Yes, Playwright can run browser automation in the cloud. Your Playwright code still controls pages, locators, assertions and network events, but instead of launching a browser installed on your development machine it connects to a browser managed by a cloud provider. Start with a local Playwright run so you have a known-good test, then replace the launch step with the provider’s connection method. The protocol, browser engines, regions, concurrency and debugging features depend on that provider.
What “Playwright in the cloud” means
Playwright is the automation client and test framework. In a local run, Playwright launches browser binaries installed in the environment where your script runs. In a cloud run, the client remains in your codebase or CI job while a remote service starts and hosts the browser. Playwright sends commands to that session and receives page events, screenshots and results.
This distinction matters because a hosted browser is not automatically equivalent to every local capability. A provider may expose Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP), Playwright’s native protocol, or both. Browser engines, browser versions, network interception, authentication, video, traces and parallel-session limits can differ.
Build a local baseline first
Use the official minimal flow before introducing a remote service. It proves that your test, selectors and assertions work independently of cloud networking.

Playwright’s CLI owns the browser installation. When you update Playwright, install the corresponding browser versions again if the CLI requests it; otherwise a test can fail because the client and browser revision no longer match.
Choose the browser deliberately
Playwright projects can target Chromium, Firefox and WebKit. Device emulation and branded Chrome or Edge channels are available for checks that need them. The bundled Chromium build can be ahead of the current stable Chrome or Edge release, and Playwright’s WebKit build tracks WebKit main rather than being branded Safari. Use a branded channel when you need a regression check against a public Chrome or Edge build or a media-codec check; use bundled engines for broad, reproducible automation.

- CI consistency: the provider supplies a known browser image instead of relying on every runner’s installed dependencies.
- Parallelism: multiple sessions can run at once without purchasing or maintaining more build machines.
- Geography and network location: a session can run in a provider region or network that differs from your laptop.
- Operational maintenance: browser patching, container capacity and session cleanup are handled by the service.
- AI and workflow automation: a persistent remote browser can be useful when an agent or long-running job must interact with a real site.
Keep local execution for fast debugging, offline development and cases where data must never leave your environment. Treat hosted execution as a separate trust boundary: review where sessions run, how credentials are injected, how long recordings and reports remain, and which outbound network access is allowed.
How the remote connection works
The browser launch line is the part that changes. Instead of chromium.launch(), your client obtains a session endpoint from a provider and connects to it.

})();REMOTE_CDP_ENDPOINT is intentionally provider-specific. Obtain it from the provider’s session API or dashboard, keep it in a secret, and never commit it. Some services require a session to be created before this connection; others return a websocket endpoint directly. Do not assume that a CDP endpoint supports every Playwright feature.

Provider example: Browserbase
Browserbase’s quickstart creates a cloud session, connects Playwright through CDP, navigates to a real website, interacts with controls and extracts content. You need a Browserbase API key and the session endpoint returned by its API. The shape below shows the connection portion; use the current endpoint and authentication procedure in Browserbase’s documentation rather than hard-coding a URL that may change.

})();Use a short-lived session for each test or job unless the provider specifically supports durable contexts. Close the browser in a finally block so abandoned sessions do not consume capacity.
Provider example: Browserless
Browserless documents a default endpoint that speaks CDP, so its documented Playwright integration uses connectOverCDP. Its documentation also distinguishes that endpoint from Playwright’s own server protocol: network interception with page.route(), APIRequestContext and browsers other than Chromium require the native Playwright protocol path in its product. Those limitations are specific to Browserless; verify equivalent details with any other provider.

Microsoft-managed cloud options
Microsoft describes Playwright Workspaces as “a fully managed cloud browser platform for testing applications, automating browser workflows, and powering AI agents through browser interactions.” Its current overview lists Australia East, East Asia, East US, Japan East, Switzerland North, West Europe and West US 3. Microsoft says customer data is not stored or processed outside the deployed workspace region and that stored workspace data, run metadata, recordings and test results use Microsoft-managed encryption keys.
Microsoft’s Playwright Testing page currently states that a workspace can run up to 50 parallel tests and that reports are retained for 90 days. It lists East US, West US 3, East Asia and West Europe and supports cloud-hosted, on-premises and localhost application endpoints. These are service statements, not permanent guarantees; recheck the current regional availability, limits and retention terms before committing an architecture.

Make a remote test reliable
Wait for the application, not an arbitrary sleep
Prefer waitForSelector, locator assertions, a defined delay only when necessary, or network-idle waiting that matches the application. A page can be “loaded” while images, client-rendered data or consent controls are still changing.
Control identity and location
Pass cookies, custom headers, authorization, timezone and geolocation through the provider’s supported session options. Keep secrets in the provider’s secret store or your CI secret manager. Avoid logging headers or storage state that contains tokens.

Capture useful artifacts
Enable traces, screenshots, video or console/network logs where the service supports them. Record the session ID, browser engine, provider region and test revision with each run so a failure can be reproduced.
Design for retries without duplicating side effects
Retry navigation and idempotent reads, but do not blindly retry payments, account creation or destructive actions. Use unique test data and explicit cleanup. A remote disconnect should create a new session rather than trying to reuse a broken browser.

“Browser executable not found” locally
Run npx playwright install in the same image or runner that executes the tests. If dependencies are missing on Linux, use the installation options documented for your Playwright version and base image.

CDP connection refused or times out
Check that the session was created, the endpoint has not expired, the API key is valid, and outbound websocket traffic is allowed from CI. Log the provider request ID, not the secret URL. Create a fresh session when an old one has been closed.

Confirm the remote engine and protocol. CDP-only connections may not expose Playwright-native features, and a provider may offer Chromium only. Remove unsupported calls or reconnect through the provider’s native Playwright endpoint.
Tests hang after the assertion
Ensure every context, page and browser is closed. Set explicit test and action timeouts, and inspect open downloads, websocket waits and event listeners. Provider dashboards can reveal sessions left running after a failed job.
Different results by region
Compare DNS, geolocation, timezone, locale, cookies and outbound IP policy. Pin a region for deterministic tests, then run a separate geographic matrix when regional behavior is the requirement.

Remote execution adds session startup and network latency, so batch related actions inside one session and avoid unnecessary page reconnects. Parallelize independent tests only up to the provider’s quota and your application’s safe capacity. Measure queue time, browser startup, test duration and artifact upload separately; a “slow Playwright test” may actually be waiting for an available cloud slot.

Do not choose a service from concurrency alone. Compare browser versions, protocol support, region and data controls, artifact retention, failure diagnostics and the operational work your team is willing to own. Prices and quotas vary by provider and change over time, so obtain current terms directly before budgeting.

Can I run Playwright tests remotely from my laptop?
Yes. Keep the Playwright client on your laptop and connect it to a provider session endpoint, provided your network allows the required HTTPS or websocket connection.
Does a cloud browser remove the need for Playwright installation?
It can remove local browser binaries, but you still install the Playwright client and configure the provider’s authentication, session creation and connection protocol.
Should I use CDP or Playwright’s native protocol?
Use the protocol your provider documents for the features you need. CDP is common for Chromium, while native protocol support is necessary for some Playwright capabilities and non-Chromium engines.
