Microsoft Phone Link is the Windows app behind the reaction in this headline: it brings selected phone features—such as messages, notifications, calls and recent photos—onto a Windows PC. That can make Windows more appealing to someone who otherwise prefers Linux, but the title describes one person’s perspective, not a universal verdict or a documented comparison with Linux. Phone Link is a Windows PC app; Microsoft does not document a native Linux version. Microsoft’s requirements and setup guide explains the supported connections and features.
What Phone Link does on a Windows PC
Phone Link connects a compatible Android phone or iPhone to a Windows computer, letting you use selected phone functions from the PC. Depending on the phone and feature, those include reading and replying to texts, seeing recent photos and notifications, making or receiving calls, and accessing some mobile apps. Availability differs between Android and iPhone, and among devices; these are not identical feature sets.
For a Linux user, the practical appeal is integration with a Windows PC workflow, not a way to run a phone-link client on Linux. If your computer runs Linux, Phone Link itself is not documented as a native option for that system.

Android requirements and pairing
Microsoft lists Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11, and Android 10 or later. The phone and PC need to be on the same Wi-Fi network. Pairing uses Phone Link on the PC and Link to Windows on the Android phone, with the same Microsoft account, a pairing step, and requested permissions. Microsoft offers QR-code pairing and a manual-code option. Multiple Android profiles and work or school accounts are not currently supported by Phone Link.

iPhone requirements and pairing
For iPhone, Microsoft lists Windows 10 with the May 2019 update or later, or Windows 11; Bluetooth Low Energy support on the PC; and iOS 16 or later. Pairing and calls rely on Bluetooth. Microsoft lists messages, calls, and notifications among the available iPhone functions; do not assume Android features such as phone screen or file drag-and-drop also work on iPhone.
Message access has a privacy trade-off: Microsoft warns that message permissions can expose sensitive content, including two-factor authentication SMS. Review the requested permissions and decide whether the convenience is worth that access.

Which Android features are limited to selected devices?
Phone screen
Phone screen mirrors and lets you control a phone from the PC, using a mouse, trackpad, keyboard, or touchscreen. Microsoft limits it to Android 10 or later phones in select markets where Link to Windows is preinstalled, and to selected device families, including some Samsung Galaxy, HONOR, OnePlus, OPPO, Realme, and ASUS ROG models. Not every app or game responds to mouse or keyboard input. Check Microsoft’s phone-screen compatibility guidance for eligibility rather than treating this as a feature of all Android phones.

Cross-device copy and paste is available only on Surface Duo and selected Android devices. It can transfer text and images; images larger than 1 MB are resized. Dragging files between devices is also restricted to selected phone families, and touch- or pen-based drag-and-drop is not currently supported. Microsoft’s content-transfer guidance describes compatibility and limitations.

Set up Phone Link
For Android
- On the Windows PC, open Phone Link. On the Android phone, open or install Link to Windows.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account on both devices, then follow Phone Link’s pairing flow. Use the QR code or choose the manual-code option if offered.
- Keep the phone and PC on the same Wi-Fi network, and approve only the permissions you want Phone Link to use.
For iPhone
- On the PC, open Phone Link and choose the iPhone connection option.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to pair over Bluetooth. The PC must support Bluetooth Low Energy, and the iPhone must meet Microsoft’s iOS requirement.
- Complete the requested Bluetooth pairing and permissions steps for the features you want, such as calls, messages, or notifications.
For the current setup screens and requirements, use Microsoft’s Phone Link requirements and setup page; interface details and compatibility may change.
What to try when a feature does not work
- Confirm eligibility first: check the phone platform, OS version, device model, and the specific feature’s requirements. A successful basic connection does not mean every feature is supported.
- For Android pairing: verify that the PC and phone use the same Microsoft account and that both are on the same Wi-Fi network. Check the permissions needed for the feature.
- For iPhone calls or pairing: confirm Bluetooth is enabled and the PC supports Bluetooth Low Energy.
- For copy and paste: make sure the feature is enabled and the devices remain connected. Microsoft recommends closing and reopening both Phone Link and Link to Windows if it still fails.
- For other problems: check for app updates and follow the relevant feature-specific steps in Microsoft’s Phone Link troubleshooting guide. No single fix covers every failure.
Why the app can change how Windows feels
Phone Link is most compelling when your phone is already part of what you do at a PC: checking notifications, answering calls, or replying to a message without repeatedly picking up the phone. That convenience can be enough to make Windows feel more useful to someone who generally prefers Linux. Whether it does so for you depends on your phone, the features you need, and how much access you are comfortable granting.
