PhantomJS and Chrome can produce different screenshots even when they open the same URL because they render pages with different browser engines: PhantomJS uses an older WebKit engine, while Headless Chrome uses Blink. First make the comparison fair by matching the layout viewport, capture region, capture mode, and page readiness. If the goal is to test how Chrome renders, use the same Chrome or Chromium version and capture setup for both images.
Why PhantomJS and Chrome screenshots differ
Chrome for Developers identifies the central difference: “The main difference between the two is that Phantom uses an older version of WebKit as its rendering engine while Headless Chrome uses the latest version of Blink.” Chrome for Developers’ Headless Chrome shell documentation also distinguishes newer Headless Chrome, which runs the real Chrome browser, from the older standalone headless shell.
Different engines can render layout, typography, CSS, SVG, and other page content differently. Matching the settings can eliminate avoidable discrepancies, but no viewport adjustment or longer timeout makes WebKit and Blink equivalent.
Check the comparison in this order
1. Match the layout viewport
PhantomJS’s viewportSize sets the viewport used for page layout. Establish it before loading the page, and use the same CSS viewport width and height in both captures. A different width can change responsive breakpoints and line wrapping; height can affect what is visible and may influence page behavior. When possible, inspect the effective viewport from inside each page rather than relying only on configured values. See the PhantomJS viewportSize documentation.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Match the capture bounds and mode
Viewport size and screenshot crop are separate settings. PhantomJS’s clipRect selects the portion of the page to capture; Chrome’s command-line screenshot example uses --window-size, and full-page capture requires additional steps. Compare viewport-only with viewport-only or full-page with full-page, and check the resulting image dimensions before running a pixel diff. The distinction is illustrated in the PhantomJS screen-capture guide and Chrome Headless documentation.
3. Wait for the same visual state
A navigation or page-open callback does not guarantee that application-specific rendering is finished. PhantomJS’s documentation includes an example that waits 200 ms, while Chrome’s Puppeteer example uses networkidle2; these are examples, not universal readiness guarantees. Pages may still be waiting on fonts, data, images, or client-side rendering after navigation settles. Use a page-specific readiness condition, such as the appearance of a selector that indicates the content is ready. Where the test allows it, stabilize animations and time-sensitive content as well.

4. Account for renderer differences
If viewport, crop, mode, and page state match but the images still differ, the WebKit-versus-Blink distinction is a likely explanation. Choose the comparison target first: for current Chrome fidelity, capture both the baseline and test with the same Chrome or Chromium build and automation path; for historical PhantomJS fidelity, retain PhantomJS as the baseline rather than expecting Chrome to reproduce it.
A reproducible screenshot comparison checklist
- Record the PhantomJS and Chrome versions, operating system or container image, URL, and capture script or command.
- Set the same layout viewport before the page loads, then verify the effective values where possible.
- Use equivalent capture bounds and compare the same mode: viewport with viewport, or full-page with full-page.
- Confirm the output image dimensions match before interpreting a pixel diff.
- Wait for a page-specific readiness signal and control animations or time-dependent content when the test permits.
- If Chrome is the intended target, generate both images using the same pinned Chrome or Chromium version and environment.
Choose the engine that matches the test’s goal
| Goal | Practical choice |
|---|---|
| Reproduce a historical PhantomJS baseline | Keep PhantomJS for the baseline; Chrome is not expected to match its older WebKit rendering. |
| Test current Chrome rendering | Use the same Chrome or Chromium build and capture path for baseline and comparison. |
| Investigate whether a mismatch is caused by configuration | Align viewport, crop, capture mode, and readiness first, then compare image dimensions and output. |
For stable comparisons, record the browser version, operating environment, viewport, capture mode, and readiness condition alongside each baseline. Otherwise, a browser or environment change can look like a change in the page.

Troubleshooting common mismatches
Text wraps differently or elements shift
Check the effective viewport width and responsive layout first. If those match, the remaining difference may come from the engines’ rendering behavior; use the target engine for both captures if the purpose is a browser-specific visual test.
The images have different dimensions
Check viewport dimensions, screenshot crop, and whether one capture is full-page and the other is viewport-only. Match the capture mode and bounds before comparing pixels.

One screenshot is missing content or shows an intermediate state
Do not assume that navigation completion means the application is visually ready. Wait for the relevant content, fonts, or images using a condition appropriate to the page, rather than relying on a universal fixed delay.
Settings appear aligned but the screenshots still differ
Confirm that both captures use the same target renderer and pinned version. If one uses PhantomJS and one uses Chrome, engine behavior remains a fundamental difference even after the capture geometry and page state are aligned. The sources establish the engine distinction, but without your scripts, versions, environment, dimensions, and paired outputs, they cannot identify the cause of a particular mismatch.
