Neither PlayStation Plus nor buying games individually is always cheaper. Compare the games you expect to play, their current prices in your region, and any subscription benefits you will actually use. For US prices listed by PlayStation in 2026, a 12-month plan costs $79.99 for Essential, $134.99 for Extra, or $159.99 for Premium. Buying one or two specific games can cost less; Extra or Premium may make sense if you will play several included catalog games while they remain available.
How to compare the cost fairly
Choose one timeframe—usually 12 months—and compare the same games and multiplayer needs on both sides. Use current prices from the PlayStation Store or the retailer where you plan to buy; sale prices and editions can differ.
- List the games you expect to play. For the buying option, note the current price and edition of each. For a subscription, include only titles you genuinely plan to play that are currently in the Game Catalog.
- Add up individual game prices. If buying discs, account for possible resale or lending only if those matter to you; neither guarantees cash recovery.
- Choose the lowest Plus tier that fits your needs. Essential covers core benefits, including monthly games and online multiplayer. Extra adds Game Catalog access and Ubisoft+ Classics. Premium adds the Classics Catalog, game trials and cloud streaming, among other benefits. See PlayStation’s US plan details.
- Include multiplayer costs where needed. PlayStation says most purchased PS4 and PS5 games require Plus for online multiplayer, while most free-to-play games do not. If you buy games but need Plus to play them online, add Essential to the individual-purchase total.
- Include anything outside the subscription. Add the price of games you still want but that are not included in the chosen tier’s benefits.
In short: individual buying = intended game prices + any Plus plan you still need for online play. Subscription = the relevant plan price + any desired games outside its benefits. Compare prices for the same region and period; there is no universal game count that guarantees a break-even point.
What PlayStation Plus costs in the US
PlayStation’s US plan page listed the following prices when accessed in 2026. They are US prices, not global rates, and may change. The displayed annual prices are lower than paying monthly for 12 months.

When buying games individually may cost less
Buying is often the more straightforward comparison when you have a short, specific list and do not need the catalog or other higher-tier benefits. You pay for those games rather than for access to a wider library, and a purchased game is not dependent on staying subscribed for access. A Plus subscription may still be necessary for online multiplayer in most purchased games, so include Essential if that feature matters.

Physical discs may offer the option to lend or resell a game. Treat that as a possible benefit, not a guaranteed discount: resale value depends on the game and circumstances, and disc and digital editions are not necessarily identical.
When Extra or Premium may be worth the cost
Extra or Premium can be a better fit if you expect to play several games in the Game Catalog during your chosen period. The value depends on which titles you want and when you play them, not simply on how large the catalog looks. Premium adds benefits beyond Extra, so its higher price is relevant only if you will use them.

Catalog access is not the same as owning a game. PlayStation notes that catalog titles may have end dates, and access is tied to an active membership. Count a title only if it is available when you plan to play it; some games have announced removal dates.
What happens to games and benefits when Plus ends?
PlayStation Support says that when a Plus subscription ends, access to Plus benefits—including monthly games, online storage and online multiplayer—ends. Monthly games claimed through Plus are unavailable while the membership is inactive. By contrast, games bought at a Plus discount are the user’s to keep. That is different from a Game Catalog title, which is a subscription benefit and may also leave the catalog.

So which option costs less?
Use the total for your own game list and play period. If you want only one or two specific games, compare their current prices with the relevant annual tier—and add Essential if you need Plus for their online multiplayer. If you expect to play multiple Extra or Premium catalog games while they are available, compare the tier’s cost with the games you would otherwise buy, while accounting for the membership’s limited access. Your answer depends on the titles, prices, timeframe and benefits you will use.
