Quick answer: This headline refers to the original, first-generation Google Pixel Buds Pro and its firmware version 5.9 update, announced on October 4, 2023 and rolled out during October 2023. Google called it the earbuds’ biggest update yet. The six-feature editorial breakdown is Bluetooth Super Wideband, improved Clear Calling, Conversation Detection, Hearing Wellness, lower-latency gaming, and a Pixel Buds web app.
It is a historical update, not a new August 2026 feature drop. The original Pixel Buds Pro later received version 5.11 for bug fixes, performance, and security improvements. Pixel Buds Pro 2 have separate hardware and separate firmware releases.
What version 5.9 changed
Google’s announcement grouped several improvements together rather than publishing a numbered six-item changelog. The six features below are a practical count of the update’s major feature areas. Google’s October 4 announcement is available at Google’s Pixel Buds Pro update post; the firmware 5.9 rollout was reported on October 11, 2023 by Droid Life.
1. Bluetooth Super Wideband
With a Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro, Bluetooth Super Wideband doubles voice bandwidth compared with the previous calling experience, according to Google. The intended result is a fuller, more natural voice from the wearer during calls.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This is a calling feature, not a general music-quality upgrade, and Google specifically tied its announcement to Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. It should not be treated as universally available on every Android phone.
2. Improved Clear Calling
Clear Calling is designed to reduce background noise around the person on the other end of a call, making that person easier for you to hear. The update improved Google’s ability to distinguish voices from surrounding noise.
That direction matters: Super Wideband primarily improves transmission of your voice, while Clear Calling primarily cleans up the other caller’s audio for your listening. Neither feature promises to remove every sound or perform identically on every phone.
3. Conversation Detection
When enabled, the earbuds detect that you have started speaking, pause media, and switch to Transparency mode. After the conversation ends, playback resumes and Active Noise Cancellation turns back on.

It is useful for short exchanges with a cashier, colleague, travel companion, or family member without removing an earbud. Speech detection is not perfect, however. Singing, coughing, talking to yourself, or speaking during a call can cause unwanted pauses. If that happens often, disable Conversation Detection in Pixel Buds settings.
4. Hearing Wellness
The Pixel Buds app can show listening behavior and loudness exposure, then suggest lowering the volume or taking a break. Treat this as listening-exposure guidance, not a medical hearing test or automatic hearing protection.
You still control volume and listening time, and prolonged loud listening remains a risk even when the feature is enabled. Anyone experiencing hearing symptoms should consult a qualified clinician rather than relying on earbud statistics.
5. Lower-latency gaming mode
The update reduces the delay between audio generated by a phone and audio reaching the earbuds. Google announced the mode for compatible games on Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.

That can improve synchronization in action, rhythm, racing, and competitive games. It does not eliminate Bluetooth latency, increase game performance, or improve music fidelity, and compatibility depends on the phone and game.
6. Pixel Buds web app
Google introduced a browser-based Pixel Buds companion for Chromebook users. It lets you change earbud settings, switch noise-control modes, view battery information, and manage firmware without returning to a phone.
The service is no longer Chromebook-only. Google’s current support page lists ChromeOS 128 or newer, macOS Sonoma 14 or newer, and Windows 11 or newer, with Chrome or Edge recommended. The web app can manage firmware updates, but it does not automatically update Pixel Buds Pro or Pixel Buds Pro 2. See Google’s current update and web-companion instructions.
Which features require specific hardware?
| Feature | Key requirement or limitation | Most useful for |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth Super Wideband | Announced specifically for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro; improves call voice bandwidth | Frequent callers |
| Clear Calling | Phone-side processing and compatibility affect results; reduces noise around the other caller | Calls in noisy places |
| Conversation Detection | Available as a Pixel Buds Pro setting; speech detection can false-trigger | People who have brief conversations while wearing earbuds |
| Hearing Wellness | Provides exposure guidance, not a diagnosis or guaranteed hearing protection | People monitoring loudness and listening time |
| Low-latency gaming | Announced for compatible games on Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro | Action, rhythm, racing, and competitive gamers |
| Web companion | Current support: ChromeOS 128+, macOS Sonoma 14+, or Windows 11+; Chrome or Edge recommended | Chromebook and desktop users |
How to check for and install Pixel Buds firmware
The version 5.9 rollout is long complete, but the same procedure is used to check the original earbuds’ current firmware.

