Choose a petite or regular blazer by comparing its measurements and the silhouette you want—not by height alone. Petite versions are often shorter, but the amount and placement of the difference vary by style and brand. Start with the retailer’s size chart, then check the specific blazer’s length and fit notes.
What is the difference between petite and regular blazers?
Petite sizing is intended for shorter proportions, while regular sizing follows the brand’s standard proportions. The exact changes are not universal: the examples below establish differences in garment length, but not a consistent cross-brand formula for shoulders, sleeves, waist, or button placement.
A 2025 sizing guide from PGA Members’, provided by Brook Taverner, lists petite as up to 5 ft 3 in (160 cm), regular as 5 ft 4 in to 5 ft 8 in (161–173 cm), and tall as 5 ft 9 in (174 cm) and above. How much shorter can a petite blazer be?
Retailer product listings show that the difference depends on the design. These are listed garment lengths, not body measurements:

The measurements are style-specific, so one blazer’s petite-to-regular gap does not predict another’s. Check the product page for the exact style and measurement method: a center-back length, for example, may not be directly comparable to a length measured another way. How to decide which fit is right for you
- Start with body measurements. Compare bust and other relevant measurements with the retailer’s size chart. The PGA Members’ guide identifies its chart as based on body measurements; product garment lengths are a separate kind of measurement.
- Check the exact blazer’s length. Use the listing’s stated measurement and method, then consider where that length will fall on the wearer and whether it suits the intended outfit.
- Assess shoulders and sleeves. Read the product’s fit notes and, if possible, try it on. The available product examples do not establish a universal petite adjustment for these areas, so do not assume a shorter body guarantees a better shoulder or sleeve fit.
- Choose the silhouette you prefer if both sizes fit. Petite may reduce unwanted length; regular can be a deliberate choice for a longer look. Height categories are useful starting guidance, not a rule that overrides fit and preference.
When should you consider alterations?
If the main issue is length, ask a qualified tailor whether that specific blazer can be altered cleanly before buying it for that purpose. The listed measurements alone do not establish whether a particular construction can be shortened successfully.
