What does page.open actually return?
PhantomJS’s page.open API reference describes an optional callback that runs when loading completes and receives the page status as the string 'success' or 'fail'. The standard Quick Start checks whether that status is 'success' before rendering.
So a literal false is not the documented callback status. It may come from a different expression, a wrapper around PhantomJS, or a value your script prints after handling the callback. Log the callback argument directly before changing the capture code.
Log the status and page errors
This minimal diagnostic follows the documented open-then-render flow and adds the documented page.onError handler to print page JavaScript exceptions and their stack locations:

A 'fail' status indicates that the normal render branch was not reached; a JavaScript exception printed by onError is a separate signal and does not, by itself, establish why navigation or transport failed. PhantomJS’s troubleshooting guide documents the error handler.
Trace a failed page load
Verify which PhantomJS executable is running
Check the executable path and version used by the script or shell. The legacy troubleshooting guide warns that multiple installations can result in a different PhantomJS version being invoked than expected. This matters because the project is archived and its documentation is version-specific; the GitHub repository issue page is archived/read-only.

Inspect network and HTTPS conditions
When loading fails, inspect the page’s network requests rather than assuming the screenshot renderer is the cause. For HTTPS-only failures, the PhantomJS troubleshooting guide recommends verifying that SSL libraries, usually OpenSSL, are installed properly.
On Windows, check whether the default proxy is adding latency. The guide documents --proxy-type=none as a workaround to try when that proxy is the issue; use it only when bypassing the proxy is appropriate for your environment.

Use JavaScript errors as a separate clue
The page.onError handler in the diagnostic snippet reports exceptions raised by page JavaScript and their stack trace. Treat that output as evidence about script execution, not proof of a network or TLS failure. Compare it with the callback status and your network observations.
Check the screenshot configuration after a successful load
Output format follows the filename
page.render saves the rendered page using the requested filename, and its extension determines the output format. The render API reference lists PDF, PNG, JPEG, BMP, PPM, and GIF where supported by the build; GIF availability depends on the Qt build. Use an extension for a format your PhantomJS build supports.

Viewport and clipping change the captured area
The Screen Capture guide documents viewportSize for setting the page viewport and clipRect for limiting the captured region. If the file exists but looks blank, cropped, or incomplete, inspect those values along with the page layout.
Dynamic content may need an application-specific readiness check
A successful load callback is not a universal guarantee that every asynchronous operation on a site has finished. If content is inserted after the initial load, use a readiness condition appropriate to that page before rendering. The reviewed PhantomJS guidance does not promise a universal wait duration that will work for every site.
