A PHP worker is a process that handles a unit of PHP work, but the term can mean two different things: a PHP-FPM child serving a web request, or a long-running command processing background jobs. They have different triggers, limits, monitoring signals, and deployment procedures. Identifying which one you mean is the first step to diagnosing slow requests or a growing queue.
What is a PHP worker?
“PHP worker” is an umbrella term, not one specific PHP feature. In a web application, it usually means a child process in a PHP-FPM pool that handles FastCGI requests. For background work, it often means a long-running command-line process that takes jobs from an application queue.
PHP-FPM request workers
PHP-FPM is PHP’s FastCGI process manager. A web server such as Nginx or Apache passes PHP requests to it through a Unix-domain socket or a TCP listener. FPM pools can use configured user and group identities, separate environments, logging, and slow-request logs. The PHP manual describes FPM as a FastCGI implementation with features aimed in part at heavily loaded sites; Symfony’s web-server guidance likewise identifies PHP-FPM as the PHP FastCGI process manager used by both Nginx and Apache.
FPM manages child processes according to the pool’s process-management mode: static, dynamic, or ondemand. Pool limits and the listener determine how many requests can be handled at once and how incoming work is queued when capacity is occupied.

Application queue workers
A queue worker is typically a long-running CLI process. For example, Laravel’s php artisan queue:work keeps running and processes jobs as they arrive on a queue. It is not the same process as an FPM child, and a queued job does not need to occupy the request-serving process for the entire time it takes to finish.
PHP-FPM workers and queue workers compared
| Question | PHP-FPM request worker | Framework queue worker |
|---|---|---|
| What starts the work? | An incoming HTTP request passed to PHP through FastCGI. | A job available on an application queue. |
| What kind of process is it? | A child process managed inside an FPM pool. | A long-lived command-line process, such as Laravel’s queue:work. |
| What commonly limits capacity? | Concurrent requests, the listener backlog, and memory available per child. | Queue depth, job duration, retries, worker memory growth, and how much concurrent work downstream services can handle. |
| How is it controlled? | FPM pool settings, including process mode and pool limits, plus the socket or TCP listener. | Worker processes and queue options such as queue selection, timeout, and maximum jobs. |
| What deployment action matters? | Safely reload or restart FPM when its configuration or PHP runtime needs it. | Gracefully restart long-lived workers so they load the new application code. |
How many PHP-FPM workers do you need?
There is no reliable universal worker count. The right pool size depends on the memory available to PHP, the memory used by each child under your application’s workload, request concurrency, and the capacity of the services those requests call. A setting that fits one application or server may exhaust memory or leave requests waiting on another.

Choose a pool process mode and limits that suit the traffic pattern, then observe the pool under representative load. If requests wait while all children are busy, increasing capacity may help only if the server has room for additional children and the application’s dependencies can handle the added concurrency. If children use too much memory, raising the limit can make the problem worse. The goal is not to maximize the process count; it is to keep request handling responsive without oversubscribing the server.
How to monitor PHP-FPM workers
FPM can expose a status page with counters that help distinguish waiting requests, pool saturation, and slow application work. PHP’s manual warns that this endpoint exposes resource information, so restrict it to internal or otherwise trusted clients rather than making it publicly accessible.

| Status field | What it helps you assess |
|---|---|
listen queue |
Requests waiting at the listener for an available worker. |
idle processes |
How many pool children are currently idle. |
active processes |
How many children are currently handling work. |
total processes |
The current number of child processes in the pool. |
max active processes |
The highest active-process count recorded by the status output. |
slow requests |
Whether the pool has recorded requests classified as slow. |
memory peak |
The reported memory peak for the status data. |
Read these fields together rather than treating any one counter as a complete diagnosis. A listen queue alongside no idle processes suggests requests are waiting for pool capacity; slow-request counts point toward investigating application paths that take a long time. Compare the status output over time with application logs and the behavior users report.

Queue workers are long-lived and retain booted application state. Laravel’s 11.x queue documentation therefore recommends restarting workers during deployment so they pick up new code, and using a process monitor such as Supervisor to keep them running.

Coordinate timeout and retry behavior
Laravel documents a default queue-worker --timeout of 60 seconds. Set the timeout for the expected job duration and keep it several seconds shorter than the queue connection’s retry_after. If retry_after is shorter than the time a worker may continue running a frozen job, the queue can make that job available again while the original process is still working, potentially causing duplicate processing.
Choose queues and worker counts deliberately
Laravel workers can target queues in priority order, for example --queue=high,default. Run multiple workers only when the job workload and downstream systems can safely support concurrent processing; more processes are not automatically faster if they overload a database or another dependency.

Recycle workers when useful
Long-running processes can accumulate memory over time. Laravel’s --max-jobs option can bound how many jobs a worker handles before it exits, allowing the process monitor to start a fresh worker. The monitor should also make sure workers return after exits and that their logs and shutdown behavior are visible to operators.
Why move slow work out of an HTTP request?
A subprocess launched during an HTTP request keeps that PHP-FPM process unavailable until the subprocess finishes. Symfony’s Process documentation recommends using a job queue for work that should continue beyond the response or may take significant time. Sending such work to a queue lets the request return without tying up a request-serving child for the full job duration.
