The first usually means Node.js cannot resolve a package or file; the second means a process cannot locate the PhantomJS executable through its PATH. Check the exact missing name and the stack trace before reinstalling anything: they identify whether the failure is in your application, npm’s installer, a nested dependency, or executable lookup.
First identify which lookup failed
Read the complete error, including the first stack frames that name the file making the failing request. A message such as Cannot find module 'some-library' is a Node module-resolution error. A message such as PhantomJS not found on PATH concerns locating an executable. They are not interchangeable, and fixing one does not necessarily fix the other.

Node resolves a requested module from the requiring module’s location, searching nearby node_modules directories and then parent directories. A package installed globally or in a different project may therefore be unavailable to application code. See the Node.js CommonJS module-resolution documentation and npm’s guide to using packages in a project.
Fix an application error for a missing package
- Run the command in the project that owns the application. Change to the project directory containing its
package.json, then run the application from that context. - Check the exact missing identifier. Match the spelling and capitalization in the error against the package name or relative file path in the failing
require()call. - Install the package in that project if it is a direct dependency. For example, if the error names
phantomjs-prebuiltand the application actually requires it, runnpm install phantomjs-prebuiltin the project directory. npm documents this project-level approach; a global installation in an unrelated location is not a substitute. - Retry and inspect the new stack trace. If the error changes to a different missing name, diagnose that name separately. A missing nested dependency does not prove that the original package is absent.
If the missing name is a file path rather than a package, check that the file exists and that the relative path is correct from the file making the request. The stack trace and requiring location matter because resolution is relative to that code, not simply to the terminal’s current directory.

When npm installation fails before the application runs
An error during npm install is an installation-path problem until shown otherwise. Identify the first relevant stack frame and the exact missing identifier. If the installer cannot load install.js, that is distinct from the application failing later to import phantomjs-prebuilt.
Historical issue reports illustrate why the distinction matters. A 2015 Windows report described npm failing to load the package’s install script; its maintainers suggested an npm bug or environment misconfiguration, without establishing a universal cause (issue #302). Another report showed Cannot find module 'throttleit' arising inside a nested request-progress dependency during installation (issue #599). These are examples tied to older environments, not verified fixes for current machines.

- Record the operating system, Node version, npm version, project directory, and exact command.
- Keep the full error and stack trace; the first missing name and the package paths are more useful than the final summary line alone.
- Determine whether the error came from npm, a package install script, or your application before changing dependencies.
When the log says PhantomJS is not on PATH
Do not stop at that warning. A historical installation log printed “PhantomJS not found on PATH,” then extracted a binary and recorded its location inside the project’s node_modules/phantomjs-prebuilt tree. In that case the message did not by itself mean package-local setup failed (historical install log).
- Read the subsequent install output to see whether a binary was extracted and where it was placed.
- Check that the recorded executable path exists in the environment where the application runs.
- Check the PATH of the process that launches PhantomJS, not only the interactive shell where you installed dependencies. Services, IDEs, build agents, and shells can inherit different environments.
- If the package has a project-local binary, configure the calling code or script to use that actual path when appropriate; do not assume a global PATH entry is required just because the log printed a warning.
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Installing globally to fix a project import: Node resolves from the requiring code through nearby and parent
node_modulesdirectories. Install the dependency in the project environment that runs the code. - Treating every missing name as PhantomJS itself: If the error names
throttleit, another package, or a script file, investigate that exact missing item and its stack frame. - Assuming a PATH warning means installation failed: Inspect the remainder of the log and the binary path actually used.
- Applying a fix from an old issue without checking versions: The cited reports are from 2015 and 2016. They do not establish current PhantomJS compatibility, current npm behavior, or a safe workaround for a different setup.
