First confirm your phone supports the camera and that your app can select it; then adjust only the options your specific phone exposes. For USB cameras, compatibility, camera selection, permissions, orientation, and power often matter more than familiar controls such as focus or white balance.
First identify the kind of external camera
The instructions here focus on a separate USB camera or webcam, typically one using USB Video Class (UVC). A clip-on lens that sits over the phone’s built-in camera is different: it does not connect as a USB camera, so these setup steps may not apply. Wireless cameras, HDMI capture-card feeds, and another phone used as a camera can also follow different connection paths.
Before changing settings, check the exact phone model and operating-system support, whether the phone can act as a USB host (sometimes described as USB OTG), whether the camera meets any required UVC standard, and whether your intended app can use an external camera. A USB-C adapter or cable cannot add support that the phone or app lacks.
Connect and select the camera
On a supported Pixel
Google’s instructions require a UVC-compatible camera and apply only to eligible Pixel models. Eligibility varies by model and can change; check Google’s current Connect external cameras to your Pixel device page for your phone. Google lists Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok as supported apps on that page; check it for the current list.

- Open Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Connected Cameras and enable the feature.
- Open a supported app, then connect the USB camera.
- Choose the external camera in the app’s camera list and allow USB access when prompted. Use the picker to switch between the phone camera and the connected camera.
Google’s Pixel flow allows one external camera at a time, and the active camera supplies audio.
On a Sony PDT-FP1
Sony provides device-specific controls for assigning the connected camera’s direction and rotation. Connect the camera only after setting these options as described below.

On other Android phones or in a USB-camera app
Android’s platform documentation describes plug-and-play USB camera support through Camera2, generally for UVC devices, but the phone maker determines whether and how it is implemented. A third-party app may communicate with a USB camera directly rather than use the phone’s built-in camera interface. Its own camera selection and USB access prompt may therefore be required.
The USB Camera app listing describes USB-OTG preview and recording for supported devices. Its developer says the app’s userspace driver works within that app and does not make the camera available to other apps. The listing also says Android 9 and later require Camera permission for full USB video-device access in that app. A camera appearing in one app is not proof that every other app can use it.

Set direction and rotation only when your phone offers them
On the Sony PDT-FP1, open Settings > Device connection > Connection preferences > Assign an external camera. Disconnect the camera before changing the settings, then reconnect it. Sony documents these choices:
- Direction: “Do not specify” for a generic external-camera role; “Front-facing” when the external lens faces the same way as the screen; or “Rear-facing” when it faces the opposite way.
- Rotation: 0°, 90°, 180°, or 270°. Choose the angle that makes the image upright in the app.
If the app does not recognize the camera after reconnecting, close and restart the app. Aspect ratio and related display behavior can vary by app. These are PDT-FP1 controls, not a universal Android camera menu; if your phone has no comparable setting, do not assume there is a hidden system-wide rotation control.

Check image, video, audio, and power in the app
Once the external camera is selected, inspect the controls that the specific phone-and-app combination actually provides. Resolution, frame rate, audio input, focus, exposure, white balance, and lens controls are not guaranteed to appear just because the camera is connected. On Pixel Connected Cameras, the active camera supplies audio; elsewhere, verify the selected input in the app if audio matters.
Android’s general USB-camera support is intended for lightweight uses such as video chat and photo kiosks. The Android Open Source Project says it is not designed for performance-intensive, high-resolution or high-speed streaming, augmented reality, or manual ISP, sensor, or lens control. The phone maker’s implementation and the app’s options determine what is available, so do not treat Android’s developer-facing camera documentation as a list of settings an owner can change.

If the camera does not connect reliably, check the cable and power needs as well as compatibility. Depending on the phone and camera, a USB-C OTG adapter or cable, adequate power, or a hub may be needed. The USB Camera app developer recommends a good-quality OTG cable and notes that some devices may require a hub; those are conditional suggestions, not requirements for every setup. Confirm connector type, USB-host support, UVC compatibility, power draw, and app support before buying accessories.

If the external camera is not available
- It never appears: Recheck the exact phone model’s external-camera support, the camera’s connection requirements, and whether the app supports external cameras.
- The app requests access: Grant the USB or Camera permission needed by that app. Permission in one app does not grant access to another.
- The picture is rotated or mirrored: Look for direction or rotation controls documented for your phone, then reconnect if the maker requires it. Do not expect the Sony PDT-FP1 menu on other devices.
- The image, frame rate, or audio is wrong: Check the app’s available choices and active camera/input. Not every phone exposes every control for an external camera.
- The connection drops or fails under load: Check cable, host/OTG support, and power requirements; a hub may be needed in some combinations. A more capable cable cannot overcome missing phone or app support.
