.
- The screenshot options used, including scope, scale, and any custom stylesheet.
- Browser and Playwright versions, plus the execution environment.
- A redacted screenshot that does not expose private account information.
Never include passwords, session tokens, or private account data. If text is present structurally but blurred in the pixels, inspect the affected page’s styles and overlays next; the available documentation does not identify which one, if any, is responsible.
