Try IrfanView first if you use Windows. Its official slideshow help documents a Show text option that can display file information, including EXIF, IPTC, and comment information while each photo is on screen. Choose ACDSee Photo Studio Professional 2026 when you need polished, configurable captions; digiKam for free cataloging and metadata management; or XnView MP for a cross-platform workflow where you are prepared to verify the exact metadata field.
First identify what “comment” means
Photo software does not use one universal comment field. Your text may be stored as a JPEG Comment, IPTC Caption/Description, XMP Description, an application’s catalog note, or merely a filename. EXIF normally contains camera and capture details rather than a narrative caption. A database note or XMP sidecar may be visible in one organizer but unavailable to another viewer unless it is synchronized or embedded in the image.
Test one known photograph: inspect its metadata, note the exact field containing the text, and confirm that the slideshow software reads that same field. Showing a filename is not the same as showing a caption.

IrfanView: the simplest Windows route
IrfanView’s official slideshow help explicitly covers file information, EXIF, IPTC, and comment information. The overlay is rendered during playback; it does not modify the original photograph.

- Open IrfanView and launch the slideshow function.
- Add or select the photographs.
- Enable Show text.
- Open the file-information or text-template options and include the desired comment, IPTC, or EXIF field. Field codes vary by installed version, so use that version’s “text possibilities” help rather than copying an unverified code.
- Set an interval, or choose a mode that waits for a key or mouse action before advancing.
- Preview using a test image and confirm that the expected field appears.
If the overlay is blank, the text may be stored in a different metadata schema, an XMP sidecar, or an application database. IrfanView is functional rather than modern-looking, and its Windows-focused workflow offers less caption styling than ACDSee. ACDSee: best for formatted captions
ACDSee Photo Studio Professional 2026 is the strongest choice when the caption must be legible and deliberately designed. Its Professional 2026 help documents slideshow header and footer text, an Insert Metadata Tag control, and font, color, alignment, and placement settings. Its separate View-mode Header/Footer tool can help you inspect the overlay before running a full slideshow.

- Open the photographs in Manage or View mode and start the slideshow.
- Open slideshow text settings and enable a header or footer.
- Choose Insert Metadata Tag, then select the available caption, description, comment, filename, or other field.
- Set font, size, color, alignment, and background options.
- Save the layout if you will reuse it, then test several files.
ACDSee may label the same idea as caption, description, notes, or comment depending on the metadata schema. A catalog-only value may not be available unless it has been written to the image or supported sidecar. Pricing changes frequently; verify the current purchase page before buying.
digiKam: free cataloging with metadata overlays
digiKam suits users who manage albums, tags, ratings, and captions rather than simply opening a folder. Its slideshow documentation describes an on-screen display that can show selected metadata at the bottom of the image. The Captions View documentation covers title and caption editing and synchronization between the catalog and image metadata.

- Import or open the album containing the photographs.
- Select the images and choose View → Slideshow.
- Open slideshow settings and enable the available metadata or properties display.
- Choose the relevant field and confirm that it appears at the bottom of the image.
- If it is missing, inspect Caption/Description and synchronize the database and file metadata, then test again.
The exact fields exposed can change between builds, so verify the options in your installed version.
XnView MP and FastStone alternatives
XnView MP
XnView MP runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux and supports slideshow viewing plus EXIF, IPTC, and XMP metadata. Its beginner guide covers IPTC captions and Browse-view display. It is a good lightweight organizer, but the available official material does not establish a universal mapping from every narrative comment field to slideshow overlay text. Test your current release before preparing a large collection. Private, educational, and nonprofit use is free; company use requires a license.

FastStone Image Viewer
FastStone’s feature page lists slideshow playback, EXIF support, JPEG comment editing, and insertion of metadata text in slideshows and contact sheets. It is a fast Windows viewer with effects and music, but its documentation is less explicit about arbitrary long-form comments than IrfanView. The download page currently lists version 8.5 dated June 24, 2026; check current downloads and licensing before commercial deployment.

- Wrong field: the text is in IPTC or XMP while the slideshow reads JPEG Comment, or vice versa.
- Catalog-only text: the organizer has not written its database value back to the image or sidecar.
- Sidecar not read: the viewer does not load the XMP file beside the photo.
- Unsaved metadata: edits were made but not saved or synchronized.
- Format loss: conversion or export removed the field.
- Limited overlay support: the slideshow exposes only selected metadata categories.
- Open a metadata panel and record the exact field containing the text.
- Write a short test caption to a commonly supported IPTC Caption/Description field.
- Save or synchronize it, close and reopen the file, and test again.
- If necessary, export a copy with metadata embedded rather than relying on a database or sidecar.
- Repeat with JPEG, TIFF, PNG, or RAW derivatives because field preservation differs by format.
Overlay, burned-in text, and sharing
An overlay is drawn by the viewer and leaves the original untouched. Burned-in text is permanently added to an image copy. A presentation, PDF, video, or executable slideshow may package captions differently and may still reference the original files. If recipients do not have the same viewer, export a presentation or video, or create captioned copies.

Review metadata before public sharing: EXIF can contain GPS coordinates, capture dates, camera serial information, and other identifying details. Keep an original archive and make a reviewed or metadata-stripped sharing copy.
