Next.js output tracing selects files for deployment; it does not provision Playwright’s browser binaries or operating-system libraries, run your application, or execute tests. Diagnose those as separate steps.
What Next.js file tracing actually does
During next build, Next.js uses @vercel/nft to statically analyze import, require, and filesystem usage, then creates trace information about files a page might load. This is a packaging step, not a Playwright test run or browser setup. See the Next.js 15 output-tracing documentation.
Four things tracing will not do
1. Install Playwright browser binaries
Playwright needs browser binaries that correspond to the installed Playwright version. Install them with the Playwright CLI, for example npx playwright install, in the environment that will launch the browser. A trace manifest does not download or install those binaries. Playwright’s browser documentation explains the version-specific requirement.
2. Install operating-system dependencies
Browser binaries also rely on operating-system libraries. Playwright provides a separate dependency command, npx playwright install-deps, which can target a selected browser. File tracing does not install host packages. Check whether the environment that runs the browser supports installing and using the required dependencies; the sources do not establish one universal installation recipe for every Vercel runtime configuration.

3. Find every dynamically loaded file
Static analysis can miss files whose paths or selection are determined at runtime. Vercel notes that files from node_modules may need to be added explicitly with Next.js outputFileTracingIncludes. Inspect the trace output and include required files that are missing, using the configuration documented for your installed Next.js version. The Vercel guidance on files in functions and Next.js output guide describe this tracing configuration.
4. Prove the deployed function can launch a browser or that tests pass
Including files in a function is not the same as running that function. Nor does a successful build show that Playwright can start a browser or that tests pass. Next.js recommends testing production code after building and starting the production server; Playwright’s CI guidance also describes running tests after a deployment succeeds, using the deployment URL as the test base URL. Those validation steps are separate from tracing.

Diagnose the failure in the environment that runs Playwright
- Identify where browser execution happens. Determine whether Playwright runs in CI, during the build, or inside an application route or function. The location determines where browser binaries and operating-system dependencies must be available.
- Match the browser installation to the package version. Check the installed Playwright version and use its CLI to install the matching browser binaries.
- Check system dependencies. Install the browser’s required operating-system dependencies in the environment that launches it, if that environment supports doing so.
- Inspect traced files. Review the Next.js trace output for files needed at runtime. If static analysis omitted a required file, configure
outputFileTracingIncludesaccording to the Next.js version in your project. - Run production validation. Build and start the production application and run Playwright against it, or run tests against the URL of a successful deployment. A build by itself confirms neither browser launch nor test success.
Choose the execution location deliberately
Before putting browser automation inside a deployed function, check that the target runtime supports the browser binaries, operating-system dependencies, and execution model your test needs. CI and a deployed function are different execution locations with different provisioning requirements. The cited documentation does not establish a single Vercel configuration that guarantees Playwright browser execution for every Next.js app and runtime, so verify compatibility for the specific deployment rather than treating tracing as a universal solution.

The output-tracing reference cited here is for Next.js 15 and was last updated September 23, 2025; confirm configuration names and status against your installed version. Vercel’s function-files guidance was last updated November 10, 2025. Playwright’s browser documentation is rolling, so use the instructions matching your package version.
