Plasma 6.6, released in February 2026, improves System Monitor’s unit handling and sensor reporting, makes HDR behavior more consistent across windowed and fullscreen content, and addresses several crash scenarios. These changes are in KDE’s release notes; when they reach your computer depends on your Linux distribution’s packaging schedule.
What changed in Plasma 6.6’s System Monitor?
System Monitor and its widgets now follow the user’s binary-unit preference, so displayed storage sizes can use decimal units such as GB or binary units such as GiB. This makes readings consistent with the unit convention selected in Plasma rather than forcing one format.
KDE also fixed two reporting problems: a potential division-by-zero issue that could produce incorrect Swap sensor percentages on systems without swap, and cases in which D-Bus-activated applications did not appear in System Monitor’s Applications table. These are correctness fixes, not new monitoring features. (Plasma 6.6.0 release announcement; Plasma 6.6.1 changelog)
Is HDR calibration better in Plasma 6.6?
Plasma 6.6 makes HDR handling more consistent between fullscreen and windowed content. KDE described the change as: “Unified the appearance of HDR content in full-screen windows and windowed windows.” The goal is more uniform presentation across those viewing modes, rather than a new guarantee about image quality on every display.

The HDR calibration wizard also received a text-overflow fix. During calibration, Plasma temporarily disables Night Light so its color adjustment does not skew the calibration results. These changes matter only when using HDR-compatible display hardware. KDE’s cited release notes do not say that a colorimeter or other accessory is required. Did Plasma 6.6 make KDE more stable?
It includes targeted resilience and crash fixes, though release notes alone cannot establish how often users will encounter problems or how much stability improves across different hardware and configurations.

- Samsung’s 32” Odyssey G5 QHD Gaming Monitor delivers brilliant visuals for exhilarating gameplay that’s more immersive than ever before.
- QHD resolution (2560 x 1440) boasts incredibly detailed, pin-sharp images.
- With a wide 178° viewing angle, the IPS panel consistently delivers crisp, clear hues from various viewpoints.
- 180Hz Refresh Rate and 1ms response time (GtG) allow fast reactions for ultra-smooth gaming, plus G-Sync compatibility syncs the GPU and panel to reduce choppiness, screen lag, and image tearing.
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadows for added depth.
- Graphics-driver resets: KWin was hardened against resets from graphics drivers.
- i3 window manager: KDE fixed a Plasma crash that could occur when using i3.
- Multi-monitor login: A crash affecting certain multi-monitor setups was fixed.
KDE also reported fixing 18 high- and very-high-priority Plasma bugs, described at the time as 28% of all open bugs in those priority categories. That figure is KDE’s report for that point in time, not a general measure of Plasma reliability. (Plasma 6.6.0 release announcement; Plasma 6.6.1 changelog; Plasma 6.6.5 changelog)

KDE announced Plasma 6.6.5 on 12 May 2026, with translations and maintenance fixes. That does not mean every Plasma-based system received it on that date: distributions choose when to package and deliver Plasma releases. Check your distribution’s update tools or release notes for the version available to you. (Plasma 6.6.5 release announcement)

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
For someone comparing Plasma 6.6 with an earlier release, the practical questions are whether System Monitor’s units and sensor behavior matter to them, whether they use HDR, whether their setup matches one of the addressed crash cases, and whether their distribution has shipped the release.
