When a PhantomJS screenshot script appears to hang, first identify which stage stopped: the executable may be unexpected, page JavaScript may have failed, a resource may be stalled, or the script may be waiting indefinitely for a capture condition or process exit. Check the binary and version, add error and request logging, then bound individual resource requests and inspect the script lifecycle. These steps are for maintaining a legacy PhantomJS environment; they do not establish compatibility with any particular current website.
1. Confirm which PhantomJS executable is running
Run phantomjs --version in the same environment that launches the screenshot script. PhantomJS documentation identifies 2.1.1 as the latest documented release and notes that multiple installed versions can lead to a different executable being used than expected. If the version is surprising, inspect PATH, shell aliases, service configuration, and package scripts to determine which binary is actually invoked.
For additional diagnostic output, try the documented --debug=true option. The option name and available output come from the legacy CLI documentation, so verify behavior against the installed binary.
2. Separate page errors from network stalls
Log page JavaScript exceptions
Set page.onError to print the message and each available stack-trace location. This helps distinguish a page exception from an open request that never completes.

};If your script currently discards browser console output, add console logging too; page-side messages can reveal why a page-specific readiness condition is never satisfied.
Log resource requests
Record requested URLs with page.onResourceRequested. The last request logged before the apparent stall is a useful lead, but does not by itself prove that request caused the hang. Compare the recorded sequence with whether the page.open callback runs.

};3. Check HTTPS, TLS, and proxy behavior
If the same target works over HTTP but hangs or fails over HTTPS, investigate the SSL libraries available to the PhantomJS binary and how that legacy build was packaged. The official troubleshooting guide identifies SSL-library issues as a possible cause; it does not establish a universal fix for every operating system or build.
On Windows, the PhantomJS documentation warns that a default proxy can add substantial latency. If a proxy is not required in your environment, compare behavior with --proxy-type=none. Do not disable a required organizational proxy as a permanent fix; use this only as a controlled diagnostic.

4. Put a limit on individual resource requests
Set page.settings.resourceTimeout in milliseconds before the first call to page.open, and attach page.onResourceTimeout to identify which resource exceeded the limit. Changing this setting after the initial open does not affect that call.

});The 15,000-millisecond value above is an example, not a recommended universal threshold. Choose a limit appropriate to your page and environment. This setting limits an individual resource request; it does not guarantee that a script-level polling loop, callback, or page-side wait will end.

5. Verify capture and process-exit logic
Trace the lifecycle from page.open through the capture call to process exit. PhantomJS’s basic screen-capture example calls page.render() in the page.open callback and then calls phantom.exit(). If the callback never runs, investigate loading and resource behavior; if it does run, inspect the code that waits before rendering and the code that follows rendering.

});For a page that updates asynchronously, do not assume that the open callback means every dynamic element is ready. Wait for a condition meaningful to that target page, and impose a separate overall watchdog for the script. There is no single readiness signal prescribed by the PhantomJS documentation for all websites.

6. Distinguish a hang from an X-server error
Check the PhantomJS version before changing display configuration. According to the FAQ, PhantomJS 1.4 and earlier require an X server; version 1.5 and later are pure headless and do not need X11 or Xvfb. If the actual symptom is an X-server error, that version boundary is more relevant than treating it as a slow page load.
The official troubleshooting page also flags SELinux as a possible issue. Its linked workaround does not establish a generally validated policy for every system, so investigate local security logs and consult the policy owner rather than applying a broad security change.
7. Use the remote inspector carefully
If the installed build supports it, start PhantomJS with --remote-debugger-port=9000 and use the documented WebKit inspector workflow to examine the script and page. Treat the debugger endpoint as a diagnostic interface: restrict access to the appropriate local environment and do not expose it publicly.
