The right phone repair tools depend on the exact model and the repair: a precision screwdriver kit is a useful starting point, but screen, battery, and port work may also call for opening picks, a suction tool, or model-specific equipment. Check the repair manual before buying tools or opening the phone; some repairs also require experience or post-repair software steps.
What tools do you need to repair a phone?
For many phone repairs, the main tool categories are precision drivers, opening picks, and a suction tool. They are not a universal kit: screw types, opening methods, adhesive, and required steps differ by phone and repair. iFixit’s phone tools catalog includes precision drivers, suction tools, a cleaning kit, and a magnetic mat; its 64-bit Mako driver kit resource describes a range of bit types.
- Precision screwdriver kit: A practical starting point for small device screws. Bit families can include Phillips, Torx, and flathead, among others. Use only the bit type and size specified for your phone; having many bits does not mean every bit fits your device.
- Opening picks: Thin picks can help separate bonded assemblies when the model’s procedure calls for them. An iPhone 12 mini screen guide, for example, lists picks among its required tools.
- Suction tool: Some screen-removal methods use suction to lift or create an opening. Whether it is suitable depends on the screen condition and the guide’s opening method.
- Magnetic work mat: An optional aid for keeping screws and small parts organized. It is not a requirement for every repair.
- Heat source: Some adhesive-sealed repairs require heat, but the guide should specify whether and how to use it. Excessive heat can damage a screen or battery, so a generic heat gun should not be treated as a beginner-safe, all-purpose solution.
What tools do I need to repair a phone screen?
Screen replacement often involves opening the device, dealing with adhesive, and handling a fragile display assembly. The exact tool list depends on the phone and whether the procedure removes the display from the front or accesses the device another way. A model-specific guide may call for a driver, picks, and suction equipment; do not assume a screen kit for one model suits another.

Do I need special tools to replace an iPhone battery?
Possibly. An iPhone battery repair can require model-specific drivers and tools for opening the device and handling adhesive. Apple’s iPhone 15 Repair Manual, published June 4, 2025, covers battery and broken-glass safety, troubleshooting, and procedures for the battery, display, back glass, and USB-C connector. Its instructions—not a generic toolkit list—are the basis for deciding what is needed for that model.
Apple says its Self Service Repair program is intended for people with the knowledge and experience to repair electronic devices. It provides genuine parts, tools, and manuals for eligible out-of-warranty repairs, subject to model and location availability. How to choose a phone repair toolkit
- Identify the exact phone. Confirm the model, not just the product family or screen size. Variants can require different screws, parts, or procedures.
- Choose the repair. Screen, battery, and port work can involve different access points and handling steps. Find the manual or trusted guide for that exact repair.
- Match the tools to the opening method. Check which driver bits, picks, suction tool, adhesive steps, and any heat instructions the guide specifies.
- Assess the safety and skill requirements. Read warnings before starting, especially around batteries, broken glass, and heat. If the procedure exceeds your experience, use a qualified repair provider.
- Check for software steps after reassembly. Some repairs require a software process such as Repair Assistant or System Configuration. Follow the model’s instructions rather than assuming new parts will work fully without configuration.
Will a toolkit guarantee a successful repair?
No. A screwdriver kit is a plausible starter purchase, not proof that you have every tool a particular repair requires. Buying tools alone also does not guarantee that a replacement part will be recognized or that every feature will behave as expected. Apple notes that genuine-part status and behavior can depend on the model, operating system, and repair history; some repairs call for post-repair software steps.
