There is no universal best Playwright replacement. Choose based on the browser environments you must test, the programming language and test runner you need, how you debug and isolate tests, whether you need remote execution, and the cost of changing your existing setup.

For an integrated end-to-end test workflow, compare Cypress and WebdriverIO with Playwright Test. For WebDriver language bindings or remote sessions, evaluate Selenium. For a lower-level JavaScript browser-control library, consider Puppeteer—but plan for the test-runner and reporting pieces it does not position itself as providing. If you mean screenshots rather than interactive browser tests, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it captures clean screenshots, bills only clean shots, and has a $5 paid plan.

How to choose a Playwright alternative

Start with the work your test suite must do, not generic speed rankings. The official documentation reviewed for these tools describes their capabilities but does not establish comparable, independent execution-speed results. Benchmark your own representative tests in your intended CI environment if speed is decisive.

  • Browser fidelity: Identify the exact browsers, operating systems, versions, and browser-specific behavior your users rely on. Engine coverage is not always the same as testing a branded browser.
  • Tool category: Decide whether you need a complete test runner or a lower-level library for browser control. A library may leave you to assemble assertions, fixtures, reporting, isolation, and CI workflow.
  • Language and infrastructure: Match the tool to your team’s language bindings, existing browser drivers or grid, and need for local or remote sessions.
  • Debugging and isolation: Compare how tests are run, inspected, reported, and kept independent—especially when parallel execution is required.
  • Migration cost: Account for test APIs, setup, browser binaries, CI configuration, and the time needed to validate behavior after migration.

Playwright’s baseline—and the Safari distinction

Playwright Test is Playwright’s first-party runner. Its documentation describes fixtures, reporters, parallelism, isolated browser projects, and artifact collection. Playwright documents Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit projects, plus branded Chrome and Edge channels and mobile device emulation. These are product-documentation descriptions, not independent comparative findings. Playwright’s browser documentation notes that browser binaries are tied to specific Playwright versions, so upgrading Playwright can also change the supported browser versions.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

WebKit is not branded Safari. Playwright says its WebKit build derives from the latest WebKit main branch; it is not the branded Safari browser. For cases where Safari-specific behavior matters, test the exact environment you ship to. Playwright recommends running WebKit on macOS for the closest Safari experience in cases such as video playback. Do not treat a WebKit project as proof that a branded Safari release has been tested.

Playwright’s migration guidance recommends locators and web-first assertions over older ElementHandle patterns and notes that auto-waiting can make explicit waits unnecessary in many cases. Those are Playwright’s own recommendations; validate them against your test design rather than treating them as neutral migration findings. See Playwright’s Puppeteer migration guide.

Option What the official documentation establishes Reason to evaluate it Check before adopting
Cypress Cypress describes a free, open-source locally installed App and a separate paid Cloud service for recording runs, surfacing results, and analytics. Its platform covers end-to-end, component, and accessibility testing. Cypress documentation Evaluate it if you want an integrated front-end testing workflow and local interactive use. Confirm its current browser support meets your matrix and decide whether Cloud features are necessary. Product descriptions are vendor positioning, not neutral comparative evidence.
Selenium Selenium documents WebDriver language bindings and browser implementations, local or remote control through Selenium Server, and WebDriver BiDi event streaming. It identifies WebDriver as a W3C Recommendation. Selenium WebDriver documentation Evaluate it if your team has WebDriver investment, needs language flexibility, or requires remote browser sessions. Choose and validate the language binding, browser driver, grid or remote setup, wait strategy, and the test framework around WebDriver.
Puppeteer The current landing documentation identifies Puppeteer 25.12.0 and describes a JavaScript library for controlling Chrome or Firefox through the DevTools Protocol or WebDriver BiDi; it runs headless by default. The standard puppeteer package downloads compatible Chrome; puppeteer-core does not. Puppeteer documentation Evaluate it for focused JavaScript browser-control tasks when you want to choose your own test architecture. Verify browser needs and account for the runner, reporting, isolation, and CI workflow you will need for a full suite. Package-manager policies that block install scripts can prevent automatic browser downloads.
WebdriverIO Its getting-started documentation covers version 9.x and later, a CLI setup wizard, a test-runner route, standalone mode, and action recording to generate test scripts. WebdriverIO getting started Evaluate it if its configured runner or standalone browser automation fits your JavaScript tooling. Verify specific browser, language, mobile, and service requirements against its detailed current documentation; the getting-started guide alone does not establish a complete support matrix.

When Cypress is a better fit

Cypress separates its local application from its hosted service. The locally installed Cypress App is free and open source; Cypress Cloud is a paid service for recording runs, showing results, and analytics. If local interactive testing is enough, assess the App on its own. If you need hosted run recording or analytics, include Cloud in your evaluation and confirm its current pricing and features directly with Cypress.

Cypress describes its scope as end-to-end, component, and accessibility testing. That is the vendor’s product description, not an independent assessment of how well it fits a particular project. Compare the browser matrix, test workflow, and any Cloud requirement with your own needs.

When Selenium is a better fit

Selenium is worth evaluating when standards-based WebDriver sessions, language bindings, or remote execution are central. Selenium’s documentation says: “WebDriver drives a browser natively, as a user would, either locally or on a remote machine using the Selenium server.” The same documentation describes WebDriver BiDi as a bidirectional protocol with a WebSocket connection for receiving and reacting to events such as network requests, console messages, and JavaScript errors.

