To keep a website in Firefox’s desktop tab strip, open it, right-click its tab (or Control-click on macOS), and select Pin Tab. The tab moves to the left side of the strip. To undo it, open the pinned tab’s context menu and choose Unpin Tab. If you meant a tile on the New Tab page, an Android home-screen shortcut, or a page Firefox opens at startup, use the separate steps below.
Keep an open website in the desktop tab strip
- Open the website in a Firefox tab.
- Right-click the tab. On macOS, Control-click it.
- Select Pin Tab.
The tab moves to the left side of the tab strip, becomes compact, and shows the site icon instead of its title. Pinned tabs do not show a close button and reopen as pinned tabs when Firefox starts. Mozilla also notes that links to other websites opened from a pinned tab open in a new tab. See Mozilla’s Pinned Tabs guide.
Pin or unpin several tabs
Select the tabs with Ctrl-click, or Command-click on macOS. Then open the context menu for one of the selected tabs and choose Pin Tabs. To remove a pin, right-click or Control-click the pinned tab and select Unpin Tab. Mozilla explains tab selection in its guide to organizing websites with tabs.

Keep a shortcut tile on the desktop New Tab page
This pins a tile on Firefox’s New Tab page; it does not pin an open tab in the tab strip.
#1 Best Overall
- On the New Tab page, hover over the Shortcut tile you want to keep.
- Open the tile’s three-dot menu and select Pin. A pin icon marks the tile.
To reverse this, open the same menu and choose Unpin. If the website is not already shown as a tile, use Add Shortcut on the New Tab page and enter a title and URL. See Mozilla’s New Tab page customization instructions.
Add a website shortcut in Firefox for Android
- Open the website in Firefox for Android.
- Tap the three-dot menu and choose Add to shortcuts.
The site then appears among Firefox home-screen shortcuts when you open a new tab. To remove it, touch and hold the shortcut and tap Remove. This removes it from the Home page, not from bookmarks or browsing history. Android options can vary by app version, device, and region; see Mozilla’s Firefox home screen guide.

If you want Firefox to open a particular page when you use the Home button or open new windows, set a homepage rather than pinning a tab. In Firefox desktop settings, find Homepage and new windows and choose Custom URLs…. You can also drag the desired tab onto the toolbar’s Home button. These controls change homepage or new-window behavior; they do not pin the site in the tab strip. See Mozilla’s homepage instructions.
