PHYSINT is in development, with Bill Skarsgård confirmed in the lead role and Xbox now its publishing partner. Hideo Kojima describes the project as a spy game that will bring new ideas and a different kind of spy action—but it is a new intellectual property, not a Metal Gear sequel. No release date or final platform list has been announced in the sources available as of October 7, 2026.
What’s new in the PHYSINT update?
Kojima Productions confirmed on September 17, 2026, that Bill Skarsgård will play PHYSINT’s lead role and that Xbox is the game’s new publishing partner. Xbox Wire had announced the expanded publishing partnership on September 9. Kojima Productions’ announcement and Xbox Wire’s announcement establish the casting and publishing news.
Skarsgård joins an ensemble that Kojima Productions had previously identified as including Charlee Fraser, Ma Dong-seok (Don Lee), and Minami Hamabe. The studio’s 2025 anniversary recap named those performers; its 2026 announcement describes Skarsgård as joining them.

What kind of game is Kojima making?
Kojima describes PHYSINT as a spy game, but says it is intended to take the genre in a different direction. On Koji10, he said: “It’s about spies, but I want plenty of new ideas and a different kind of spy action. It’s quite different.” GamesRadar+ reported the English wording on October 5, 2026. That makes “Metal Gear spiritual successor” a useful shorthand for the broad espionage-action connection, not a statement of franchise continuity. PHYSINT is a new IP; it has not been announced as a Metal Gear installment. Kojima’s comments point to shared spy-action territory alongside a deliberate effort to make the new game distinct.
Who is publishing PHYSINT now?
Xbox is the confirmed publishing partner. Xbox Wire announced an expanded partnership with Kojima Productions on September 9, 2026, and Kojima Productions confirmed Xbox’s role in its September 17 casting announcement. What is known about development?
In a Washington Post interview published September 20, 2026, Kojima said the plot and game concept had been written, while storyboards and early 3D-model work were underway. He also said the studio was experimenting with engines and had not settled on one. The interview describes a project in development, not a game with a confirmed launch window. Why did Sony’s involvement end?
The reason remains disputed and should not be treated as confirmed. Kojima told the Washington Post that Sony gave no reason for ending its involvement. The paper also described a Bloomberg account that attributed Sony’s withdrawal to concerns about budget, deadlines, profitability, and exclusivity. Those are reported explanations, not a confirmed rationale from Sony.

Kojima Productions disputed unsubstantiated speculation in a statement quoted by the Washington Post. The studio said PHYSINT’s development was continuing with Xbox and that its relationship with PlayStation remained strong. That statement confirms the studio’s position; it does not settle the reported reasons for Sony’s withdrawal. The Washington Post’s coverage includes the statement and attributed reporting.