- Put both earbuds securely in the charging case and make sure the case and earbuds have sufficient charge.
- Connect the earbuds to your phone over Bluetooth.
- On a Pixel phone running Android 10 or newer, open Settings → System → Software updates → App updates, then tap Settings beside the paired Pixel Buds.
- On another Android phone, open the Google Pixel Buds app, tap More settings → Firmware update.
- If Manual update available appears, select it and follow the instructions. Google says the manual process takes about 15 minutes.
Automatic updates download when the earbuds are used with a Pixel or Android 6.0-or-newer device. Installation starts after the earbuds are returned to the case with enough charge. Google’s general explanation estimates roughly 10 minutes for downloading and another 10 minutes for installation. Removing the earbuds can pause the process; it should resume later.

- Confirm that the earbuds are connected and both are seated in the case.
- Charge the case and earbuds, update the Pixel Buds app, and use a current Android version.
- Use the Pixel-phone path or the Google Pixel Buds app path appropriate to your phone.
- Do not confuse an original Pixel Buds Pro update with a Pixel Buds Pro 2 rollout.
Google says that when the firmware screen shows no available update, the earbuds are current, although staged rollouts and device compatibility can affect when an update appears.
Installation is stuck
Leave the earbuds in the case, keep the phone nearby and connected, and retry from More settings → Firmware update. Do not remove either earbud during installation. If needed, restart Bluetooth, reconnect, and try again.
For a stuck update in the Windows web companion, Google’s documented recovery is to remove the buds from the web app, remove them from Windows Bluetooth devices, pair them again, and retry.

Conversation Detection keeps activating
False activations can follow singing, coughing, brief speech, vocal sounds, or talking during a phone call. Turn Conversation Detection off in Pixel Buds settings when automatic pausing becomes disruptive.
Who benefits most from version 5.9?
- Pixel 8 and 8 Pro owners who call frequently: Super Wideband and Clear Calling address the most noticeable communication improvements.
- People who wear ANC earbuds in public: Conversation Detection makes short interactions less awkward.
- Chromebook or desktop users: The web companion removes the need to switch to a phone for many settings.
- Compatible mobile gamers: Lower latency can improve timing-sensitive play.
- Listeners concerned about loudness: Hearing Wellness supplies useful reminders, provided it is not mistaken for medical advice.
You may notice less change if you mainly listen to music, rarely make calls, keep Conversation Detection disabled, use an iPhone, or use an Android phone without the relevant Pixel hardware integrations. Most headline changes concern calls, awareness, wellness, controls, or latency rather than music sound quality.
Is the original Pixel Buds Pro still worth keeping?
For existing owners, yes: install available firmware and keep using the earbuds if their fit, battery life, and noise cancellation still meet your needs. Version 5.9 added meaningful capabilities without requiring new earbuds, especially for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro owners.
It does not turn the original model into a new-generation product. If you are buying today, compare the original model’s price and support outlook with Pixel Buds Pro 2 rather than purchasing solely because of the old 5.9 headline. The original Pro’s later version 5.11 release was described as maintenance—bug fixes plus performance and security improvements—not another six-feature Feature Drop. See Google’s version 5.11 support discussion and Android Authority’s report.

Pixel Buds Pro 2 are a different generation with separate firmware and features. Google’s September 2025 Pro 2 update covered Adaptive Audio, Loud Noise Protection, improved Gemini Live handling in noisy environments, and head gestures; a June 2026 version 5.203 release was described as bug fixes and improvements. Those changes do not belong to the original Pixel Buds Pro’s version 5.9 story. Details of the 2025 Pro 2 update are in Google’s Pro 2 announcement.
