Phone SSH runs commands on a remote computer; a mobile Linux terminal such as Termux runs commands in an environment on your Android phone. They are not mutually exclusive: Termux can also run an SSH client, letting you work locally and connect to remote hosts from the same app.
What is the difference between phone SSH and a mobile Linux terminal?
An SSH app provides a connection and terminal interface to a shell on another machine. Your phone sends commands over a network; the remote host supplies the operating system, files, installed software and computing resources. The app itself does not turn the phone into that server.
A mobile Linux terminal provides a local command-line environment on the phone. Termux describes itself as an Android terminal emulator and Linux environment: it installs a minimal base system, with additional packages available through its package manager. It is an app environment, not a replacement operating system or a complete desktop Linux installation.
The distinction is where commands run. In an SSH session, commands run on the connected host. In Termux, local commands run in Termux’s Android environment. Termux can also install and run the OpenSSH client, so it can connect to remote machines as well. Termux’s official site and Mobile SSH’s documentation describe these respective capabilities.

What can you do with an SSH app on a phone?
- Connect to a remote host: Enter its hostname or IP address, port and username, then authenticate with a password or private key. The phone must have network access to the host.
- Work in a remote shell: Run commands in an interactive terminal. Which commands, files and tools are available depends on the remote machine and your account’s permissions.
- Use phone-oriented terminal controls: Mobile SSH documents extra terminal keys, session panes, scroll handling and external-keyboard input for Android and iOS.
Mobile SSH’s getting-started and terminal documentation covers the connection workflow and input controls. An SSH app is useful when the job belongs on a server or another computer; it does not, by itself, provide Termux’s local package environment.
What can you do with Termux?
- Run a local shell and command-line programs: Termux says it works without rooting or a separate setup process and installs a minimal base system.
- Install additional tools: Its package manager uses APT, and the project lists shells, text editors, programming languages, compilers and debugging tools among the available capabilities. Packages must be compatible with Termux’s environment.
- Connect to other machines: Install and run the OpenSSH client to use SSH from Termux, alongside local commands.
These capabilities are documented on the Termux project site. They do not mean every desktop Linux program or privileged system operation will work on Android.

What do you need before connecting by SSH?
- A remote host running an SSH service and reachable from the phone’s network.
- The host name or IP address, port and username.
- Valid authentication details, such as a password or private key.
If the host cannot be reached or the credentials are not accepted, the SSH app cannot open the remote shell. For local shell work in Termux, a remote server is not required.
Does a mobile Linux terminal work on iPhone?
The cited Termux project documentation describes an Android environment and does not document an iOS version. For remote administration on iPhone or iPad, use an iOS SSH client; Mobile SSH documents support for both Android and iOS. These sources establish the platform scope of those named options, not the availability of every terminal app on either platform.

Is an external keyboard necessary?
No. A keyboard is optional for both local terminal work and SSH. For extended command entry, an external or Bluetooth keyboard can make typing easier. Termux also describes keyboard shortcuts and mouse support in an external-display setup; Mobile SSH documents external and Bluetooth keyboard input on Android and iOS.
