“How to deactivate a PlayStation account” can mean two different things: removing a PS5 or PS4 from your account’s console activation settings, or permanently requesting closure of the account itself. If you’re moving or selling a console, deactivate that console; this does not close your account or erase the console’s data. Closing the account is a separate, irreversible request with much broader consequences.
Deactivate a PS5 or PS4 you can access
Use the settings on the console you want to deactivate. PlayStation’s US support instructions give these paths; menu wording can vary by region or software version.
PS5
- Open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts > Other.
- Select Console Sharing and Offline Play > Disable.
PS4
- Open Settings.
- Select Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4.
- Select Deactivate, then Yes.
These steps change the console’s activation or sharing relationship with your account. PlayStation says deactivation does not delete console data or damage the console. For PS3 or PS Vita/TV, use the platform-specific instructions on PlayStation’s console deactivation page; their menus are different.

Deactivate consoles remotely when you cannot access one
- In a web browser, sign in to PlayStation Account Management.
- Open Device Management > PlayStation Consoles.
- Select Deactivate All Devices.
This option deactivates all consoles associated with the account; it does not let you select just one inaccessible console. PlayStation says you can use it once every six months. To sign out of inaccessible consoles, change your account password. This remote action deactivates consoles—it does not close or delete your PlayStation account.

What console activation changes
Activation connects consoles to an account for Store purchases and certain sharing benefits. PlayStation’s published limits are one PS5, one PS4, two PS3 systems, and three PS Vita/TV systems per account; it also says a PS5 and a PS4 can both be active at the same time. These are PlayStation’s stated limits, not a guarantee that every feature works identically across regions or system software versions. Close the PlayStation account itself
If you mean that you want to stop using PlayStation services and close the account, follow PlayStation’s account-closure instructions and contact the regional support channel shown there. The US support page also describes closure through PlayStation App; check the current regional instructions rather than assuming the same wording or process applies everywhere.

Before requesting closure, understand the consequences stated in Sony Interactive Entertainment’s US PlayStation Network Terms of Service and User Agreement, Section 12 (last revised January 2026): termination ends access to PlayStation services, and rankings, scores, trophies, virtual items and balances, subscriptions, and certain account-linked information will not be retained or accessible. The terms state that account termination is irreversible. They also describe refund exclusions for listed items, subscriptions, virtual items, prepaid products or services, in-game value, and unused wallet balance, except where required by law or expressly provided in the agreement. Closing a family manager account generally also terminates associated child accounts, subject to exceptions in the terms.
