What each tool does
WinMTR: a straightforward Windows trace
WinMTR combines traceroute with repeated ping measurements in a visual Windows application. The official project identifies it as open source under GPL v2. Its workflow is direct: enter a hostname or IP address, set options such as ping size, maximum hops, and interval, run the trace, then copy or export results as text or HTML. The project also documents command-line use. Its project page thanks users for downloading v0.92, and the newest versioned changelog entry shown is v0.92 from 2011; a separate 2025-11-26 entry records a homepage and repository move, not a new feature release. PingPlotter: visual monitoring and sharing
PingPlotter is a commercial troubleshooting product with desktop and Cloud offerings. Its Standard product page describes visual traceroute for two connections at once, local device discovery, latency and packet-loss measurements over time, ICMP/UDP/TCP probes, shareable snapshots, and customizable alerts. Those Standard features should not be assumed to apply to every edition: the product comparison separates Free, Standard, Professional, and Cloud, with different target and platform limits. Which should you use for your job?
For a one-time Windows check
Start with WinMTR if you just need to trace a destination and provide a compact report. It is free, and its export options are suited to handing results to someone else without setting up ongoing monitoring. WinMTR project

For intermittent lag or packet loss
Use PingPlotter when the problem comes and goes and a time history will help show when latency or loss changes. A single trace can miss an intermittent fault; a longer-running view can make the pattern easier to present. Its Standard page advertises time-based measurements and shareable snapshots. For TCP probing
PingPlotter Standard advertises ICMP, UDP, and TCP packet tests. TCP traceroute can reach some destinations that other probe types cannot, but the Windows version may need the separate Npcap driver because Windows can block packet options it uses. Availability and current version information
As of October 4, 2026, PingPlotter’s download page lists desktop version 5.27.13 for Windows and macOS, released August 24, 2026. It offers a 14-day desktop trial; afterward, its free version supports one connection and no remote collection. WinMTR’s project page describes a free Windows application and GPL v2 license. Its latest versioned changelog entry is v0.92 (2011), while the 2025-11-26 entry concerns moving the project homepage and repository. How to interpret a trace without blaming the wrong hop
These tools report how network devices respond to diagnostic probes along a route. A router may limit or ignore replies to those probes while still forwarding ordinary traffic. A silent or apparently lossy intermediate hop is therefore not, by itself, proof that the router is causing the connection problem.
- Give more weight to repeatable behavior at the final destination than to an isolated result at an intermediate hop.
- Compare observations over time, especially when the issue is intermittent.
- Do not identify a particular router as faulty from one screenshot; probe responses alone do not establish that user traffic is being dropped there.
When sending evidence to an ISP or support team, state the destination, when you ran the test, how long it ran, and whether you were on Wi-Fi, wired Ethernet, or another connection. That context helps distinguish a repeatable end-to-end symptom from an isolated response pattern.

How to show an ISP an intermittent connection problem
- Choose a destination that reflects the problem. Enter the hostname or IP address of the service or endpoint you are trying to reach.
- Observe the connection while the issue occurs. For a quick Windows trace, run WinMTR and export the result. For a problem that comes and goes, use PingPlotter’s time history to capture the changing pattern.
- Record the circumstances. Note the date and time, test duration, whether the computer used Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and what you were doing when the problem occurred.
- Share the original export or snapshot. WinMTR provides text/HTML export; PingPlotter advertises shareable snapshots. Avoid presenting one intermediate hop as the confirmed cause unless the evidence supports that conclusion.
Is either tool more accurate?
No credible published head-to-head benchmark was identified that establishes one as more accurate, uses fewer resources, or diagnoses faults more successfully. The practical distinction supported by their product information is workflow: WinMTR provides a free, simple Windows trace and export, while PingPlotter emphasizes visual history, sharing, and edition-dependent monitoring capabilities. Neither removes the need to interpret probe responses carefully.
