Piklab is an open-source integrated development environment (IDE) for working with Microchip PIC and dsPIC microcontrollers. Its project documentation describes an IDE that brings source and project management together with external compiler and assembler tools, device programming, and debugging. It is an integration layer—not a substitute for a compatible toolchain, programmer, or knowledge of the target device.

What is Piklab, and what does it do?

Piklab’s documented workflow covers editing and managing a project, compiling and assembling with external tools, then programming and, on supported setups, debugging a microcontroller. The project page also lists a device-information view, HEX editor, partial checksum support, register view, configuration-bit generation, and template generation. These are project-described capabilities, not independent confirmation that every feature works with current systems or hardware. Piklab project homepage

The graphical IDE guide likewise presents Piklab as an environment for editing, compiling, programming, and debugging. Its walkthrough uses the open toolchains gputils, SDCC, and JAL; it does not teach PIC development or assembly language. Piklab graphical IDE documentation

Compilation depends on external toolchains

Piklab’s homepage lists integrations with gputils, SDCC, C30, PICC variants, C18, JAL/JALV2, BoostC variants, CCS, MPC, and CC5X. It describes compilation, assembly, and linking through these external tools, and says the project manager can show linker scripts and included files. Some toolchains also provide a disassembly listing. The list documents historical integrations; it does not establish that each compiler is available, maintained, or compatible with a present-day Piklab installation.

Can Piklab program PIC microcontrollers and support dsPIC?

The project describes programming functions for reading, writing, verifying, or erasing all or selected memory ranges. It identifies support for Microchip PIC and dsPIC development, but compatibility depends on the exact chip, programmer, firmware, operating system, and toolchain. The homepage’s broad capability description should not be treated as a current compatibility guarantee. Piklab project homepage

Programmers and interfaces named by the project

The official homepage names serial and parallel direct programmers, ICD2, PICkit 1, PICkit 2, PicStart+, and Tiny, PICkit 2, and Picdem bootloaders. Its detailed programmer table is especially important for PICkit 2: it marks firmware v1.x as supported and firmware v2.x as unsupported. That table was last changed on 2006-11-07, so it is historical guidance rather than a current device-compatibility matrix. Piklab programmer support table

Before relying on a setup, check the exact target part and family; programmer model, hardware revision, and firmware; whether the task is programming or debugging; and the availability of compatible drivers, dependencies, and toolchain versions on the intended operating system. Do not assume that a programmer sharing a familiar product name or interface will work across revisions.

What debugging features and limits are documented?

Piklab lists run, halt, step, simple breakpoints, and register reads, writes, and watches. The homepage and programmer table describe ICD2 debugging for some 16F devices and all 18F devices, with the table qualifying support as partial and specifying a single breakpoint. This is not a blanket promise for every PIC or dsPIC, ICD2 revision, or firmware combination. Confirm the exact device and debugging requirements against the applicable support information before designing a workflow around it. Piklab project homepage Piklab programmer support table

What should you check before programming or erasing?

Piklab’s homepage warns: “In particular calibration words may be lost when programming or erasing devices.” Treat that as a device-specific data-preservation risk. Before any write or erase operation, identify whether the exact part stores calibration data in locations that the operation could affect, and preserve any required values using a method appropriate to that device. The project warning is about Piklab; it should not be generalized into a claim about every PIC programmer. Piklab project homepage

Is Piklab still maintained?

The latest release entry surfaced in the official changelog is version 0.16.2, dated 2012-10-14. It mentions selected 24FJXXXGB1XX devices, ICD2 target-power behavior, and limited PICkit 3 support for specified 18F parts when used with correct firmware. This establishes that the published release record is old; it does not, by itself, prove that development stopped, that no later forks exist, or that current binaries build on modern systems. What does the platform documentation say?

The homepage says Piklab can run on Linux and Windows and identifies KDE 3, KDE 4 from version 0.16.0, or compilation with Qt alone. These are statements from the project’s documentation, not confirmation of installability or dependency compatibility on current operating systems.
