Yes. Using your phone as a hotspot consumes battery and can drain it faster, especially during active data use or when the cellular signal is weak. There is no reliable percentage-per-hour figure that applies across phones and workloads: the drain depends on the device, signal, network activity and tethering method. Turn the hotspot off when you finish, enable automatic shutoff if available, and plug in for long sessions.
Why does a phone hotspot use battery?
A hotspot keeps the phone’s network connections working: the phone communicates with the cellular network and shares that connection with nearby devices. Cellular activity generally requires significantly more energy than Wi-Fi activity, according to Apple’s archived iOS energy guide. That is a general networking observation, not a measurement of hotspot drain on every phone.
How much power it uses changes with what the tethered device is doing. Active data transfers keep networking hardware busy, and radios may remain active after network activity. The number of connected devices alone does not determine a fixed battery cost; their traffic and the phone’s implementation matter.
What makes hotspot battery drain worse?
Weak or fluctuating cellular signal
A phone may use more energy when the signal is poor or unstable. Apple’s guide describes how weak or fluctuating signal can slow or disrupt transactions and lead to retries; low throughput can also keep radios on longer. A 2013 study examined signal-strength impacts on smartphone energy using 3,785 smartphones analyzed for at least one month, but it was not a hotspot battery benchmark: ACM SIGMETRICS Performance Evaluation Review.

Active network traffic
Streaming, downloading, video calls and other sustained transfers keep the connection active. A hotspot that is switched on but carrying little traffic is not the same workload as one continuously sending data, so a single hourly drain estimate would be misleading.
Phone and network implementation
Phones differ in their hardware and software. Android documents tethering hardware offload, which can route traffic through hardware rather than the application processor, as a way to save power; support depends on the device implementation. Which tethering method should you use?

- Turn the hotspot off when you are done. Google Fi’s support guidance warns that hotspots can use a lot of device battery and advises turning the connection off when it is not in use: Tether or create a Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Enable automatic shutoff if your phone offers it. On supported Pixel phones, the hotspot can turn off when no devices are connected. Check the tethering or hotspot settings on your model; available controls vary. Google Pixel Help: Share a mobile connection by tethering or hotspot.
- Plug in for a long session when power is available. Pixel Help recommends plugging in while tethering. Charging supplies power during use; it does not reduce the phone’s underlying power consumption.
- Choose a method that fits the job. Bluetooth may suit a single device when lower power matters more than speed; Wi-Fi is more suitable for multiple devices or faster throughput. Do not assume USB is more battery-efficient on every phone.
- Limit unnecessary data activity. Pausing large transfers or other sustained network use reduces avoidable hotspot activity. The battery effect varies, so this is not a guaranteed percentage saving.
Is there a typical hotspot battery-drain rate?
No general rate is established by the available guidance. The sources explain why network conditions and activity affect energy use, but they do not provide a current, controlled comparison across phone models, network generations, signal levels, connected-device counts and workloads. Avoid treating anecdotes or results from unrelated tests as a universal percentage per hour.

Older or specialized research figures also should not be read as modern phone estimates. Microsoft Research’s DozyAP paper reports that its Wi-Fi interface could sleep for up to 88% of the time in several applications and that the studied system achieved up to 33% lower system power consumption under restrictions of its Wi-Fi hardware. Those are results for that implementation and test setup, not expected battery savings for a current phone hotspot: Microsoft Research: DozyAP: Power-Efficient Wi-Fi Tethering.
The available sources also do not establish a general hotspot-related overheating threshold or long-term battery-aging effect. If heat or battery health is a concern, do not infer a specific threshold or lifespan from these network-energy findings.
