It cannot connect directly to a TV: Epilogue explicitly says it does not output video over HDMI. To see a game on a television, connect the computer running its Playback app to the TV, or consider a separate TV console.
What the GB Operator does
The GB Operator is a cartridge reader that works with Epilogue’s Playback desktop app. Epilogue documents support for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges, as well as Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Micro, and the Game Boy Camera. The stated features include playing cartridges on a computer, backing up games and saves, and restoring a save from the computer to a cartridge. With a Game Boy Camera, it can also download photos as PNG files; Playback can check cartridge authenticity. These are manufacturer-documented capabilities, not independently tested results. Epilogue’s product and support information describes the device and its functions.
Playback is the computer software that displays and runs the game. Epilogue also lists automatic save backups and writing homebrew games to rewritable cartridges among Playback’s features. The GB Operator connects to a computer with a USB-A-to-USB-C cable; the connection is for using the device with Playback, not for sending HDMI video to a television. Epilogue’s Playback information explains the app’s role.
Can you play cartridges on a TV with the GB Operator?
Not by plugging the GB Operator into the TV. Epilogue’s official FAQ answers the HDMI question directly: “No, the GB Operator does not output video via HDMI.” Epilogue GB Operator FAQ

Use a computer connected to the TV
You can run Playback on a computer, then connect that computer to the television using the computer’s supported display connection. The TV will show the computer’s display; it is not receiving video from the GB Operator itself. This route suits you if computer-based play is acceptable and you already have a practical way to display the computer on the TV.
Choose a separate TV console for direct output
RetroN Sq is a separate product to investigate if you want a dedicated console connected to a TV. RetroMagazine’s review describes TV play for Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games at up to 720p, and a retailer listing also identifies those cartridge families as compatible. Those sources do not establish universal game compatibility, current availability, or independent test results for every cartridge. Back up or restore cartridge games and saves
Epilogue says the GB Operator and Playback can back up game data and save data to a computer, with Playback able to make automatic save backups. Epilogue also documents restoring save data from a computer to a cartridge. That makes the device relevant if your priority is preserving a save or moving it back to the original cart, rather than getting a direct HDMI picture. Epilogue’s GB Operator documentation and Playback feature information.
Backing up a game and backing up its save are distinct functions: the first concerns the game data on the cartridge, while the second preserves your progress. If your goal is only television play, those backup features do not change the video limitation.

Cartridge compatibility: licensed games versus reproductions
Epilogue says the GB Operator supports officially licensed Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games from all regions. The company does not make the same promise for unlicensed or reproduction cartridges: their compatibility can be unpredictable because different reproductions may use different hardware. Avoid treating “supports Game Boy cartridges” as a guarantee that every cart will work. Epilogue’s compatibility guidance.
Cartridge condition can also matter. Epilogue advises cleaning cartridge pins and reporting officially licensed games that fail to work. Operating-system support is listed for Windows, macOS, and Linux; check Epilogue’s current downloads and support pages for version-specific requirements before installing. Epilogue support.