WebDriver is an automation interface, not by itself a complete test workflow. Choose the binding and browser implementation, decide how sessions run locally or remotely, and select the runner, assertions, waits, and reporting your suite needs. Existing grid or driver infrastructure can make Selenium more practical; a new setup may add operational work.

When Puppeteer is a better fit

Puppeteer is a JavaScript library rather than a first-party test runner comparable to Playwright Test. Its documentation describes control of Chrome or Firefox through the DevTools Protocol or WebDriver BiDi. It runs headless by default. If you select it for end-to-end testing, plan how your team will provide test discovery, assertions, fixtures, isolation, reports, and CI execution.

The standard puppeteer install downloads a compatible Chrome. puppeteer-core does not download a browser, so use it when you intend to manage the browser separately. If your package manager blocks install scripts, the automatic download can fail; follow Puppeteer’s installation guidance for the browser setup supported by your environment.

Playwright’s own migration page says many Puppeteer APIs can be used as is, while recommending a move from ElementHandle patterns to locators and web-first assertions. Treat this as Playwright’s guidance, not a guarantee that your project’s migration will be simple. Inventory APIs, browser assumptions, and CI setup, then validate a representative group of tests before committing to a rewrite.

When WebdriverIO is a better fit

WebdriverIO’s current getting-started guide covers v9.x and later and offers a setup wizard, a test-runner path, standalone mode, and action recording. That gives teams more than one starting point: configure a runner for a suite, or use standalone automation where a full runner is not the right shape.

The guide is not a complete independent comparison of browser, language, mobile, or service support. Before adoption, check the detailed documentation for the exact combination you need and prove it in a small project using your intended CI and browser versions.

A practical migration and evaluation plan

  1. Write down the must-pass matrix. List target browsers and branded channels, operating systems, browser versions, and features such as video, authentication, or remote sessions. Mark requirements that cannot be approximated by another engine.
  2. Choose the category first. Decide whether the team needs an integrated runner or a browser-control library. If considering Puppeteer, include the runner and reporting work in the decision; if considering Selenium, include the binding, driver, and remote-session setup.
  3. Build a representative pilot. Port a few tests that exercise navigation, dynamic UI, assertions, and failure reporting. Include one test that reflects your most browser-specific risk.
  4. Run it in the intended environment. Use the same browser versions, operating systems, CI workers, and remote infrastructure planned for production tests. Compare completion time and debugging effort on your workload, not a generic ranking.
  5. Test isolation and failure diagnosis. Check whether parallel runs interfere with state, whether artifacts and logs are available when a test fails, and whether the team’s debugging process remains workable.
  6. Estimate full migration effort. Include dependency and browser installation changes, test rewrites, runner configuration, CI updates, retraining, and time to maintain any grid or hosted service.
  7. Make the decision reversible where possible. Keep the pilot separate, record the browser and package versions, and migrate a bounded group before replacing a working suite.

Performance, reliability, and cost

There is no source-backed universal speed winner among these options. The official documentation reviewed describes features and setup rather than comparable independent benchmarks. Measure a workload that resembles your suite, including browser startup, parallel workers, retries, remote-session latency, and artifact collection. A faster local run may not represent your CI or remote-browser experience.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Reliability depends on more than the automation API: browser and driver versions, test isolation, waits, application state, CI resources, and remote infrastructure all matter. Pin and record the versions used in your pilot, especially where a framework expects browser binaries matched to its release. For Selenium, include the selected driver and server or grid; for Puppeteer, include browser download and installation behavior.

Do not compare cost only by license price. Cypress’s local App is free and open source, while Cypress Cloud is a separate paid service. For every candidate, verify current service or infrastructure charges if you need hosted recording, remote browsers, grid capacity, or other paid components. The documentation cited here does not establish a comparable total cost for the alternatives.

Common evaluation problems

Assuming WebKit means branded Safari

Cause: Engine names can look like browser names. Fix: Treat Playwright WebKit as WebKit, not branded Safari, and test Safari-specific requirements on the target environment—particularly macOS for cases such as video playback.

Comparing a library with a complete runner

Cause: Puppeteer focuses on browser control, while Playwright Test supplies a first-party test workflow. Fix: Include runner, reporting, isolation, and CI implementation in the Puppeteer evaluation rather than comparing API calls alone.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Browser installation fails after installing Puppeteer

Cause: An install script may be blocked, or the team may have chosen puppeteer-core, which does not download a browser. Fix: Confirm which package is installed, check package-manager install-script policy, and use Puppeteer’s installation guidance to provision the required browser.

A remote Selenium test cannot start a session

Cause: WebDriver needs a compatible browser implementation and, for remote control, reachable Selenium Server infrastructure. Fix: Verify the binding, browser driver or implementation, server or grid availability, and requested capabilities as one end-to-end setup.

Tests pass locally but fail in CI

Cause: Local and CI environments may differ in browser version, operating system, resources, timing, or session setup. Fix: Reproduce the CI browser and OS in the pilot, pin relevant versions, and inspect available logs and artifacts before changing waits or retry counts.

For screenshot capture rather than browser testing

Screenshot APIs solve a different problem from Playwright alternatives: they return captured images or PDFs instead of providing a browser test suite for assertions and interaction checks. If the need is to capture pages rather than validate application behavior, ScreenshotNeo is the first alternative to try: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; only clean shots are billed; and its $5 paid plan is the lowest paid plan stated here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Or skip the browser setup

Make a screenshot with one GET request. The example uses Stripe as the target; replace it with the page you need. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents use the capture tools. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.
