Playing a game stored on a NAS and streaming gameplay from a gaming PC are different things. With a NAS share, the game runs on your computer but reads its files over the network; with Steam Remote Play, the host PC runs the game and sends video and audio to another device. Each approach has its own potential friction points, so the right fix depends on which one you mean.

The four issues below are common failure modes to watch for—not claims about a particular tested setup. The available evidence explains why they can happen, but does not establish that every game or NAS will behave the same way.

First, identify which kind of “streaming” you mean

People use “streaming games from a NAS” to describe two workflows. They have different bottlenecks and should not be troubleshot as if they were the same.

Workflow What runs where What travels over the network
Running a game from NAS storage The game runs on the computer you are playing on. Game files are read from a NAS share, commonly over SMB. Synology documents SMB access from Windows, Mac, and Linux clients, including mounting shared folders as network drives (Synology SMB access guidance).
Streaming gameplay with Steam Remote Play The game runs on a gaming PC, which acts as the host. Video and audio are sent from the host PC to the other device, as Steam describes Remote Play.

If the game launches slowly or pauses while loading its files, investigate NAS file access. If the picture or sound stutters while playing remotely, investigate the gameplay stream. Fixing one pipeline does not necessarily improve the other.

Four problems that can make the idea less convenient

1. Launches and loads can be slow even when the network seems fast

A game may touch many small files during startup or loading. Microsoft explains that SMB small-file operations can be affected by network latency: a file request is translated into SMB commands, sent across the network, then translated back before file-system work proceeds. That is a general explanation of SMB behavior, not a benchmark of game launches or proof that every game will load poorly (Microsoft SMB performance guidance).

This is why raw bandwidth alone may not tell the whole story. A connection can move large files quickly and still incur delays on many small requests. The outcome depends on the game, client computer, NAS, storage, and network; the cited sources establish no universal minimum speed for playing from a share.

2. Asset loading can show up as a hitch during play

If a game requests new files while you move into an area or encounter new assets, network file-access delays may become visible as a pause or hitch. Files already cached in memory may behave differently from data that must be fetched at that moment.

One Reddit user reports occasional hangs when a game dynamically loads new areas from a Synology share (user discussion). That is an anecdote from one setup, not evidence that all games or NAS shares will stutter. Treat it as a reason to test your own game rather than a universal prediction.

3. Remote Play can stutter for reasons unrelated to the NAS

With Remote Play, the host runs the game and streams its output. Steam says wireless interference can make Remote Play choppy, recommends connecting the computer to the router by Ethernet, and provides a performance overlay that can help identify variable network time associated with stuttering or freezing (Steam Remote Play network troubleshooting).

  • Connect the host PC to the router by Ethernet when possible.
  • Reduce competing wireless traffic or interference on the client’s connection.
  • Use the Remote Play performance overlay to check whether variable network time coincides with the stutter.

These steps address the gameplay stream. They do not remove SMB request overhead if the game itself is being read from a NAS share.

4. Setup and compatibility are not guaranteed by SMB support

Synology’s documentation shows how clients can access SMB shares, but that does not certify every operating system, launcher, game, or mount arrangement as compatible. Whether a particular title behaves well depends on its requirements and your configuration; the available sources do not support a blanket claim that all games work from network storage or that none do.

Remote access adds a security consideration. Synology warns against exposing SMB ports directly to the public Internet because of ransomware risk. Keep SMB access private; if you need to reach the NAS remotely, use a properly configured VPN rather than public SMB port forwarding (Synology remote-access security guidance).

Choose a workflow for the problem you actually have

There are three practical approaches. Their trade-offs differ: NAS shares centralize storage but add network file access; local storage avoids that file-access path for active games; Remote Play sends the running game’s audiovisual output to another device.

Approach File access and loading Stream stability Setup and convenience
Play from the NAS share The game reads files over the network. Small-file latency can matter; results depend on the game and the full setup. Not applicable unless you also stream gameplay separately. Centralizes files, but compatibility with a particular game, launcher, OS, and mount arrangement is not established by SMB support alone.
Keep active games locally and archive others on the NAS Active games read from local storage instead of the share. Not applicable unless you also stream gameplay separately. Uses local capacity for games you play often. Steam LAN transfers can copy eligible content between clients, subject to the requirements below.
Stream gameplay from a host PC The host PC runs the game; this is not the same as reading game files from a NAS share. Network conditions can affect the audiovisual stream. Steam recommends Ethernet for the host and offers a performance overlay for troubleshooting. Requires a host PC running the game and a client device receiving its video and audio.

Use the NAS as an archive and copy games locally when needed

If NAS-based loading is the issue, one reasonable compromise is to keep frequently played games on local storage and use the NAS for titles you are not actively playing. This is a workflow option, not a guarantee of better results on every system.

Steam Local Network Game Transfers can copy eligible game installation and update files between Steam clients on a LAN instead of downloading them again from a Steam content server. Valve says a modern PC can transfer game content at 100 MB/sec over a wired network connection; that figure describes transfers, not how quickly a game loads or performs from NAS storage, and the Steam support page does not state a publication year (Steam Local Network Game Transfers).

The feature has conditions: the source client must be idle, the clients must be connected and able to communicate on the local network, and firewall settings must allow the transfer. It transfers eligible Steam game content, not local save files or configuration files. Check Steam’s support page for the applicable eligibility and connectivity details before relying on it.

How to narrow down the cause

  1. Describe the symptom precisely. Is the game slow to launch or load, does it hitch when new content appears, or does the Remote Play picture freeze or stutter?
  2. Separate the two network paths. If the game runs locally but reads from the NAS, focus on SMB file access. If a host PC runs it and sends the picture to another device, focus on Remote Play’s network conditions.
  3. For Remote Play stutter, test the host connection first. Connect the host PC to the router by Ethernet, reduce wireless interference where practical, and inspect Steam’s performance overlay.
  4. For NAS file-access issues, compare with a local copy. Moving one affected game to local storage can help determine whether reading from the share is part of the problem. This comparison is a troubleshooting step, not a promise that storage location is the only cause.
  5. Keep access secure. Do not forward SMB ports directly to the Internet. For remote NAS access, Synology points users toward a properly configured VPN.
