The “pink paper probe” is a research adaptation of R6-FA, a fluorescent sensor designed to detect formaldehyde. In a 2016 study, researchers reported responses to formaldehyde in both liquid and gas; contemporaneous coverage described the paper strip turning pink. The work demonstrates a sensing approach, not a validated consumer home-testing product.

What is the pink paper probe?

R6-FA is an experimental fluorescent formaldehyde probe designed and synthesized by Longwei He and colleagues. The authors reported that it responded to formaldehyde (FA) in aqueous solution and as a gas. Their study also demonstrated the probe in living cells, dried shiitake mushrooms, and indoor environments. These are research applications, not evidence that it is a retail household detector.

The paper-strip version is described in a 2016 Chemistry World report. According to that report, exposure to formaldehyde causes the probe molecule to undergo a ring-closing reaction and turn pink, with a stronger color at higher formaldehyde concentrations. The same report said the solution test detected formaldehyde within 10 seconds; that is a result reported for the experiment, not a universal response-time guarantee.

How was it tested?

The researchers investigated R6-FA in solution and gas, and reported demonstrations in biological and food samples as well as indoors. The paper establishes a research result across those settings, but the available descriptions do not establish a consumer-ready strip with instructions, calibration, a specified detection range, or a validated interpretation of color for home safety decisions.

Formaldehyde Test Kit (3 Kits), Indoor Formaldehyde Concentration Detection
  • OUR AIR FORMALDEHYDE (HCHO) DIY TEST KIT: for rapid detection of formaldehyde levels in the air, is an interference-resistant, high-purity, stable reagent for use in a variety of indoor environments up to 270 feet, over which multiple kits are recommended. To test an entire house, at least one kit per room is required
  • HOW FAST ACCURATE RESULTS ARE OBTAINED: Formaldehyde test kits are for single use only. Simply follow the step-by-step instructions in the supplied manual. Make sure the air temperature and humidity are constant and the test area is sealed. In just 30-50 minutes, you'll get visual results showing formaldehyde levels
  • BEFORE YOU START THE TEST: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that indoor formaldehyde levels should not exceed 0.10 mg/m. Before testing, seal the room for at least 1 hour and turn off any ventilation, air purifiers or equipment that may affect the air for 1-3 hours. This will ensure reliable results from the formaldehyde test kit
  • IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTE: To ensure your respiratory health, test results should show formaldehyde levels below the recommended threshold. If the solution comes into contact with skin or eyes, rinse immediately with water. Store unused test kits in a dry, light-proof place away from children and do not freeze
  • FULL CUSTOMER SUPPORT: If formaldehyde levels are low, results may be difficult to interpret. If you need help, please contact our friendly customer support team. If you detect excessive levels of formaldehyde, ask us to provide you with a free formaldehyde removal method to help improve the air quality around you

Can you use it as a home formaldehyde test?

The cited paper and news report do not establish that R6-FA is currently sold as a home test or that its paper-strip adaptation has been validated for consumer safety testing. A visible color response in a research demonstration should not be treated as a calibrated measurement of indoor exposure. For a practical indoor-air decision, use an established environmental testing service or a detector whose intended use, measurement method, calibration, and performance are documented; R6-FA is not shown by these sources to be a substitute.

Where did the result appear?

He and colleagues published the work as a Communication in Chemical Communications in 2016, volume 52, pages 9582–9585. The Royal Society of Chemistry paper record is available at RSC: R6-FA formaldehyde probe; its DOI is 10.1039/C6CC04254F. Chemistry World’s contemporaneous account of the pink paper response is at Chemistry World: pink paper probe detects formaldehyde.

Formaldehyde Test Kit (5 Kits), Indoor Formaldehyde Concentration Detection
  • WeelenkEco Formaldehyde Air Testing Kit: Rapidly detects formaldehyde concentration in the air using interference-resistant, high-purity, stable reagents. Suitable for indoor environments up to 270 square feet. For larger areas, use multiple kits to ensure accuracy; otherwise, results may be compromised. Each room requires at least one kit for testing
  • Before testing, you should know: The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends indoor formaldehyde concentrations not exceed 0.10 milligrams per cubic meter, as higher levels can be harmful to human health. Prior to testing, ensure the enclosed testing area remains sealed for at least one hour. Simultaneously, turn off all ventilation equipment, air purifiers, or any devices that may affect air quality for at least one hour to guarantee accurate results from the formaldehyde test kit
  • How to obtain accurate results quickly: Follow the steps outlined in the accompanying instructions. Ensure the ambient temperature and humidity remain constant, seal the testing area, and wait 30-50 minutes to obtain the formaldehyde concentration measurement results for the tested environment. Note: The formaldehyde test kit is for single-use only
  • Important Safety Notice: To ensure respiratory health, formaldehyde levels in the air should be detected below 0.10 milligrams per cubic meter. If solution accidentally contacts skin or eyes, immediately rinse thoroughly with water. Store unused test kits in a dry, dark place, out of reach of children and pets. Do not freeze
  • Comprehensive Customer Support: If formaldehyde levels fall within safe ranges, test results may be difficult to discern, while higher concentrations become easier to identify.
