Start by keeping Adaptive Battery and app battery optimization on; both are normally enabled by default. Then set Battery Saver to switch on automatically at a battery percentage that fits your routine. Reserve Extreme Battery Saver for emergencies, since it pauses most apps and paused apps do not send notifications.
Which Pixel 10a battery settings should you enable first?
- Confirm Adaptive Battery is on. Open Settings > Battery > Battery Saver > Adaptive Battery and check Use Adaptive Battery. Google says Adaptive Battery learns from how you use apps and limits less-used apps when they are not in use. It can reduce performance or delay notifications. After a new setup or factory reset, allow a few weeks for it to learn. Google recommends keeping Adaptive Battery and battery optimization on.
- Keep app battery use optimized. To check a particular app, go to Settings > Apps > See all apps > [app] > App battery usage. Leave background use set to Optimized unless the app has a specific need to run unrestricted. To identify which apps may need attention, first check Settings > Battery > Battery usage.
- Schedule Battery Saver. Open Settings > Battery > Battery Saver > Schedule and reminders > Turn on based on battery level, then choose a threshold that suits your day. Battery Saver can also turn off at 90% if that option is enabled. Google’s Battery Saver instructions describe the mode’s effects.
- Reduce display demand if needed. Lower screen brightness and try Dark theme if you prefer it. These are practical measures, not a guaranteed amount of extra battery life.
- Choose a charging optimization for battery health. Go to Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization and enable it. Choose Adaptive Charging if you want the phone to learn your charging routine, or Limit to 80% if a full charge is usually unnecessary.
Menu names can vary slightly with Pixel software versions. If a setting is missing, search Settings for “Adaptive Battery,” “Battery Saver,” or “Charging optimization.”
What Battery Saver changes
Standard Battery Saver reduces some background activity and may also change display, location, notifications, and network behavior. Depending on the software and device configuration, it can dim the home wallpaper, stop apps refreshing until opened, stop location while the screen is off, turn on Dark theme, delay low-priority notifications, turn off “Always show time and info,” and disable Smooth Display on Pixel 4 and later. A Pixel that supports 5G may use 4G while Battery Saver is active. The effects that apply can depend on your software and network.
When to use Extreme Battery Saver
Extreme Battery Saver is for situations where preserving access to selected essentials matters more than normal phone behavior. Most apps pause, processing slows, the work profile turns off, screen timeout drops to 30 seconds, and an active hotspot or tethering session stops. Essential system apps such as Phone, Messages, Clock, and Settings remain available, and you can select other essential apps to keep unpaused. Google notes that paused apps won’t send notifications, so choose the apps you need before relying on the mode.

Find and address unexpected battery drain
- Use Settings > Battery > Battery usage to find apps or system activity with high use; inspect an app’s background usage before changing its battery settings.
- After a software update, somewhat higher drain can be normal for a few days while the phone downloads and optimizes software.
- Turn off hotspot or tethering when you are not using it, lower brightness, and use Dark theme if it suits you.
- Avoid prolonged heat: Google says heat can make the battery drain faster and may damage it.
- During a low-battery emergency, reduce sustained high-drain activity such as GPS use, video streaming, graphics-heavy games, and camera use.
These steps can help reduce use, but the savings vary with signal, settings, workload, and environment.
Charging optimization preserves battery health, not today’s runtime
Adaptive Charging learns a recurring routine and may finish charging shortly before you usually unplug. Google says it needs about 14 days to learn and may not activate when habits vary, such as during travel. Limit to 80% is intended to extend battery lifespan when a full charge is usually unnecessary; it leaves less charge available for that day rather than extending time between charges. Google says a full charge is still needed every tenth cycle to keep capacity readings accurate.

How to interpret Pixel 10a battery-life figures
Google lists more than 30 hours of battery life and up to 120 hours with Extreme Battery Saver for Pixel 10a. It also gives a typical battery capacity of 5,100 mAh, with a minimum of 5,000 mAh. These are manufacturer figures, not a promise of an individual result. Google’s Pixel 10a specifications state the figures, and Google’s battery-life methodology explains that testing used pre-production hardware and software in California in late 2025 on a major US carrier network. The general estimate used a profile mixing talk, data, standby, browsing, audio playback, and YouTube streaming, with specified settings exceptions. The Extreme Battery Saver estimate used a limited-feature profile; its methodology notes that the mode disables features including 5G. Actual duration varies with signal, settings, battery age, workload, and environment.
