A stylus may not work because it is incompatible with your phone, because the phone supports only basic conductive touch rather than active-pen features, or because a case, screen protector, worn tip, setting, software issue, or touchscreen fault is interfering. Start with the exact phone and stylus models, then compare pen input with finger input and test without accessories.
First, identify what kind of stylus your phone supports
Check the exact model of both the phone and the stylus. A basic capacitive stylus uses a conductive tip to imitate a finger on a compatible touchscreen. It can provide ordinary taps and strokes, but does not thereby gain active-pen features such as hover, pressure sensitivity, pairing, or remote controls.
Active pens are device-specific. Samsung notes that S Pen models differ and may not function on unsupported devices; check the compatibility guidance for your particular Galaxy phone and pen before troubleshooting further: Samsung S Pen compatibility and troubleshooting.

Work through these checks in order
-
Test the screen with your finger
Tap the same spots where the stylus fails. If finger input also misses or behaves inconsistently, the issue may be the touchscreen, an accessory, moisture, a setting, or a temporary system problem—not just the pen. Samsung’s touchscreen guidance lists these as possible factors: Samsung touchscreen troubleshooting.
-
Remove the case and screen protector temporarily
Take off the case and protector, then repeat the same taps and strokes. Samsung identifies magnetic case closures or clasps as possible sources of S Pen interference. A protector’s thickness, surface, condition, dirt, or debris can also affect recognition. If input improves without an accessory, replace it only with one that fits the exact phone and intended stylus use: Samsung S Pen troubleshooting.

Inspect the tip if the pointer appears but touches fail
On a compatible active-pen device, a visible pointer combined with missed touches—or a need to press unusually hard—can indicate a worn tip. Inspect it and replace it only if the tip is damaged and a replacement is available for that pen. Do not press harder to compensate; that can make screen damage more likely. Samsung describes tip wear as one possible cause of this pattern: Samsung S Pen troubleshooting.

Check whether the fault follows a particular screen area
Try several parts of the display using the same pen and similar strokes. If input repeatedly fails in one area while other areas respond, note the location and whether finger input fails there too. A repeatable dead or unreliable area points toward a screen issue that may need support or service rather than a new stylus.

Bopomofo Stylus(5 Pcs),2-in-1 Stylus Pen for Touchscreen,Capacitive Stylus- 【Stylus for Touch Screen】This stylus can be used on touch screen, designed to replace your fingers, the stylus can free up your fingers and provide higher sensitivity and response on the screen.

Update software and separate writing from special features
For a Galaxy S Pen, Samsung recommends checking for software updates as part of troubleshooting. A pen that still writes but has lost Bluetooth, pairing, or remote-control functions may have a feature-specific connection problem rather than a failed writing tip. Use instructions for the exact phone and S Pen because supported features and menus differ by model and software: Samsung S Pen troubleshooting.
-
Cross-test compatible devices before replacing anything
If possible, try the stylus on another device known to support that exact pen, then try another compatible pen on the original phone. If the stylus fails on a second compatible device, the pen may need replacement. If another compatible pen also fails on the original phone, the phone may need service. Samsung recommends this comparison to help distinguish a pen fault from a device fault: Samsung S Pen troubleshooting.

Stylus Pens for Touch Screens,Stylus Pen Universal Touch Screen Pens(2pcs)- The round head of the stylus is made of silicone, which is used for mobile phones and tablets.
- The stylus pen tip is made of hard plastic, which can only be used for resistive screens such as GPS and navigator.
- The round head and pointed head of the stylus are compatible with all the capacitive and resistive screens at present.
- SILICONE ROUND HEAD, FOR MODERN DEVICES: The soft, conductive silicone round head is designed specifically for all capacitive touch screens, including iPad, iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Android tablets/smartphones, and other similar devices. Perfect for scrolling, tapping, and general navigation.
- PLASTIC TIP, FOR SPECIFIC RESISTIVE SCREENS ONLY (PLEASE NOTE): The fine plastic tip is ONLY compatible with older resistive touch screens, such as those found on some GPS devices, Nintendo DS/3DS, and certain POS machines. It will NOT work on capacitive screens like iPhones, iPads, or modern smartphones/tablets.
Choose the next step based on what the tests show
- Finger input works; the active pen does not: Confirm exact model compatibility, inspect the tip, and cross-test with another compatible device or pen.
- Input improves after removing the case or protector: The accessory is likely interfering. Replace it with one verified for the phone and stylus use.
- Finger and stylus both fail in the same area: Record the pattern and seek device support or service.
- The pen writes but remote or Bluetooth features do not: Troubleshoot that feature for the specific phone and pen rather than assuming basic touch input has failed.
- A generic conductive stylus is involved: Treat it as a basic touch accessory, not as an active pen. It cannot add features the phone does not support.
A factory reset is not a sensible first step for a stylus problem. Back up important data and consider one only if the device manufacturer specifically recommends it after simpler checks.
